All rooms have a river view, huge delicious breakfasts and dinners, 2 private free onsens which don't need a reservation, very nice staff. English speaking son and Japanese mother and father run the small 5-or-6 room hotel. Sleepy town with natural hot springs which can be found to make your own onsens in the river

This Swiss style chalet is situated next to the river in which you can dig your own Onsen. If you like a bit more privacy, you can use the private Onsen in the guesthouse. The staff is extremely friendly. We were very unlucky with the weather, but we still had a great time thanks to the owner who gave us a personal tour. He even let us take a look in the oldest, traditional guesthouse and Onsen in the area. The food is delicious and the staff is happy to adjust i to your every needs, for instance when you are a vegetarian. The area is very beautiful and the pilgrims route is only a short drive away.

We spent a night at Pension Ashitanomori last month when we were exploring the Wakayama region of Kansai. The Pension is very conveniently located in the centre of town and the river is right opposite the main door. They provide you with a shovel and you can literally dig a bath tub for yourself in the river bed (you have to dig by the side, where the hot water percolates up from the rocks). If the water is too hot, just mix in a bit of the river water. It's a surreal feeling soaking in the hot water in the freezing cold at night, looking at the constellations.

The Pension is run by a very friendly and hospitable family. I wish we could have stayed longer here. The owners gave us very helpful guidance on what to see and do in the region ("go hiking", he said, "it's good for health!"), along with bus timings and were constantly reminding us not to miss the bus. The beef steak for dinner was also very nicely done (medium rare, the way I like it), and the food was superb, if not an interesting blend of Western and Japanese.

The rates were also very, very reasonable. The biggest plus for the Pension has to be the private onsen they have (there are 2). In other ryokans, you usually have to pay to use the private onsen (especially if you are a couple, since almost all onsen are gender-specific in Japan). Here, you are free to use either of the 2 onsen at any time convenient for yourself. I found this a really nice touch.

Room Tip: There are only 6 rooms in the Pension, and all are done up to a very cosy standard.

This hotel is very well located to explore onsens, hongu shrine and pilgrimage roads. The owners are very kind and helpfully brought us by car where we wanted, as the buses are scarce.
The meals in the hotel are fantastic, specially the beef.
Just in front of the hotel holes are dig in the riverside and they get filled by hot springs. You can have a bath in them, looking at the nature which is a very unique and unforgettable experience. Hotel has its own onsen that you can privatise.
Only black point: the toilets are shared and there's no private bathroom.

Absolutely loved this place. We stayed for 2 nights and could easily have stayed longer. The hospitality and food were wonderful, the best we've had so far! Everything was done meticulously and with care. Our rooms were beautiful, great bath facilities, river onsen opposite and we were given a lot of help and advice to help us enjoy the area. Perfect location and a perfect stay!! If you're in the area you'll not be disappointed if you pick this place.

A very restful two days spent at this friendly accommodation. Peaceful surroundings. Unusual river onsens just across from the hotel . Good food and kindly hosts. Bus stop nearby to take you to many of the area's sights. May be worth getting a Wakayama Bus Pass. Inside baths and laundry facilities very good. Good souvenir shop with local products.

We arrvied at Pension Ashitanomori after a long day trek from Tajikiri and couldn't have arrived at a better place. The staff were so friendly and helpful and the outdoor onsens were a fantastic way to end the days walk. We also used the inside onsens which are family onsens and were really great. Dinner was an absolutely delicious steak and again service was fantastic. We had to leave on the early bus and there was no problem being up to give us a full breakfast at 5:30am. I would really recommend this as your stopping point!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Ashitanomori, our most distinctive guesthouse, is located along the Oto River in Kawayu, nationally famous for its unique hot springs. At Ashitanomori, you will enjoy a casual, informal stay in Kawayu in an atmosphere of beautiful and peaceful nature. Here in Kawayu spa, hot mineral waters come up from the riverbed. Right in front of our inn, by the river, you choose a likely spot and dig out a natural “hot tub” along the riverside and wait for it to fill with hot water and your own private outdoor bath. We have all the tools you need to get you started. In summer, you can enjoy both swimming in the river’s cold water and relaxing in open-air hot springs. In winter, a magnificent huge open-air hot spring, called SENNINBURO, is waiting for you. The name is a play on the word for ‘thousand’, a reference to the fact that you could squeeze about 1000 bathers into this open-air tub. ... more   less
