Review of Abbaye de Jumieges

Abbaye de Jumieges
Ranked #1 of 2 things to do in Jumieges
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 21 September 2018

Tucked neatly at the foot of the hill, Abbaye de Jumieges is simply must do, must see attraction. Built over 1400 years ago, although in ruins there's eough still standing to offer the visitor a taste of hat the abbey was like during its occupation,

A spectacular ruin and grounds. Not to be missed and the visit is not expensive when compared with what you'd have to pay in the U.K. The history is explained in pamphlet and on boards as you go round

Impressive to see ruins of this Abbey built over 1400 years ago and partly destroyed by the Vikings about 1100 years ago. Worth the visit. Admission cost €6.50

Without a doubt one of our favourite places when in this area of Normandy.
Idyllic grounds, relaxing and immaculately looked after, the ruins are impressive and you can spend as long or as little there. There are facilities, lovely gift shop, and large games - Chess and Draughts on the lawn.
Guided tours available but not necessary.

Over the road is a picnic area, as they prefer you not to eat inside.

The abbey itself is absolutely worth visiting if you're anywhere near the Rouen area. It's a magnificent site with much of the ancient buildings still upright. Impressive to look at and great for kids to explore.
There are a few things that might annoy visitors, though. When we visited (July '18) we could only pay cash at the ticket office.
One of the perks of this site is the virtual 3D experience which should allegedly work on all smartphones and tablets through the app. However, the app hasn't been updated in a while and therefore does not work on iOS devices. So if you're an Apple user, you are forced to rent a device on site, which costs you another €5.
