We agree fully with ChopPhooey's review back in 2007. We too found the rooms tired, the grey housing estate location depressing. and public transport to Edinburgh diabolical (we gave up after 30 minutes on a bus and no end in site -- as we found out later, there is a faster alternative, but the owner failed to disclose it even though asked). Having said that, the faster alternative is not that fast, so if thinking to stay here and visit Edinburgh without taking the car, think again.

The owner was trying to be friendly, but need to be sensitive to when guests are not interested in long personal stories.

On the plus note, it's clean and has decent amenities.

For the price point and its 4-star rating, we were extremely disappointed, and equally disappointed with the owner's seeming unconcern with our dissatisfaction. We expressed our unhappiness while staying there but the owner made no concessions or suggestions to improve our experience. Wish we'd stayed somewhere else.

I arrived at the Ivory House in the middle of a snowstorm - most transportation was shut down, and it had been a long journey to get there. I was warmly greeted by Jack and Barbara, who immediately brought hot tea and made me feel very welcome as I joined my extended family. There was a warm, pleasant sitting room with books and games and a fire which we comfortably passed many hours in, watching the snow fall outside the huge picture window. I slept very well in a large, comfortable bed. Everything was clean and elegant. At breakfast, my vegetarian diet was more than accommodated - there were special vegetarian sausages and other delicious items cooked by Jack. As my family and I waited for news of our international flights (the airports were closed due to snow) Jack and Barbara helped us by making calls, coordinating travel, and waking up in the middle of the night to do it all again. When I finally left, it was thanks to the kindness of Jack, who drove me all the way to Edinburgh despite snowy roads and closed bus service. The entire visit was characterized by comfort and kindness, with no shortage of beautiful surroundings. I would highly recommend this guesthouse to other travelers - the space is lovely, the food is excellent, and I couldn't ask for better hosts. This is what makes travel meaningful!

This B & B was wonderful. From the very first step inside the door, you are made more than welcome. The Ivory House is a magnificently maintained, Victorian double storied, stone house with attractive gardens.
Breakfast is a highlight and the conversation is pleasant and enlighening. Nothing was too much trouble for Barbara and Jack and we were genuinely sad to leave their guesthouse.
This is world class hospitality, make no mistake, and is most highly recommended.
Close to Edinburgh, golf courses, the sea, the countryside and the hills, we cannot wait to return.

We used Ivory House for 3 nights to visit the Edinburgh Festival on the recommendation of a friend. The owners are welcoming and the rooms are clean with their own character..if you want same old same old then use a Travelodge or a Premier Inn. Same if you want to be annoymous then this isnt the place for you!!
I was already aware of the area and knew that it was situated some miles away from Edinburgh itself and had a significant bus ride home, but there are cheap and frequent buses and that there were buses back throughout the night
As it was festival time I had underestimated how this would impact on the buses and they would take much longer than had been anticipated. But in my opinion the somewhat drawn out bus ride (between 45mins-60 mins at night) was far compensated by the safe feeling of the location, the quietness(some areas of Edinburgh sleep can be impossible during festival), lovely gardens, breakfast with a nothing too much trouble attitude by the owners and facilities.
I have booked the same place for same time next year and intend if possible to use it as a base when I am travelling alone to visit Edinburgh.
Like anywhere else if you look hard enough and want to find a complaint you will but not me. I will be back!!

After staying at Ivory House on two occations, three nights each time, we warmly recommend this wonderful place and it's hosts.

When we arrived we immediately felt welcome being greeted by both Jack and Barbara. It feels like you are visiting with family.

In the rooms and bathrooms everything is up to standard. The beds are comfortable and the rooms are equipped with flat screen TVs and easily accessed wireless internet.

After being out all day in rainy weather, we were approached and asked if we would like to have a pot of tea. There is also a hospitality tray for guests in the sitting room, but it's that kind of extra attention we got at Ivory House.

At Ivory House we have had THE best Scottish breakfast with a wide range of Scottish specialities and fresh fruit.
Jack is also an unexhaustible ressource of scottish history and geography. A lot of the geography is selfexperienced. He is always ready to offer advice on where to go, what to see or what to do.

Barbera & Jack are genuinely concerned that you enjoy your stay in Scotland.

We arrived about 4:00 in the afternoon after a day of learning to drive the backroads of Scotland. We were on a tour of the area and had just come from The Scottish Mining Museum in Newtongrange and the Borthwick Castle. Family had lived in the area 125 years ago so we had just met new family who kindly guided us through the area. We were met by Barbara and slowly checked in despite the confusion with our new cousin. The room was small but we had it all to ourselves and enjoyed the garden and meeting Jack, our other host. He was preparing a dinner for friends and took the time to chat with us. We had an unexpected visit from another set of cousins and Barbara graciously set us up in the great room, brought us tea and checked on us from time to time to time to make sure our visit was going well. We were in the great room for over 2 hours and felt very much at home. Our guests left and we were guided to a wonderful dinner at the Coronation Inn within walking distance. We had a great dinner and walked back. We slept like babes. Breakfast was a great celebration of eggs, Scottish sausage, haggis, toast, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, good coffee. Jack regaled us with Scottish tales and history and we left relunctantly for the Newbattle Old Cemetery with only 1 night a the wonderful Ivory House. It is a must for any visit to the area. It is also quite green for those of you who look for places who are conscious to stay.

Stayed at the Ivory House whilst attending a local wedding. Stayed in the Coach House, which is a small apartment with seperate lounge and kitchen, which was ideal as we had our 7 week old baby. A cot bed was supplied (though there was a £20 supplement). The kitchen was well stocked, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher. The apartment was clean and tidy, though a little worn, but nothing major. The cooked breakfast was excellent. Like may B&B's the TV/reception could do with upgrading, not that we used it much. A CD player/radio is suppled in the bedroom and there is a little garden attached to the coach house.

An above average B&B, ideal for people visiting the area. Though the village it's situated in looks a little run down, though there are buses every 15 mins into Edinburgh.

A pleasant stay made the better by the friendly owners.
