We have just returned from spending two marvellous weeks at “Lakeside Guesthouse Athoor south India” and we can safely say it was a most delightful and informative holiday. “Lakeside” (not to be confused with others with similar addresses) itself is situated approximately one hundred meters from the shore of Lake Kamaraj giving an idyllic setting while enjoying the natural beauty within it’s seven acres of private land flanked by mountains. There is always something to see in its colourful gardens with an abundance of birdlife, wildlife, to local fishermen in their coracles spreading their nets as they have been doing over the centuries. One can always relax after a days sightseeing, thoughtfully arranged by Dorinda and Peter, in the lovely swimming pool or having a refreshing drink on the terrace.

One of the highlights of the day is indulging in before dinner refreshments on the rooftop watching the delightful sunset over the lake as it slowly goes behind the mountain giving peace and tranquillity to the evening, and the wonderful meal presented to us.

The owners Peter and Dorinda are a wonderful couple who with their staff make sure you are well looked after and tend to your every need.

We intend to return hopefully in the near future and encourage anyone who is thinking in going to south India to stay at “Lakeside.”

Thank you so much Dorinda and Peter for making our stay so enjoyable and comfortable.

Strongly recommended for anyone travelling in Southern India who wants a few days relief from the general chaos. An air pocket of tranquility set in a little valley, overlooking a beautiful lake, just off the beaten track, but within easy reach of the great temple city of Madurai. The owners, an immensely hospitable English couple -- Peter and Dorinda Balchin -- will organise local excursions. One of the greatest pleasures is sitting on the terrace in the early morning, watching the sun rise over the lake and listening to the chatter of exotic birds (over 100 different species have been identified). And in the evening, dinner is served on the roof terrace. I spent five days there in January and thoroughly enjoyed it.

LAKESIDE GUEST HOUSE is situated about 100 yards from the shores of Lake Kamaraj, on a terraced grassy bank. It has a main building containing 4 en-suite bedrooms, some with air-con; a satellite TV room with computer and internet access, DVDs and dartboard ; a casual lounge area with board games and books available; a central area, open both ends to give a welcoming breeze, with tables and chairs for eating or “working”, plus a large kitchen and office.
In the spacious grounds there are 4/5 separate cottages, each with a bedroom, lounge area and private terrace. All rooms and cottages offer spectacular views across the lake.
In the beautifully landscaped gardens there are many trees, shrubs and flowers including bougainvillea which attract large numbers of birds including peacocks, brain-fevers, drongo, common mynah, babbler, coucal, franklins, doves, Indian robins and a spectacular kingfisher. The plants also support a wide variety of butterflies.
Set aside from the main building, in a quiet area, is a large swimming pool which is kept immaculately clean. Around the pool there are shaded seating areas.
During our 12 day stay over Christmas and New Year we were treated to excellent home-cooked European and Southern Indian dishes which included a good selection of meat, fish and fresh local vegetables. A typical breakfast for us comprised fresh pineapple or papaya, fruit juice, cornflakes or muesli with dried fruits and, when requested, eggs cooked to our liking with toast and marmalade and an endless supply of fresh teas and coffee. Dinner was often served on the roof terrace under beautiful star-lit skies and included a very special Christmas Night Dinner with all the trimmings.
Our room number 6 was in the main building and comprised two very comfortable twin beds, wardrobe, table, chair, luggage rack, bedside table, ceiling fan and air-con, with an ensuite shower and toilet fitted, unusually for India, to a very high modern specification.
Our room opened out onto a south-facing terrace that ran the full length of the building and on which breakfast was served opposite our room, overlooking the lake and the mountains rolling into the distance. Some of the sunrises and sunsets we saw were spectacular. In the early morning we saw fishermen collecting their catch from small round coracles made locally from papier-mache.
Throughout our stay the staff of 5 looked after us in a quietly attentive and very friendly manner, always courteous and overseen by the manager Kennedy who spoke excellent English. Nothing seemed too much trouble for them. Tea, coffee and other drinks were available throughout the day.
The rooms were thoroughly cleaned every day and towels and bed-linen changed regularly.
The owners, Peter and Dorinda Balchin, who came from Swindon in UK 3 years ago, are both charming and efficient and cater where possible to your every need. During our stay we enjoyed some organised visits to Kodaikanal, the flower and fish markets at Dindigul and a tour of the nearby little village of Athoor. This gave us an insight into the everyday life of many south Indian families.
When it came time to leave, we were reluctant to do so as we felt we had become part of the family, such was the friendliness and attention we had received. We will definitely be keeping in touch and hope to return soon to what, for us, was paradise.
A word of advice – Lakeside Guest House is the only establishment that actually sits on the lakeside of Lake Kamaraj and has an uninterrupted view of the lake and hills beyond. There are other nearby guest-houses which have begun to include the word “Lakeside” in their address. Our driver found this very confusing, but remember that “Lakeside Guest House” is the first one along the roadway and, most important, the only one with a swimming pool!

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building give great views over the lake. Cottages in the gardens offer more priva...

We stayed a couple of nights here and strongly recommend it to anyone. It is a beautiful spot, run by fabulous people with lovely private detached accommodation available and an excellent pool. Hats off to the owners - they have thrown themselves heart and sole into this project and have the enthusiasm and expertese to carry it off which they thoroughly deserve to do.

The food was excellent (have the masala omlette for breakfast!) and dinner on the roof under the stars should be high on the list.

We are lucky enough to live in India (albeit 6 hrs drive from this place) and cant wait to return for another truly relaxing, informal and charming stay.

We only stayed in the Lakeside Gust House for two nights. But after the hustle and bustle of Madurai the Lakeside was a great relief. What a nice and quiet place. Nice swimmingpool, good food and an extremely hospitable staff and owners.

Room Tip: For a short stay we recommend the rooms on the veranda with a view over the lake.
