Would not stay there again. Not a good value for the money in our opinion. Con Dao is great because it's not yet touristy, but it seems the hotels have not figured out how to implement standards of cleanliness or hospitality yet. We paid about $45/night and this is a $20/night hotel room. Sorry, but the ocean view doesn't make up for cleanliness, and the Asian-style shower-over-the-toilet is not worth $45/night.
When we arrived, our bathroom was not clean. The countertop and mirror had "stuff" all over them (had not been wiped down) and the toilet seat had sprinkles of liquid all over it. Throughout our stay we concluded that cleaning the bathroom probably consists of spraying everything down with water, and that's it. They didn't clean the toilet once during our 5 day stay, nor clean the sheets. When we asked for cleaning supplies upon check in, they apologized and asked if we could wait for morning. I declined, and asked again for some cleaning supplies so I could sanitize it myself, and then they called the cleaning crew and they cleaned right away. They did sweep the floor, make the bed, and supply new towels each day. Only once did we get funky towels with brown smudges on them that smelled like mildew.
There was also an issue where a horrible smell (probably sewer gas) would come out of the drain in the bathroom from time to time.
The bed was comfortable, but the bottom sheet didn't fit the mattress (no top sheet), so each morning you would wake up sleeping directly on the mattress because the bottom sheet won't stay tucked in.
I'm not sure you will find different standards for cleanliness at the other hotels, unfortunately. We wanted to move, and went down to another resort down the road, and as we were waiting to talk to reception, another guest was yelling at them for never cleaning the room. So we sighed and decided to put up with what we'd got.
We asked about renting a scooter to go explore the island, and we accepted the scooter rental at around 11 am. We asked if it was full of gas, and he said no, we have to go get gas. It was totally empty. We went to the petrol station and learned that the entire island is on siesta from 11am-2pm. We went back to the hotel and he said, yeah, you'll have to wait. Hmmm, that would have been nice to know before you let us drive off to explore the island??? Anyway, we gave the scooter back and promptly walked over to the dive shop, Dive! Dive! Dive! and rented a scooter with a full tank of gas, and went about our day.
The pros: The coffee was good. The location is great, close to town, and it's nice to sit on your little porch and watch the water. Although, they don't seem to have enough tables and chairs for everyone, and someone stole our table the last day. They found us a new one. The cleaning staff was very sweet. We felt safe there. The beach is gorgeous, although I'm not sure I'd swim there with all those boats parked right offshore, considering the boat bathroom situation. Drinking and playing cards on the porch was definitely the best part about this place. Beware of mosquitoes and sandflies.
