The gate is beautiful and is set off the backdrop of some nice mountaineous areas. The only issue is there were way too mamy people around which meant it was difficult to get any decent pictures of the place.

The whole area is swamped by thousands of tourists. As such businesses in the area are geared towards high turn over.

The shrine and wooden pier are good but nothing special you can see sinlmilar shrines in other places such Hakone.

Yes there are deer, great. If that's your thing go to Nara, the deer actually interact with people and bow.

This place isn't worth the of bother.

If you get to the shrine before sunset and the high tide, you can walk to the Tori gate. A number of coins are on the mud flats and also on the walls of the Tori gate. Then after wait for sunset and high tide. High tide comes in pretty fast so get ready with your camera. Its so magical, whether you view the Tori gate from the ferry, up close on the mud flats or on the pier when the high tide comes in. Be careful of the deers that roam freely in the island, they love to eat paper. Keep your plastics away so that the deers dont choke on it. The Tori gate access is free. You have to pay to enter the shrine. We met someone who told us he has been there 3 times and still continue to visit everytime he is in Hiroshima.

A beautiful shrine along with the large tori gate standing in the water. When I was there mid May'14 they were reconstructing parts of the shrine, that didn't make it less beautiful though.
Visiting this island was definitely worth it, amongst others, for this attraction.

Looking out onto the famous Torii gate, the Itsukushima Shrine can get very crowded. I was there just before it closed at 5pm and witnessed some Shinto rituals being perrformed. The entire shrine is built on stilts out into the water. As another reviewer has said, it is possible at low tide to walk out to the gate, but take care with the mud. If you visit around new year, be prepared to queue for a long time to get in.
