We so enjoyed the experience of staying in an old cottage in a quaint french village. We flew in to Paris, rented a car and found we could visit markets, wineries and the many historic sites while enjoying the beautiful countryside and then coming home to the gite to relax in front of a fire with our wine and cheese purchases from the day.
So enjoyed walking in the village in the evening. Thank you Karen for providing this beautiful relaxing historic spot. Cindy
Having just returned from a weeks stay at La Poterne I was very surprised to read the previous review.
My wife and I had a wonderful time here and found Karen and Clive ideal hosts with their daughter,Joanna, showing her prowess as a Manga artist.
We did not find the dining room gloomy especially with the candles lit and a nice bottle of Chablis on the table.
It was nice to find that the shower did not run out of hot water after one and a half showers which meant that the both of us could individually enjoy a hot shower which is not always been the case in other properties we have rented.
There is plenty to see and do locally ie. Chablis, various chateau , Noyers, etc so either plan your excursions before you go or make them up when you arrive using the large supply of information that Karen has provided in the gite. The tourist office in Ancy le Franc is also a useful source of advice.
All in all a wonderful experience and would be back tomorrow if possible.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review our property as I have said before the one thing we wish for is that our clients get the spirit of our family, gite, village and Burgundy
Although Karen and Clive were lovely hosts, the property was a disappointment. Very dark, and poorly lit. if it was too cold to eat outside the only option was the "dining room" with no windows...very dark and musty.
The bathroom was not very clean, dust and dirt around the shower console and below the sink. The toothpaste/toothbrush holder looked like it had never been cleaned. The iron fell to pieces. Although to her credit Karen did supply us with another one. Stigny is a little too far from the major towns, with few options for dining out.
We have to say we are totally and completely lost for words with this review we now surprisingly have had our first bad review in 10 years.
We do take reviews quite personally and very seriously, as we love our gite La Poterne, our village and Burgundy..
It is our livelihood and have to say take great pride in it also should say lived in it in the middle of Winter while awaiting furniture to arrive from Australia.
Lighting and cleanliness well one needs to be a little bit objective. We have not had complaints so far. The cottage is 200 years old, but has a modern conveniences like hydro shower with lovely hot water, dishwasher and washing machine while retaining those wonderful character features like old wood fire oven, stone sink, featured beams, stone walls and open burning fire.
On the subject of toothbrush holders (in the world I imagine probably many are overlooked) but shall certainly check and improve for the future so thank you for bringing it to my attention.
As for the iron, appliances do break occasionally and we are not always informed however as we supplied a replacement iron immediately totally baffled why it even had to be mentioned.
The lovely sunken dining room (salle a manger) with a small window to the garden has been very popular with past guests who found it charming with ambiant lighting on the walls, electric heating if needed and for a lovely romantic meal light the candles which are provided. Of course if you personally find it "dim" we have many moveable spotlights and lamps that you can move around to suit you lighting preference. You can also if you so wish eat upstairs in the cosy lounge in front of a roaring fire as it has a small table and large window overlooking the private garden.
On the subject of local restaurants if you had taken the time to look at our information in the dining room there are no less than 10 good restaurants located within 30 mins drive of Stigny .
So sorry our gite was not what you expected and truly disappointed that you did not get the spirit of our family, gite, village and Burgundy you have truly missed out on something special
We enjoyed our stay at La Poterne very much. It was very quiet and relaxing. It is conveniently located for visiting the various chateaus and also for the Burgundy canal. We took our bicycles and found the country roads very quient and perfect for cycling. The canal path is only 4 k's from the gite. We recommend the market at Chablis. Our hosts were very helpful and welcoming.
