We have just arrived back at home and just can't get the island retreat out of our heads.its not just the paradise that makes your time, but its the people you share it with.We were so inspired by those we encountered, from every background you can imagine and being there in the islands without any contact with the outside world makes table conversation special.there was a magic that exists that brings the best out of everybody and from the staff and the travellers; we have been left with forever memories.if you don,t believe in magic, then the island retreat will change that;just ask marley and the kids.....not jez ha ha!

My girlfriend and I stayed at Island Retreat in early May 2014. We felt that it was the best accommodation in Bomba and although slightly higher in price, it was well worth paying the difference. The rooms are spacious and very clean with a number having a clear view of the sea and the beach and of course a hammock to waste the day away!

Regarding Jacques comment, I feel that's a little uncalled for. There are four dogs on the site and a number of cats but no more than you would see on other resorts in the area or Sulawesi as a whole.

The resort has a good reef just at the end of the jetty for snorkeling and there are lots of trips which can be arranged to other reefs in the area. The food is excellent, a good mix of western and Indonesian options with some excellent fish too. We received a great service from all members of staff with manager and the owner being particularly helpful.

Overall a great stay and would happy recommend it to anyone who wanted to stay in Bomba.

Very nice arranged Resort. The bungalows have bathrooms with
beautiful handmade ceramic mosaic colored in blue and white.
All the staff was very friendly.
Food was excellent indonesian style as well as pasta and pizza.
We had a great time with Jez, Island Retreat's very professional dive master.
All gear for diving was in perfect shape.
The house riff is really excellent, we detected a blue spotted stingray,
a swimming moray, bat fishes and more ...

About 7 dogs and as many cats, some in a very poor condition. Some dogs scratching, stinking as very rarely washed, often howling at night, sometimes fighting.Denied the minimum veterinary cares. At night, some howling, sleeping on the tables of the restaurant, licking the table-clothes. Those animals, hens included roam the kitchen where they have free access and try to steal whatever food they can. In the kitchen:no tiling, no sinks : the washing up is made in basins in set directly on the ground roamed by Sylvie's (the owner) "family". Not to worry if you see a rat swimming in your "mandi". Should she not show a minimum of consideration and respect towards her clients ? All cleanliness efforts are doomed as long as her "family"will have access to these places. I could talk about lack of :cleanliness of the beach, environmental awareness, reception and greeting of the clients, staff training, all these factors justifying the overrating but those are details in comparison to health hazards. All the efforts to offer a clean restaurant and kitchen and consequently safe food are doomed as long as "her family" will have access to these places
If you decide to stay there, do it in full knowledge of these facts. Those are FACTS easily VERIFICABLE. Welcome and enjoy your meals !Zoonosis risks at their best.

we are surprised that Jacques had written such a review, as he had stayed at the retreat for FOUR MONTHS, at over 50% discount because we had sympathy for him, an older, lone traveler. his review, we are sure, may have been motivated by other factors (perhaps personal) which he was "driven" to write. this year, one year after his stay, a former employee had met him. Jacques had regretted his action (he claimed "a friend" had written it) and he had said that he had traveled to the philippines and other places in southeast asia, and Island Retreat was his best experience, and had he desire to return. my former employee had advised against it (we would not have accepted him).

I think you may be paying for the location.

Food was good, but pancakes and bread heavy and salty. Needs to be a option to buy other stuff, crisps/chocolate besides just fizzy drinks. But was given pizza and pasta which is a change from Indonesian food.

Also quite far from jelly fish lake and bomber dive wreck. So think about going to Kadidiri before Bomba.

Also rooms have no fans, there is no sea breeze. Unfortunately there we're rats which kept us up at night so no sleeping. Also bathroom is western toilet with mandi wash basin.

Staff also need to speak better english. Although staff we're very friendly.

Dive school and Jez however we're really great, would recommend this.

Great beach and snorkelling off jetty.

I spend here 7 nights with my boyfriend for a week of relaxing and enjoying the sun. Unfortunately, the sun didn't shine much. The retreat is lovely and the cottages a bit more basic as expected with only a bucket 'shower' and the room a bit drafty (which you notice when the sun isn't shining all day long)
However, the food makes up all the issues or problems you might have as each meal is a real treat and tastes amazing. The banana pancakes in the morning are to die for and I can't choose which of the other meals were my favorites but home made pasta and pizza springs to mind, grilled fish with fresh salads and the lists goes on.
We spend the days reading from our private balcony in the hammock with the amazing views (even with clouds and rain) or did a day trip with other travelers which is organized by the retreat. Sylvie has an excellent staff who looks after you with a big smile or their face and some of them speak English.
This is a perfect treat if you're looking for a relax time with hopefully some sun.

We did not stayed in Island Retreat (but in the close Puyalisa Cottages) but dived twice with Jez, Island Retreat's dive master. All gear was in perfect shape and Jez had always everything under control so we felt very safe. The dive site (Taupan Island) is also great and we had a very good time. And as a nice unexpected goody we got even a nice movie as Jez took his camera with him. Thanks again!!!
