“Not a tourist spot”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

If you intend to visit Auroville, you need to take an appointment 2 days in advance, Otherwise you are just wasting your time going there. Only people with prior appointment can enter the Matrimandir. Rest of the visitors will not even get to go close to the building. you will have to see it from a distance of around 250 mts. You will have to walk around 1 to 1.5kms from the parking area. Women, kids and aged can avail the buggy facility. Inspite of the buggy you will have to walk around half a km just to see the structure from a distance. There's a video room that plays the interiors of the Matrimandir. This place is basically for meditation. Its a very good place if you want to experience silence and peace and meditate provided you book a slot in advance.

Personally, I would go to Goa than Pondi.

“Can't see, Can't say”
Reviewed 27 July 2014

I thought this place is over-hyped for the fact that it is usually in the must visit list when one goes to Pondy. However, I personally would not recommend this place cuz of the simple reason you cannot enter the place and really have an experience for yourself. The entry is restricted and one has to plan and book a slot for meditation beforehand. Although, I understand the reason behind doing this is that they don't want it to be just another touristy place and want people only seriously interested in spiritualism to benefit and take away from the experience. However, in that case, I feel if you have not got an approval to enter the MatriMandir, then there is not much to see in this place and you can definitely give it a miss. Just go there to kill time, if you have not much to do. This is not your regular tourist center, though it has turned into one.

“very bad for a tourist”
Reviewed 19 July 2014

after a long travel when you reach the place you are asked to take pass after viewing a video for 15 minutes, then you are made to walk for nearly 1.5 km in the hot sun, though there is a road upto the matri mandir, your vehicle will be stopped at a distance of 2 km. after all these trouble if you reach the so called matri mandir , you are stopped at a distance of 300m from the building . you will not be allowed inside. you can have only view of the globe. the people there and the posters claim that there is only love in that place. but very sad a traveller or the tourist is not allowed to see what is inside the so called globe. and what universal love is. one can see all the foreigners freely going and coming. certainly this not for the average indians and ordinary souls.

“Experience Silence....”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

I had some information about Auroville but learned about the Mandir just a day before going to Pondicherry. Auroville and the Matrimandir is like going into a different world. Yes, you have to go there a day before to book a slot for meditation for the first time...no phone calls. But Auroville should be a trip in itself for the seekers of calm and reflection....Impressively built temple and you can experience a deep silence inside, hard to leave in the allowed 10-12 minutes. I could probably sit there for an hour...Certainly I would plan more time to sit, read, and slow down next time.

“Learn about Auroville!”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

This was the last place we visited before we left to Bangalore. I wish if we had spent more time here. This area is very calm and worth spending time. One has to watch a video about Auroville to get free pass to go to matrimandir view point which is around 1 KM from visitor`s center. One has to reserve few days(2?) to get inside the matrimandir. One can read lot of thought provoking quotes by the mother. As mentioned in the video in visitor`s center, this is not a tourist spot but a place to search inner self. However, this indeed has become a tourist spot! One can get free bus service to matrimandir visiting point from Visitor`s center.
