Leave any preconceived notions about the madness of the Kamikaze pilots you may have grown up with - this memorial will leave you much saddened. The pilots were young men sacrificing themselves for their country and it was thought provoking to see the other side and the Japanese view of patriotism. There is little English translation inside but you can follow enough to understand. If I could have read all the letters and notes to parents and loved ones I think it would have been too overwhelming. An impressive collection including a number of planes.

This museum had a lot of artifacts and history of this memorable time in Japan history. It was very sad to learn how young these kamikaze pilots were and what sacrifice they each did for their country. They were really brave warriors knowing that they were off to fight and not return home.

Chiran Peace Museum – sits on the site of an old Japanese airbase. Many artifacts, photos, documents, equipment are on display. Many sakura trees (hundreds) lining the driveway were in full bloom so it was a pretty site (3/2014).

A visit to this museum reminded me of Clint Eastwood's film which presented the feelings of ordinary Japanese soldiers and their families embroiled in the Pacific War. This is 'the other side', the patriotism and sacrifice of idealistic young men who left loving parents and sweethearts for what they believed was a higher cause. This small museum allows us to look into their hearts through their photographs, wills, letters and notes to those they left behind, but doesn't really contribute to the cause of peace unless one reads into the futility of small airplanes taking their pilots to certain death as they attempt to bomb enemy warships. The videos assist in showing how the kamikaze pilots carried out their missions, but very little English is available except on the introductory pamphlet or audio tours.

Pilot aircrafts from World War II of Kamikaze crew, exhibits of final letters to their love ones, pictures, uniform were in display.
It was a sad place to visit, but the reason of war was not well addressed. Hired an audio English translation which said the reason of war was to maintain and sustain prosperity of the south east and union of south east countries as one piece. For proper education and nurturing of next generation, the truth and cause behind the war should be addressed and the dark side of human sentiments should be well revealed. Parental guidance is recommended for younger generations on the full history.

Chiran was famous for green tea. The large red tea pot model near the parking lot was lovely.
Access: bus ride of 1 hr 15 mins from Kagoshima Chuo station. Bus stop # East 16
