This place is an oasis where you can swing from bamboo hammocks while drinking yummy reasonably-priced cocktails. The service is excellent, and the room is clean, modern, and befitting of 4+ star hotels. We told them our arrival time, and there was a person from Mali Resort waiting to take our luggage to the Resort. This is important because if you have roller luggage, you can’t roll it on the sand, but Mali Resort took care of everything. Service was done with a smile, and if you encountered a staff that didn’t understand English, they’d get someone who would. I’d rather have staff tell me they don’t understand and get help than pretend they do, as that just leads to frustration.
I knocked off one star because the bathroom made me very uncomfortable. We booked the bungalow (which is cheaper), and the bathroom floor was almost always wet. The shower is open and not separated from anything, so when you take a shower, everything gets wet. Be sure to leave the toilet seat down! This is a good place to train your significant other to leave the toilet seat down because the the toilet seat can get wet when someone takes a shower which can be very gross. A wet floor doesn’t seem like a big deal, but the bungalow is dark (just a few small slots for ventilation), and it was culturally very difficult for me to get used to.
I think the villas may not have this problem, they look open air, but we didn’t book the villa because of price and reviews claimed mosquitoes were in the bathrooms (the mosquitoes come out at night.) Maybe the problem can be remedied by bringing slippers. (Or if the management put in a fan or shower stalls to protect spraying water.) It’s weird because the rest of the resort is so well-designed and thought out, that the bathrooms are not on par with the rest of the resort and rooms.
Everything else about this hotel is excellent, so it’s hard to knock down a star. I would recommend this hotel to my friends if all other hotels in Lipe have this same issue (don’t know if any hotels on Koh Lipe have normal bathrooms), but would warn them about this major caveat. Other than that, it is a beautiful room, beautiful grounds, thoughtful service, and thoughtful design. I can see why it’s at the top.
The massage right next door (the one to the left as you step out and go toward Walking Street) is one of the few that have real massage tables with holes for the face/head. Go there for massages, they are excellent and as cheap as the other places.
