The Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine is one of the most important and oldest shrines of Japan. It is dedicated to love, so many young girls travel there to pray for a good relationship or marriage or for finding a boyfriend. In 2013 it is god's 60-year relocation year, so at the moment when I visited it was really crowded. But usually it is a quiet place. The main building complex of the shrin is maintained every 60. year, so it is really rare to see the relocating of the buildings. A special sight is the huge rice straw rope on one of the main buildings.
My recommendation is to buy one of the lovely lucky charms, because they have some special charms for love, which are said to have a positive effect on your love life.
Around the shrine you can see the beautiful nature and a mountainous landscape. It is also next to a beach. Therefore it is a good place to relax and to meditate in a special atmosphere.

Since this year is this god's 60-year relocation year, there were so many people there. The house of this god is maintained every 60 year. Maybe we can be the timing of 60-year relocation one time in our lifetime. The shrine is one of the oldest in Japan. This is very holy and sacred place. My recommendation is the slope from the gate to shrine. In the middle of the down slope, I had some grateful feeling which is difficult to express in words.

Izumotaisha shrine was a really enjoyable place to visit and there's enough to see including the immediate surrounding area to take up at least half a day. The shrine itself is impressive, a collection of beautiful wooden structures with huge twisting ropes where people come to pray to find love from all over Japan. There's large grounds and the Treasure Museum in the shrine complex is cheap to enter with some interesting relics. The shrine's entrance is opposite a nice street with shops, restaurants and a tourist information centre that has English speakers who gave some good recommendations and actually ended up helping me plan my day.

If you visit Shimane Prefecture, spend a day in Izumo and visit the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine. The shrine is surrounded by hills and forest, enhancing the shrine's natural and traditional beauty. The shrine has many different buildings, giving the eyes plenty to look at and admire. The architecture of the buildings are impressive. Next to the shrine is a large garden. Here, visitors may enjoy the different trees, statues, and smaller shrines along the way. The garden leads to the main streets of Izumo. If you find yourself wanting more tradition, beauty, and culture the Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo is right next door.

If you happen to be passing Izumo, then is Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine definitely worth to visit. A really beautiful shrine complex, which is surrounded by nature. The shrine it self is devided in several buildings and you can really enjoy walking around the complex and the garden, because there are not many tourists and the place it self conveys peace and pleasent quiet. At one of the buildings you will find the largest sacred straw rope "shimenawa", which is amazing.
The shrine is dedicated to the god of marrige, so a lot of Japanese young people come here to pray for a good relationship, marrige or for finding a partner soon.
