“Spectacular path clinging to the side of a mountain”

You really will need your own transport to get to this walk. Leaving Sion, you drive along small country lanes heading up the hills to the Route Forestiere, then leave the car at a grassy car park. From then on the path is signposted. First, it follows a shady path upwards and then turns left to join the man-made canal, which burbles happily along the slopes. The first 30 mins is a gentle uphill stroll, following the path of the irrigation canal in wooded forests. You then come out to the Chapel Ste-Marguerite, and the path takes a sharp right turn and travels up the valley of the Forest de la Combe. The views from this path are quite spectacular, with a sheer drop down to the left of the wooden path, which is often suspended from the face of the mountain side. We only completed about 75% of the walk, but this was not particularly challenging for the able bodied. The biggest caution is that you need to devote enough time for the walk, as the first (less scenic) part will take at least 30 mins. There was a small cafe at the Chapel, but it was closed during the weekday that we were there. There are tables and chairs here, and I imagine it would be pleasant during the weekends.

So great to walk in the incredible scenary of the Swiss Alps. You will cross pedestrian bridges between mountains. You must not have vertigo... This place is so nice. You must stop at the small restaurant at the start for a drink and enjoy the view.

The Swiss are marvellous at building things on steep slopes, and in this case an irrigation canal around a very steep mountain has one scratching their head at how it was originally managed. But today it has been restored and enhanced, and provides the opportunity for a wonderful walk along the gentle torrent. There are a number of suspension bridges to cross and some narrow paths around the side of the mountain, if heights are a real concern then maybe this is not for you. Otherwise, put on the hiking boots and prepare for an unforgettable experience. Magical views are around every corner so take the camera. A small cafe on the trail caters to hikers, but you wil need half a day to fully enjoy the outing so take water etc. Torrent Neuf is open though summer but closes for winter. Check opening dates at one of the tourist information centres. Not to be missed.
