We were very fascinated by this wonderful place, for us the best excurtion that we had in Okinawa. The flora in this valley would seem to have been the inspiration of Avatar movie....You could enter in this attraction only by previous booking with a guided tour...it is pity is that they speak only in Japanese, and throught some information paper that they give to us before entering in the valley we read a lot of interesting things regarding this magic place, and so would be much appreciated have a english speaking tour guide....!

You must visit in tour groups and the cost is 2000 yen per person, so there is only so many tours per day. Reservations are recommended, although I just walked on, but had to wait 1 hr for the tour to start. You can wait in the neat Cave Cafe at the entrance, by ordering food, which is what I did.

The Gangala Valley tour is highly recommended because the tour route is now closed to the public. The Okinawans used to visit the caves a lot in the old days due to superstition and tradition, but now the path has gates which are locked. Also you will realize how many caves are in the southern Okinawa area in addition to the huge one at Okinawa World. If you visit the Peace Park and the Himeyuri Memorial, you will realize how much these caves were used during the war for shelter by the Okinawan civilians and Japanese Navy. The caves were also used by prehistoric people in Okinawa.

One interesting tidbit about the Gangala Tour is that they found there is only a 15 cm difference in depth of the surface of the area compared to prehistoric times. Therefore the valley now looks how it did thousands of years ago.

The tour guide does so much talking in Japanese during the tour, it is not feasible for English translations to be given. However they do give you notes in English which you can read beforehand, so you can pretty much match up the notes to each spot that is visited, and can get a good idea of what the tour guide is saying.

Luckily, I speak a little bit of the language. I visited several times to try and arrange a tour, where some great photos could be taken. The staff are very polite and helpful. When I did take the tour, we had a friend along with us to make reservations (by phone) and help us understand the briefings given before/during the tour. Even if you don't understand Japanese, it is a sight to see and take photos of. They do have some signs, pamphlets and information, you may be able to take photos of, if you want to learn more about the history of the caves. Good walking shoes are recommended for touring the site. Sandals or, flip-flops are not advised because some places could be slippery or, ankle twisters. I don't think it is stroller or, handicapped friendly. And, places where kerosene lanterns must be used, are probably not safe for young children. A five star review goes to the staff and the adventure experienced on the tour. It is such a treasure, I plan on going back again. Highly recommended to all my friends.

I went to Gangala no taki in January with my friend.
Gangala no taki is located right in front of Okinawa World.
We have taken a guided tour and it takes about an hour and half.
It will cost you 2,000yen per person.

A tour guide will only speak Japanese but it is worth visitting this place. Although she doesn't speak English, she tried her best to explain to us which I found it really sweet. If you like trecking or hikikng or if you like a cave man! I'm sure you will love it!
