I strongly warn any foreigner in japan to avoid this ryokan, unless you want to be interrogated by the japanese police. My wife (japanese) and I went to visit Izumo Taisya. Booked in advance checked at about 11 am smoothly enough. The room was very poor, walls cracked fittings rusted walls rotten and mildewed, see photos . Dusty futons had us both sneezing. After sightseeing we returned 8.30 pm. I speak fluent japanese, being resident in japan for several years, this was no misunderstanding. The receptionist demanded that I present my passport and let him photocopy it. I asked if this was normal. no Just for foreigners. I politely told him that I did not have my passport with me, I objected that this was discrimination. He agreed, and still demanded ID. I allowed him to photocopy my Japanese Drivers License. I have since searched the law. For resident foreigners who have ID Drivers Licence or Gaijin Card, You do not Have to produce a Passport. Also Only a police man can demand you present your Passport. They DO NOT have the right to photocopy your personal documents. That is your choice. then we went on to our room. I presume he was not satisfied with my ID and called the police. When my wife and I checked out the next day we were stopped at the doorway by undercover police and questioned about our identity. My advice to foreigners. NEVER VISIT TAKENOYA
