“Amazing Shrine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2014

It's amazing to see the shrine. If it's possible, try to visit this place twice, during high tide and low tide. When the tide is high, you can use a boat going down the torii. When it's low, you can walk till nearby the torii. Please beware of mud when it's in low tide. You can check approximate time for the tide every day from URL below.

“A must see!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 May 2014

Beautiful! A wondrous place to visit. Very relaxing walk from the ferry and if you walk through the shopping street there are delicious street food including grilled oysters, the areas famous momoji (shaped like a maple leaf) manju, and an assortment of fried fish cake. We enjoyed snacks before the shrine and pagoda visit then ate udon noodles next to the Pagoda. A fabulous visit!!! One of the must see places in Japan. Take the Shinkansen tomHiroshima then a short ride on the local train to Miyajima where a ferry will take u on a ten minute ride to Miyajima island. Directions in English at the Hiroshima train station. New used our JR rail, pass so the entire trip, was covered by the pass including the JR ferry ride.

Enjoyed wandering through the shrine and watching the tide ebb and flow (both the water and the people).

“Beautiful views of the famous torii gate”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2014

If you visit Miyajima, make sure you stop by here. The shrine is built over the water and the different buildings are connected by boardwalks. Some of the best views of the floating torii gate are from the shrine itself. It doesn't take much time to see the shrine; most visitors spend most of their time photographing the torii gate.

If you spend the night on the island (and I encourage you to do so!), walk down here at night. You can't enter the shrine itself, but the shrine and stone lanterns lining the shore are lit and are beautiful.

The shrine is open from 0630-1800 and costs 300 yen per person. Its approximately ten minutes (walking) from the ferry terminal.

“Loved this even on a glum day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 May 2014

We weren't blessed with the nicest weather, mind you it was middle of January, but it just made for this experience. Serene but eery, pleasant and relaxing, absolutely can't wait to go back again and not be so rushed. The deer wandering around just make you feel like you've stepped back 1000 years in history plus there aren't many vehicles/noise. Truly an experience, don't miss out!
