“Really great place to unwind”
Reviewed 18 January 2014

The pool is open, it's warm 27 degrees even in winter heated from the solar panels.
After a long trek this is a great place to relax. The staff are helpful, you get a tour of the house and one of the garden when you arrive and the sheep are just grazing the grass. The rooms are nice and I had the quietest night on Madeira!

A superb B&B in a wonderful position. Clean and comfortable room, wonderful breakfast and complementary tea coffee and treats at any time. The honesty bar worked very well.
A lovely unspoilt part of Madeira 2 kl from the seaside village of Sao Vincente with many good restruants. The views from the gardens are magnificent but a car is a must (free parking). An added bonus was the indoor swimming pool. A wonderful 5 night stay.

Up a steep mountain road with a magnificent view of surrounding peaks, this B&B type converted house, beautifully restored with modern amenities, was our favorite 2 night stay. The gracious owner/host was accommodating, helpful and laid a sumptuous continental, buffet breakfast even though we were the only guests those mornings. The room was comfortable, the grounds interesting to explore with flora identified with tags, the views outstanding, and a beautiful indoor pool area. Complimentary tea, coffee and sweet treats always were available. Truly a special place in a gorgeous setting.

We really enjoyed our weeks stay in this terrific hotel. The staff were exceptionally helpful, the breakfast amazing and the pool a delight. Situated on the outskirts of a very small village it is perfect for exploring the levadas and paths in the area. A car is a must, but that said, perfect in every way for us at least.

We stayed at the Solar da Bica for a week in early October 2012. The B&B was a good base for touring the island, located in a small and quiet village. The bedroom was simply furnished, but adequate, as was the bathroom (hairdryer provided). There is a flat screen TV in the room, but we could find hardly any English channels. Glad we took our laptop and some DVDs as we spent most evenings watching a film after returning from dinner in Sao Vincente. There is a computer with free internet access, but no wi-fi in the bedrooms.

The breakfast each morning was a very nicely presented selection of freshly baked breads, cereal, tea, coffee, fruit juice along with a selection of cold meats, cheese and fruits.

The gardens at the Solar da Bica were perfect for lazing in after a day out walking, the views were lovely. I'd recommend staying here if you are looking for a low key relaxing holiday away from the busy capital.

2 nights in this B&B..we didnt know that we'd booked in the weekend of Lameiros annual traditional party, and the main street was crowded of locals from the morning till late late night. We expected a really quiet place, but we've not been so disturbed by the noise. The only thing is that we could use the car from 7 pm till the morning after! Really typical atmosphere :)))
Anyway, clean room, not so big. They properly assigned a very quiet one, far from the street. Lovely garden with plenty of flowers, vegetables and fruits. Beautiful and clean pool...very comfortable place and the breakfast was pretty good. Compared to other rates in the area, the room price was a bit too high.

My partner and I have just returned from a fantastic one week stay at the Solar Da Bica hotel. This is a highly recommended place to stay if you are looking for a peaceful relaxing time in very attractive surroundings. The hotel manager, Ferdinanda and her staff were very friendly and hospitable throughout our stay. The hotel was quite small (with about 12 rooms) but this contributed to the relaxed, friendly and personable atmosphere. Our room was of a very satisfactory size with a large en-suite shower room. Room comfort and cleanliness was of a very high standard. There was a large comfortable lounge in the basement which included a very practical “help yourself bar”. This allowed you to make your own teas and coffees and drink them in the garden at any time of day. Internet facilities were provided by a free to access walk-up PC and complementary WIFI, although the latter only covered the area around reception. A very satisfactory continental breakfast was served each morning and included freshly prepared cakes – clearly a tradition of the owner! The swimming pool was excellent and had plenty of sun loungers around it. There was a very pleasant hotel garden with fantastic views of the green and lush mountains. The hotel itself was around 2 miles inland from the coast at Sao Vicente and was around an hour’s drive from Funchal airport. The location provided an excellent base for exploring the north coast of the island and we found an abundance of activities to do in the area including visits to local caves, levada (mountain water channels) walks and a theme park. We were able to find a very satisfactory range of restaurants on the sea-front all of which offered good value for money (main dishes from €6 to €15 euros). Please be aware - the restaurants were very generous with their portions! In summary we had a tremendous stay and would not hesitate in recommending this hotel. However we would strongly advise that a hire car is an absolute must for this area as access via public transport would be very time consuming and cumbersome. Madeira is a fantastic island and there is so much to do and see there.

Room Tip: Some rooms have twin beds in them. If you want a double bed then ensure you check.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Solar da Bica is a cosy and quiet rural tourism unit, nestled at the magic and idyllic Sao Vicente valley, in the Madeira Island. Located in an area with one unique view over the valley, it offers unforgettable landscapes through the breathtaking scenario of the mountains, including the exuberant vegetation of the Laurissilva Forest and the deep blue Ocean. It's the perfect location for those who search authenticity, rest, peace of mind, contact with nature, a calm and unpolluted environment and cultural heritage and integration in a traditional and rural life style. The property results from the reconstruction, adaptation and preservation of the traditional typology of two century-old houses, constituted by 13 rooms. The main house is the typical "Solar", traditionally associated to the residence of noble families, with characteristics of a manor house but with a smaller dimension. In terms of cultural heritage, it presents a great number of interesting and unique elements, such as the kitchen and some antique furniture. At the secondary house, the wine press, traditional floor and ceiling preservation stands out. At the green spaces you can also find numerous stonework and metal pieces that were part of the ancient Madeira's daily routine. Although it preserves many of the original elements, Solar da Bica was adapted with modern infrastructures, of which are worth mention the indoor heated swimming pool, the sauna, the panoramic garden and the biological vegetable-garden. ... more   less
