“Could Not Fault Hotel Anaterve If We Tried !!!”
Reviewed 16 February 2010

We stayed in this beautiful and very interestingly laid out building and garden with fantastic views in January 2009. We enjoyed it so much that we are going to stay there again next week (Feb 2010). We are very much looking forward to it.

As it says in the previous reviews, the owners could not be more helpful, friendly and accomodating if they tried . . . A very pleasant couple indeed. Herman even drove and parked my hire car for me when I was getting a bit nervous about the narrow road and steep slopes just outside the hotel. (I never was a very good driver !)

One point that has not been stressed enough by other reviewers is that all the food served at Hotel Anaterve is 100% top quality and totally vegetarian. They really are excellent cooks ! For veggies like us, this would always be fantastic but it is an exceptionally welcome treat if you are staying on La Gomera for a couple of weeks. There a very few other restaurants on the island where (as non-Spanish speakers) you can easily order a decent vegetarian meal.

Here is a tip that might help you if you are staying at Hotel Anaterve for the first time and arriving in Vallehermoso by car . . . Unless you have a far better satnav than us, you probably will get navigated only as far as the town centre. There is one big free car park in centre of town. The hotel is perched high on the slopes above it.

I suggest that rather than try and find the hotel yourself (which is a bit tricky), give them a call from the car park. They will come out onto their balcolny and get you to flash and switch on your lights. Once they know which car you are in. They will then stay on the phone while they navigate you to the hotel which is about a 8-10 minute slow winding drive away. It worked a treat for us anyway.

Keep up the good work guys !

My friend and I stayed at this hotel and we have to say it is one of the nicest hotels we have ever stayed in in every aspect. The building was beautiful and the owners were two of the most friendly and accommodating people. The breakfast was vegetarian and very DELICIOUS, fresh, and healthy. The ambiance was very relaxing and so was the garden. And the rooms, they were modern and immaculate. Amala and Herman are so sweet and made every attempt to help us with any questions we had about the island and how to get around. I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to La Gomera and I would even suggest adding La Gomera to their itinerary. Don't miss out on this gem!

We (couple + 12 year old son) went to La Gomera for a hiking holiday. We had booked a one week stay directly with Herman.
During our stay we were impressed with the warm and at the same time professional way Amala and Herman run this cosy little hotel.
The appartment we rented was all we needed (and more!), the vegetarian food was excellent, and both Herman and Amanda were extremely helpfull.

La Gomera is a beautiful island, and this hotel added to the pleasure.

Not a big hotel, which is nice, because we got to know the owners very well. The rooms were VERY clean (were cleaned everyday). It's located in Northern La Gomera, which is a little hard to get to if you don't have a car. But if you want to stay in a non-touristy place with lots of hiking trails, this is the place to be! The food is excellent at the hotel (VERY good for vegetarians). We truly felt "at home" here. Would definitely come back again!

The previous reviews are correct - this is a lovely hotel, with a fascinating history. Don't expect luxury, do expect a great experience at a bargain price. You will never find proprietors more friendly and welcoming, and the area is very aptly named (Vallehermoso = beautiful valley). The town is pleasant, with some reasonable restaurants and bars. The hotel overlooks it and the valley beyond and so many rooms - certainly ours - have wonderful views. The rooms are clean and simply but tastefully decorated, and the food is really good. The small dining room is very conducive to friendly conversations with other guests. There's also a small but beautiful garden area, and a shaded table on a terrace overlooking the valley which is delightful when its hot. You can get teas, coffees etc brought out for a very reasonable charge.

If you're a hiker you could easily spend a few days walking, with varying degrees of strenuousness, from the hotel. In addition to climbing up the valley (as described in the previous review) you can also walk down c 4 kms to a small beach - too rough for swimming alas so there is a summer lido. A German artist has restored an old building there and turned it into a small gallery, cafe and occasional performance venue - see www.castillo-del-mar.com. It has a dramatic location on a wave pounded promontory, and beautiful views of the coast, Tenerife and La Palma. We were fortunate to have nice weather and I don't think we've ever been in a more inspiring location. (NB Although the road down from the hotel is fairly quiet, you can bypass part of it by walking on the trail by the barranco that farmers use to access their crops - which are themselves fascinating to see. Never seen avocados growing on trees before! You can also access a neglected but fascinating botanical garden this way.)

Only two very minor downsides - parking as mentioned (we parked down on the main square and could see the car from our room), and some noise from cockerels and dogs which, although some way away, seems to be magnified by an 'echo chamber' effect from the valley walls. Neither should stop you staying here.

Stayed for three nights with my family just before Christmas. Booked direct with Herman who was very helpful during our e-mail exchanges!

The hotel is located above the town of Vallhermoso which is in the mountains in the north of the island (and not in San Sebastian as the trip advisor address suggests). My wife and I had a very large double room with sitting area and large shower room. My daughters had a smaller twin room with small bathroom- both with balconies

Rooms were very nicely decorated with wooden floor/ stipped wood furnishings. TVs were there but the topography means virtually no signal. But who needs TV with views like this- they really are stunning!

There are some fantastic walks on La Gomera several of which start at the hotel. We climbed Roco Cano which is a 10 km circular route and a handy restuarant half way through- quite a climb but the scenary is spectacular.

Herman and Amala are charming- very friendly and nothing too much trouble. They have restored the hotel themselves from a wreck and have done a great job. Amala serves vegetarian food in the small restuarant but do let them know in advance if you want to eat- all very tasty even for a carnivore family like us.

Gripes are few. The main downside was the lack of hot water- seems to run out after one long or two short showers. The hotel was also quite cool (although we did have a couple of chilly days) and Amala swapped us to thicker duvets to compensate without being asked. I'm sure with better weather this wouldnt be an issue and heating is available at extra cost. Parking is also limited but we found a space up the hill.

Overall, a lovely hotel owned by two very friendly and thoughtful hosts.

The review by Treehug says it all. A wonderful hotel run by two of the
most helpful people that I have met in a long time. Excellent accommodation with spotlessly clean, well-furnished rooms.

Excellent food (vegetarian). Evening meals available 5 nights a week.
Reasonable prices (bottle of good wine 7 euros). Herman advised on travel to Gomera, even supplying bus numbers and timetables for bus and ferries. He booked a car for us, which was waiting at the harbour.
We are beekeepers, so wanted to meet beekeepers in Gomera if possible.
Amala and Herman buy their wine from a beekeeper who has a vineyard nearby, so they took us to meet him and spent about an hour translating for us.

Needed bottled water - Amala said, 'help yourself from the filter in the kitchen'. Just like being at home. See their website for photographs - they show exactly what you will find when you get there.
It would be difficult to find anywhere better.
