We spent the morning here as our cruise ship (Sun Princess) had docked in Maizuru. The pleasant train journey (40mins) added to the day. We first visited the View Land (via the cable car) which gives a magnificent view of the avenue of pine trees. Fortunately it was a beautiful day so the view over the bays & the Stairway to Heaven was superb. We all had to do the customary view by putting your head between your legs and imagining the stairway. It really does look like a stairway! The separate bays look like scallops from the hill. We then went back down & walked partially across the avenue. It is a beautiful place and, no doubt, it would get very crowded on weekend & holidays. We perhaps should have hired a bike & ridden across but our time was limited. Another interesting feature is the swinging bridge which opens & shuts very frequently to allow shipping through the channel. There are also many gift shops & eateries at the entry to the walkway. One of those beautiful natural attractions that will always be remembered.

I was a little bit disappointed. Amanohashidate is one of the three famous sceneries in Japan. Honestly, I wonder why. OK, is it nice there. And I was there in winter. This may affect my judgement.

The positive side:
There is a ropeway on both sides. The view is nice, really nice. There is a nice temple on the southern side, half way between the train station and the beginning of the sand bank. On the northern side there is a nice old temple. You have to take a bus from the upper ropeway station. Don't miss it. THis temple looks old, ancient, a lttle bit run down, but that gives him even more charme.

The drawback:
Walking the sandbank from one side to the other is a little bit boring. You can walk thru the pine trees or you can walk at the beach. That's it. Forest or beach. There is no awesome scenery, if you are at the sandband. The good scenery is ony from the view points on the hills on both sides.

The biggest disadvantage of this attraction is: Location, Location, Location. This rules don't only apply for real estate. It is a 2,5 hour ride (at least) from Kyoto or Osaka. Lucky, that you can visit mostly every interesting spot in the remaining time. The last stations are not covered by the Japan Rail Pass.

Im comparsion to the other sceneries: Only 3 stars. Miyajima is really something. 5 Stars. Matsushima is one step below (4 stars). In may opinion Amanohashidate is below Matsushima. This will result in 3 Stars. MAYBE in summer it is on the same level like Matsushima. But then there is still this location problem.

Suggestion: If you are in Osaka or Kyoto, skip it. You can use the day for a much more satisfying trip to somewhere else and closer. If your are travelling along the norther coast of Japan, you should consider a stop in Amanohashidate. Like I said: You can visit all interesting places on one day.

Called Amanohashidate, a beautiful place to visit especially when we did not expect a snow shower, the 3.3 km sand bar when covered by snow look like a hanging bridge to heaven, it is almost ethereal. We walk from one end to the other for almost an hour which is not advise able when its wet, bicycle rental are available and you could leave the bicycle on each of the other side if you wish to return by boat.

We didn't let the rain stop us from viewing the bridge to heaven. We chose to go up by cable car instead of the chair lift. You have to turn your back to the bay, bend over and look between your legs. Oh, an okole maluna means bottoms up.
