“Moroccan Jem”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

On a 10 day tour through Morocco, we were lucky enough to stay at this jem for 1 night. Our host Mostapha was warm and welcoming upon our arrival. When showing us to our room I had an unfortunate accident. Through my own in attention, I managed to hit my head and cause a cut about an inch long. Mostapha's genuine care and concern was heartwarming. He attented to the wound and then took my husband and myself on a tour through the grounds. His sense of pride in his place and his country was evident through the tour. A little later, he served a dinner that was bar none the best meal we had in Morocco. During your travels this is the type of person One hopes to meet, someone to make that human connection! His accommodations were lovely. The rooms were very clean and spacious, and shower space was great.

This unique modern kasbah/riad was one of our trip's highlights. The room was spacious and beautifully designed. The food was a real gourmet, both dinner and breakfast, that was prepared just for us (being the only guests at that day...). The staff, who are the also owners of the place, were very friendly, especially Mustapha who shared with us a lot of his knowledge.
We also liked the stork that was trying to nest on one of the towers...
Our main regret was that we couldn't stay longer.

Room Tip: Nicer view from rooms facing the river

After a few hours of relaxed driving from Merzouga, the hotel was easy to find: after Boumalne de Dades take a right on the R704 into the gorge and after 22 kilometer you 'll find a clear sign of the Dar Jnan. You make a u-turn and descend on a pretty steep track for 100 meters and you can park in front of the Dar Jnan. It is beautifully built in kasbah style.

Check in went smooth with one minor point that during our two days stay we had to move from one room to another. The rooms were large and clean with nice big beds although both were a little bit too dark for our taste. We didn't mind that there was no television but we did miss WiFi.

Breakfast and dinner are included in the rate. Dinner was absolutely the best and most refined we had on our entire trip. Beautiful food, nice presentation and excellent taste. Service was also very good and personal. Breakfast in comparison was a lot simpler especially compared to the high standards set by dinner.

We did a four hour hike with a guide (brother of owner Mostapha) which was great: we got a good view of the beautiful mountain area and during the hike there were little surprises like dates and fresh figs. Take good shoes. It was well worth the Dirham 300.

In the afternoon we continued with our rental car through the gorge which was gave a good impression of the beauty of the area.

We can really recommend the Dar Jnan Tiouora, especially for its truly amazing dinner and great service.

Very friendly and welcoming staff. The family business is run by a whole generation of 11 siblings.

We spent 4 nights here and there was time and room for both relaxing and hiking. Some of the brothers are available as guides and you can get the most delightful sandwiches for your day trips. Dinner was excellent as well.

We spent three delightful days at Dar Jnan Tiouira in October this year, and now just want to go back. Fruit of the vision and 10-year building effort of Mostapha Hamdoui and his family, this kasbah is built in traditional style with personal ingenuity in the beautiful Dades Gorge area. The rooms are decorated with taste and the terrasses offer a stunning view of the green valley and the surrounding mountains. The heart of the kasbah is an inner courtyard where the most delicious food is served to the lucky guests and many friendly conversations take place with the Hamdaoui brothers and sisters.
It is truly a place to be happy and relax.
What made it unforgettable for us were, however, our hosts:
- Mostapha who spoke with passion about the creation of Djnan Tiouira, the hammam he is planning to add, the tours he organises and the attraction of walking in the desert and in the mountains,
- Abdullah, who looked after us in the Kasbah and guided our treks through the surrounding valley, mountains and gorges, generously sharing information on Berber culture and his passion for the Atlas,
- their brother whose name we unfortunately don't remember (next reviewer please find out and mention him, he merits it!) and whose passion for cooking produces the most wonderful results! A real creative food artist using only the freshest products, always beautifully presented,
- their sisters who also work in the kitchen, with a high standard of quality, much warmth and beautiful smiles.
Our warm thanks and best wishes to all.

Travellers don't hesitate, go and stay.

A most special hotel in the Dades Gorge. The kasbah styled hotel was beautifully built by the owner, and the love and passion he has for the region is evident in the decor, in all the small details. The hospitality was so warm. We had the most delicious dinner prepared with local ingredients--and it was a welcome change from the tajine we had during the 2 weeks of our travel. The table was beautifully set with rose petals. The breakfast was equally outstanding, with home made jams and crepes. The owner is a certified mountain guide, and took us for a walk in the fields surrounding the hotel. We tasted all types of delicious figs, peaches, right off the trees. You can also sit on the rooftop terrace and look at the stars. I've never seen the Milky Way so clearly and so bright. It was magical.

Sometimes, few words are able to describe a place just prefectly. In the case of the Dar Jnan Tiouira it is simply a place of miracles.

Starting with the individually designed rooms (named after the siblings of the host) to the absolutely fantastic food (most exceptional food during our two week trip in Marocco) there are absolutely no flaws to be found. The passion and the heart-felt efforts of the hosts can be felt throughout the whole house and in every detail of the stay. We have never experienced such friendly and welcoming hospitality and I would recommend the place already just for this fact alone.

Upon our arrival we were greeted with the typical cup of mint tea and then were offered a private tour through the gardens of the village while tasting delicious figues (directly from the trees) along the way. Not only could we learn much about the local agriculture but we truly felt welcome and "at a home away from home".

That being said we certainly hope to come back and recommend this house to everyone travelling through the region without any reservations. It is simply miraculous!

We wish the hosts all the best for the future!
