Description: Meals Are Served Monday To Saturday Between 12pm & 15pm and 18pm & 21pm Sunday Between 12pm & 16pm The Half Moon is a cosy, 200 year old country pub located in the Ditchling Road in Plumpton, only five minutes from Lewes. Popular as a meeting place for walkers and cyclists, the pub has a fresh, seasonal menu featuring local produce and is renowned for its home cooked specialties and traditional Sunday roasts. With an open fire, a bar serving Plumpton wines, fresh apple juice from Ringden farm and Sussex bitters, and a terrace as well as seven acres of picnic grounds - The Half Moon is a lovely spot to spend an afternoon. We highly recomend the Harvey's ale battered Pollock with hand-cut chips and minted pea purée, and the home made chocolate brownies with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream.

“Delicious fish lunch”
Reviewed 28 June 2014 via mobile

Friends chose this pub as a venue for a birthday celebration and it certainly did not disappoint. The whole sea bream with herb butter was fresh, well cooked and delicious. A wonderful surprise was the innovative samphire bhaji accompaniment- crisp and delightful and which I would happily have eaten on its own.
On a sunny June Saturday the outside eating area was packed and quite noisy although the service was good throughout. The wine list seemed quite reasonably priced.
Would definitely return for the bhaji alone!

“"Very poor welcome"”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

We arrived on a Sunday lunchtime very after a long walk through the lovely surrounding countryside. We expected it to be busy and there were no free tables outside, but we could see a couple inside. Having never been here before we stood by the "wait to be seated" sign just outside the door. We could see how busy the staff were but at least five waiters and waitresses walked straight past us totally ignoring us even though we were so obviously waiting to be acknowledged. We decided to go inside where we waited and again were totally ignored by more members of staff, eventually a young man who had just finished on the phone asked "can I help" but at this point we were totally disgruntled at such a poor reception that we ended up driving to another pub where we knew we were guaranteed of a good welcome! Maybe they just saw us as an inconvenience on an already very busy lunch time, but surely if you treat all your customers with that bad service and disinterest you will end up having none, its just a shame we never got to sample the highly recommended food on here due to the worst welcome we have ever experienced at any eatery!

“Somewhere you can recommend”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

I have made quite a few visits to the Half Moon under different circumstances so I can be even handed in my assessment. The service can be good to ‘we have forgotten you are there’

They have a good kitchen, the results are generally first rate but some of the dishes are more expensive than they should be. Having said that they do use mostly local produce which may even things out.

The range beers are limited but well chosen including a local ‘Long Man’ brew and Harvey’s Sussex.

If you time your visit to when things are quieter and you sit inside you will get the service you deserve. If you sit outside with a full house inside you may well be forgotten about.

In any event your bill might be more than you expect and if you choose wrongly or don’t ask what you will get on the plate you could leave feeling hungry.

So for something quite tasty and easy on the wasteline in a nice location this could be your place.

“Smallest Child Portions ever”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

Arrived on a Saturday lunchtime (May 31st). This is a fantastic location for a pub. We decided to have lunch. There were four adults and three children. The adults meal sizes were ok, but the children ended up having to have some of our food as they were still starving (none of them are porkers). Their ham and chips consisted of five chips each and a tiny piece of ham. Everything else was fine apart from the fact the playground area is not near the tables that serve food, but this is fairly minor.
