Several years ago, while cruising, we visited the Normandy area on a very rushed shore excursion. The only good thing from that tour was that it whetted our appetite to see more. Now, a decade letter, we found Ben and Jaye and their D-Day Tours and Bed and Breakfast.
First, the B&B and Jaye's exceptional cooking were a destination in itself. After a long day of touring we "came home" to a delicious home cooked meal and a relaxing environment complete with pre-dinner wine and a beautiful dog wagging his tail in welcome. Then, we were sent off the next day with a great breakfast which included some of the best bread in France!
The tour experience was even more than we had hoped for. The way Ben combines many historical photos to show the "then and now" makes one feel like they were there. His personal knowledge and research of the area are intangibles that cannot be replicated in any other tour. And certainly, a visit with Lucien - a man who was 10 years old on June 6, 1944, was a highlight.
If you are headed to Normandy I can't imagine finding a better host and hostess, better meals and bedrooms, or a more knowledgeable tour guide - and all in one place and at a great price! Best part of our month long trip to Europe!!
Our trip to Normandy was the centerpiece of our European trip. We could have had no better guide than Ben, who in creative and poignant ways, brought the story of Normandy to life.
Equally delightful was the warm and gracious hospitality of the beautiful manor. Jaye was an amazing hostess and the new friends we made were an added serendipity. We did not want to leave!
Weather was cool but acceptable. Ben and Jaye are the perfect hosts and we really felt their warm welcome. Jaye is a great cook and meals were memorable. She even accommodated food issues. Of course Ben's vast knowledge of the events of D-Day were mesmerizing and we really enjoyed his in depth stories, museums and photos of many skirmishes including the back country. It was great to get out of Paris and into the beautiful countryside and meet neat and lovely people. The manor house and grounds are spectacular. Ready to return, minus Paris and the uncertainty of French railroads.
In all aspects this was a wonderful tour and experience. Ben and Jaye are truly wonderful and gracious hosts - from the first minute we felt welcome and at ease. The house is beautiful and comfortable and the meals were excellent. The tour itself is extremely well structured and Ben is very knowledgeable as he takes us to one incredible stop after another. As I have told many of my friends, this probably qualifies as the best tour I have ever taken.
What an absolutely outstanding experience! First of all, our hosts - Ben, Jaye and their dog Saffy - were so welcoming, warm-hearted and interesting to be with! We felt like part of the family! The lodging and meals at the manor were beyond compare! Then there were the tours - EXCEPTIONAL! Ben’s knowledge of what transpired on June 6, 1944 is beyond vast - it is personal. His approach to his tours is very much home-spun with stories and events that took place right there on or near the property. One of the highlights of the tour was meeting Lucien, who was 10 years old on that historic day. He recounted all that he had experienced as if it was just yesterday. You can’t get this type of personal touch on just any tour - only with Ben’s! We hit all the major D-Day sites with Ben’s expert explanations and then had delicious lunches at local establishments where all seemed to know Ben personally. Since I have been home, I have told all my friends about Ben’s tour and strongly suggested that they sign up - I do the same with whoever reads this review. Sign up - you will be so glad that you did!
My son and I had the pleasure of spending three nights and two days with Ben and Jaye. With two other couples who were at the house, we were treated to fantastic dinners, good conversation, and a very unique perspective on the US D-Day landings. On the first day, Ben does a wonderful job of bringing the idea of the greater conflict to very specific and granular details, providing a rousing narrative on what transpired from the early morning hours of June 6th through the first days of the campaign in the area right around where you're staying. The second day widens the scope as you begin to see the greater scope of the operation. Our only wish is that there had been more hours in the day to spend! Truly highly recommended.
Cannot day enough good things about this experience. Ben was recommended by a friend who says he was very impressed with the experience. This does not come close to quantifying I and my family’s trip. Ben imparts his expertise with far more knowledge and personality than your typical guide... And you stay in his house! Make sure you watch the second episode of “Band of Brothers” and Saving Private Ryan before you go! Don’t leave without talking to Ben’s neighbor Lucien a local who lived through the entire occupation and liberation of Normandy.
