“TIP TOP TRADITIONAL”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

The usual problem with old inns is that they don't have all the amenities and comforts the modern traveller wants and gets used to, or that they don't take kindly to having these things imposed upon them. However, The George Inn manages this transition exceptionally well. I know the sound proofing of the rooms in the main building can be problematic if you are unlucky enough to get a late night reveller next door but those in the stable block are OK. What is wonderful is the sense of history and tradition that goes with the place. This inn was used by the Duke of Monmouth's as a night HQ during his retreat into the West Country and a battle was fought just down the street. To the hotel user this history translates as oak beamed lowish ceilings, creaky floorboards and four posters but into this set up the owners have introduced reasonably spacious bathrooms, walk-in wardrobes, comfortable mattresses and sympathetic but adequate lighting for a stopover if not for a workplace. This is alongside hair-dryers, tea/coffee facilities and a flat-screen TV.. The evening food was first class and the breakfast marvellous - I wish other places could source sausages of that quality! The bar serves good beer (Wadworth's) and although it is possible to eat in the bar, there is a separate dining room. The staff couldn't do enough for me and I was particularly impressed by the chap who served breakfast. There is also a pretty spacious car park whioch is very welcome in this small town. Yes it's a traditional half-timbered inn with not every modern convenience (there's no lift up the first floor - you have to use stairs and mobile phone reception for the area is poor), but, if you want a tip top place to stay for night or a few days especially if visiting Bath, then you really should give this place a try.

Room Tip: They're all good but the those above the outside courtyard can be quieter. 'Carthusian'...

Poor reception service. Hard bed. A lot of noise from the adjacent road. Asked for a room change...no chance. Poor lighting in the rooms. Watch out for the low ceilings.Would like to say something positive but can't. Couldn't wait to get away, would rather sleep in my car!!!!

Just go there for the building, it is amazing, we did not stay at the hotel but we ate in the restaurant. It was on a Sunday early evening. The menu was restricted and not everything was available, the place was empty although it was a bright sunny evening. The food was below average, the portions quite small and uneven, our friends had a larger portion than us of the desert we shared. The mains really plain and ordinary. Do not go there for the food. In fact just drive past the building and go and eat somewhere else. I must praise the staff in the restaurant, the young chap who served us (he comes from Swindon) was really charming and he deserves a rise!

This. 13thC Inn has a character that takes one back to the past. The food was excellent and staff very helpful. The bedroom was comfortable with oak beam ceiling. A nice night to spend before our onward journey home.

Room Tip: There are no ghosts, well we never saw one!!

A fantastic historic half-timbered pub with historic features both inside & out. A real idyllic English historic pub. We had a pint in here on a glorious summer's day. It also has a great beer garden out back with a beautiful panoramic English countryside vista. A must if you are a tourist!

Full of character and very friendly. Great for the solo traveller. A far better experience in my view than a night in an anonymous corporate hotel. Just need to find another excuse to stay here on a business trip again!

I have recently stopped several times at this amazing pub for lunch. It has a beautiful sunken garden overlooking the cricket pitch and park. The valley stretches down and the views are breathtaking. There is some parking but it is limited. The inside is ancient and it is stepping back in history. The staff are very relaxed, welcoming and professional. The food is delicious. It's unpretentious, well presented, very good local produce expertly prepared. I would love to stay at this place and hope to do so very soon. If you're driving around the local area between Bath, Radstock, Downside, Kilmersdon then do visit if only for a quick drink, rest and you won't be disappointed.
