We arrived 5pm Friday 30 November when it was -3 degrees outside. The very pleasant manager/receptionist booked us into Room 109, which was probably only a couple of degrees warmer as there was no heating on in the room, or in any of the communal corridors approaching it. There is actually no central heating in this part of the hotel, but there was a thin electric blow heater in the room which we turned on to maximum, then went to the bar for an hour in the hope that the room would warm up. To be frank the room was unwelcoming and sparsely furnished and in definite need of updating. When we returned the temperature had hardly increased at all, and we certainly couldn't have undressed or slept in there - it was absolutely freezing!!

We went to Reception where the manager seemed to be amazed that Housekeeping hadn't left the heating on earlier during the day ... but surely this should be standard practice when the room has been sold and it's sub-zero outside? He persuaded us to stay for dinner in the hotel restaurant, so we agreed and decided we'd check out the room again afterwards before making a final decision.

We were the only people in the restaurant, although were joined later by just one more couple. It was cold and lacked atmosphere, but we made the best of our "private" dining experience. My husband ordered ribeye steak, only to be told that there wasn't any, and neither was there any sirloin, so he ended up with a burger. I had a very decent fish and chips, although the mushy peas were presented in a thimble-sized dish. During our meal the Manager came over and tried again to persuade us to stay, and apologised over and over about the room, and eventually he offered to pay for our dinner which was a nice gesture - he really did try very hard to put things right.

After dinner we went back to the room to find that the heating which we had left on had turned itself off automatically, and the room was colder than ever. We therefore checked out, and returned home. This was meant to have been a birthday treat weekend, but it was completely ruined by the lack of heating - one of the basic requirements for any hotel. You would certainly expect it to be as good as home, or probably better - but it was terrible!

i certainly wouldn't recommend this hotel, and we won't ever return. I feel sorry for the manager having to work in such a run-down and poor quality establishment that can't even get the basics right. Avoid at all costs!!

Room Tip: Make sure your room has central heating when you book - especially if it's during the Winter!!

I stayed here at the weekend with a Groupon offer and had a brilliant time. The food is really good and very well priced, the staff were very nice and made us feel at home (even on Saturday night when they were really busy with parties).

I will definitely come back again as the hotel is just a few steps away from the incredible NT Punchbowl

Myself and my friends spent Saturday night at the hotel and I can only describe it as excellent. The service was excellent, the room was beautiful and the hotel has a lovely homely feeling. We had food in the bar as the restaurant was fully booked and it was lovely. Quick service and the staff were very friendly and catered to all of our needs. I would highly recommend a stay at this hotel -whether is a romantic break (The Devil’s Punchbowl across the road is really spectacular) or a girls night (hen night there on Sat) or a family break it caters for everyone.

Attended a black tie function and have to say the place was not up to it in any way. Awful food poorly presented served slowly and cold by kids obviously hired in a rush to take the money for the night. Luckily never stayed over so cannot comment on the rooms or breakfast but the whole place is tired , toilets not working paper hanging off the walls , dirty tables and a shortage of glasses and some drinks in the bar. Very very poor

We held a small reception on a Saturday night for about 80 people. The manager James couldn't do enough - he telephoned on several occasions to 'tweek' things, and when we arrived, everything was as planned.
In addition, we had about 10 rooms booked, and everyone was very happy - certainly not as expected from I feel an under-rated 2*. Rooms were clean and everyone was delighted with the fantastic breakfasts which was all included.
We had a buffet dinner with bar and it was amazing - totally superseeded our expectations. The bar was brilliantly stocked and drinks prices were exceptionally reasonable, and even cheaper for a pint of lager than the pub down the road (which was a bonus!).
We wanted to change a couple of things at the very last minute, and there was no issue whatsoever. The staff were all brilliant, and a credit to the establishment.
Now for a smile! -- A couple of people staying in the hotel attempted to gate crash our party and even tried to obtain drinks at the bar - they were quickly and quietly removed by the manager and the situation was dealt with in an exceptional way. I have since found out that Incidentally these people tried pulling a fast one on paying for their room, and when they were caught, they put unfounded derogitory reviews on web sites about the hotel. The man said he was a landlord - in fact after a little research - he is an accountant living and working in Mansfield - his name is Nigel M****, so if he reads this review, I would urge him to remove his comments, because it was my party and you had no right to be there in the 1st place!!! :-)
We didn't want to pay a million dollars, and we certainly didn't expect to get it - but I don't know how the evening could have possibly been better.
Having read other reviews about The Punchbowl, I feel some people are a bit unfair - this is a 2* hotel with a brilliant bar, cracking food, clean rooms and 5* staff. This is a 2* hotel, and they don't pretend to be a 5*. The prices are that of a cheap B&B, and service and welcome are far superior. Some of the staff have been here for years and years - now that speaks for itself.
Thanks once again to James and his staff, and we'll look forward to coming up there for a drink soon.
Ashley & Emily

Room Tip: There isn't a public lift - however there are lots of very easily accessible ground floor rooms...

Just back from a weekend at this 2 star hotel. Friday night entertainment was really good and the food was fantastic. Staff were accommodating and we were impressed by James who was friendly and professorial and took good care of us. The hotel is a bit tired but for a 2 star hotel we thought it was really good value for money and perfectly adequate. We spent a day in Chichester which we loved and generally had a relaxing time. Breakfast was also good. Would definitely return.
