“Pure pleasure - Total relaxation!”
Reviewed 13 January 2011

A 40 minute drive south of Zihuatenejo we found solitude, perfect beach, awesome sunsets, casual atmosphere, extremely friendly staff, great food all in a natural setting. 10 (5 kids, 5-10 years old) of us went right after Christmas and spent the New Year here. We all had a terrific time. The 5 kids, plus 2 new friends from Mexico City, could play all day in the pool, on the beach (flag football, paddle ball, building forts with drift wood, etc.), in the surf or play cards and board games. And they loved the sea turtle sanctuary and releasing baby turtle into the ocean. Fall asleep every night to sound of the ocean and warm breezes. Probably the most relaxing vacation I have ever been on.

Our stay at Playa Viva was Deeply Nourishing on many levels. From the fresh caught, grown-locally, deliciously prepared food and drink, to the warm architecture, open to the sand, sea, sun and plethora of animals.

We slept well (and yes, the first night we thought the loud waves might keep us up, but having left, we now miss it dearly). We ate well. We toured the lovely grounds. We loved the staff, who were so very friendly.

My highlight was watching a sea turtle lay her eggs. Magical.
We want to build our own day bed at home, but could never match the view of the sea. Thank you for this lovely paradise and the care that comes with a stay at Playa Viva! We felt pampered.

Within 5 minutes of our arrival at Playa Viva I was handed a signature basil margarita and the relaxing had begun. There would be no need to ride in a motorized vehicle for a week, though a snorkeling trip to Zihuatenejo was an option we chose for a day. Our every need was anticipated by the Johnny the bartender (he is so much more), Julia and the rest of the wonderful staff. We spent the entire week out of doors as active as we desired, or not. The noise of the surf (big this time of year) took some getting used to at night, but soon became soothing, especially on the most comfortable bed ever (David, I want one). The food, all local, fresh, organic, slow and sustainable was perfect. We ate fish bought directly on the beach from local spear fisherman.
I learned local, low-tech fishing techniques from Johnny, bartender non-pareil, and and by the end of the week could through a reasonable hand net in the surf. The traditional rod technique consisted of a short piece of bamboo with line wound around it, a hook and a lead weight. Casting is similar to throwing a lariat. On my last day, Cesar the spear fisherman and father-in-law of Playa Viva staff member, Jose, took me out beyond the surf to spearfish the next day, an experience I will never forget.
So many highlights: observing turtle nesting in the middle of the night, releasing hundreds of turtle hatchlings in the morning, tours of the archeologicals site, the Juluchuca coconut candy factory, school, the mangrove lagoon, watching coconuts being harvested.
Weeks later, I am still processing our wonderful week.

This is truly a magical place. The sound of rolling waves lulls you to sleep in your open-air room. You witness sea turtles laying their eggs at night, and you release newly hatched baby turtles into the ocean. The wonderful food is fresh as fresh can be; you can watch them catch your fish each morning. Kind, helpful staff includes Julia and Johnny. This marvelous creation comes via David, whose vision of eco-tourism comes forth here: solar heated water and solar generated electricity; all buildings created from locally found materials; food either grown on the premises or organic and local. Make sure you bring sunscreen and mosquito repellant (eco friendly), though!

This place satisfied every aspect of what I look for... an amazing location, beautifully built accommodations: all built with natural and local materials and completely fitting to the area and the climate. Also run on solar energy and sustainable water systems - full regard for environmental impact.

Being able to listen to the waves from the rooms was fantastic! The food was delicious - also local and healthfully made. The staff was friendly and fun. I could hang out with others and socialize or contemplate and gaze out at the sea on my own. The Turtle experiences were fabulous... the people and nearby town were awesome, the archeological highlights fascinating...and nothing compares to the colors of the sky, from sunrise to sunset and the moonlight on the waves. When can I go back???

I was amazed at every detail. Every aspect of the resort is so well thought out. I couldn't stop stairing at the beautiful detail in the thatched roof and the bathroom tiles. Everything was very sustainable and nuturing to the local environment. The staff incredible. The food was delicious and the basil margaritas sublime. Great yoga too! They best eco resort I have stayed at yet. I would go back and bring friends and family in a heart beat.
