Enjoyed wandering through the shrine and watching the tide ebb and flow (both the water and the people).

“Beautiful views of the famous torii gate”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

If you visit Miyajima, make sure you stop by here. The shrine is built over the water and the different buildings are connected by boardwalks. Some of the best views of the floating torii gate are from the shrine itself. It doesn't take much time to see the shrine; most visitors spend most of their time photographing the torii gate.

If you spend the night on the island (and I encourage you to do so!), walk down here at night. You can't enter the shrine itself, but the shrine and stone lanterns lining the shore are lit and are beautiful.

The shrine is open from 0630-1800 and costs 300 yen per person. Its approximately ten minutes (walking) from the ferry terminal.

“Loved this even on a glum day”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

We weren't blessed with the nicest weather, mind you it was middle of January, but it just made for this experience. Serene but eery, pleasant and relaxing, absolutely can't wait to go back again and not be so rushed. The deer wandering around just make you feel like you've stepped back 1000 years in history plus there aren't many vehicles/noise. Truly an experience, don't miss out!

“Floating Shrine”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

One of the most special scenery in Japan not to be missed. Unfortunately for us, we only had 2 hours on the islands and was rushing to return to Hiroshima to catch our train back to Osaka. However, we managed to walk around, and appreciate beauty of the Shinto Shrine. A bit frustrated to leave the island, but we promised to return and spend more time to appreciate the beauty of the island.

Visible from the ferry on the trip over to the Island. Tide was quite low with only a little water around the base of the shrine but still looked great. You can' miss this as. It is visible from almost everywhere.
