Fans of youkai--or fans of classic manga--will enjoy the atmosphere, the characters are anywhere and everywhere. Lots of restaurants and gift shops (or normal barber shops and such) find clever ways to incorporate the theme, and there are local street food vendors and potters as well. If youkai, manga, and folklore aren't your thing, however, you might jusy find it weird and want to skip it.

I've never been much of an anime follower, but this town has a certain energy about it. Mixed in with all the anime shops are lots of fun arts & crafts shops, local seafood stands and funny statues lining the streets. Sakaiminato is an active fishing port, is is well known for snagging some amazing tuna (まぐろ) pronounced maguro.

I spent only about an hour roaming the streets, but it was a fun sample of Japanese culture I don't always get to see. You can take a bus from Yonago Station, but I had a car. Free parking everywhere! Here, you'll also find some of the ferries that will take you to offshore island and Korea! It's not so much an attraction, as it is a fun little town, with funny things to explore. Be sure to stock up on souvenirs while you're here. There's definitely things you won't find elsewhere.

Obviously, if you end up in Sakaiminato, you know about Shigeru Mizuki and Gegege no Kitaro. Mizuki is a famous manga artist and Kitaro is his most enduring character. Mizuki Shigeru Road is a calvalcade of creepy creatures. Everything in this town is Yokai themed. Even the taxis have eyeball lights on their rooves. The train from Yonago is a lovely little ride and each station along the way has a mizuki character on the sign. The main road has over a hundred bronze sculptures of Mizuki's yokai characters. Every shop, every eatery and every bakery is Mizuki/Kitaro themed. Be sure to try the tuna burger stand a couple of blocks up from the station on the left hand side.
