We stayed at the hotel in Jan 09 and were chuffed with near enough everything. To keep it simple, I will do bullet points:

GOOD:
Great Location - literally 2 min walk from shops, bars, restaurants, ice rink. Also 30 second walk from the bus stop for the slopes (5 min bus journey). THE BUS STOP IS THE 1st STOP OF 3 SO YOU ARE ALMOST GUARENTEED A PLACE ON THE BUS. The bus will drive past other stops if they are nearly full, so being located near to stop 1 means no long waits for buses!

Great Condition - the hotel is only a couple of years old, so the condition of everything is lovely. It looks great everywhere. We compared to Perelik and even hotel Pamporovo and the condition beats them hands down

Bedroom - Lovely, spacious room. Loads of cupboard space. Gorgeous bathroom (with speaker in bathroom playing whatever is on the TV...nice touch. Great views on balcony of mountains. Beds were V comfy (had to push 2 singles together though). Big bonus - complimentary safe in room. Didnt have to pay deposit to use it and brand new electronic keypad style, so dont have to lug key around with you! (also complimentary robes to use whikle staying...nice touch)

Food - Couldnt knock it. Bulgaria like to serve luke-warm, but the heat was fine. There was even a microwave for those who wanted it hotter. Breakfast choice was repititive (bacon, sausage, cereal, eggs, toast) but what do you expect at breakfast...you eat the same thing every morning at home!
Tea was fine. Great choice - steak, chicken, soup, moussaka, veg, chips etc etc. Could not fault it!. Reasonable prices for drinks with evening meal too.

Spa Centre - V V nice (think posh hotel as supposed to local swimming baths). The spa pool was cold but dont think any hotel has heated pool. Lovely sauna and steam room. Great views of the mountains.

Piano bar - up on the 6th floor. Not many people visit it and clear from cigeratte smoke. Good prices and nice to chill out in

Reception - Happy to look after your passports etc. Little goody bag of basic food on arrival

BAD POINTS
Staff - Not the happiest. Not sure if it is bulgarian way of work, but rarely saw a smile.

Well, thats it. If you have read this far, I would go and book to stay here. We had tours of Hotel Murgavets and Hotel Pamporovo and neither matched the quality of this. We talked to guests at the other 2 hotels and the all preferred our hotel. It is worth the extra £50 to stay here. Not just for the 5* (which it is) but for the location. (Hotel Pamporovo is on bus stop 3 so V hard to get a ski bus!), food (friends at other hotels winged about their food) BOOK THIS HOTEL...YOU WILL REGRET IF YOU GO FOR THE CHEAPER OPTION!!

I visited Pamporovo during the last week in March, as the final, slushy whisps of snow hung onto the mud and grass slopes for dear life. The Orlovets was a welcome site after several hours on the bus from Sofia. The hotel is quite central in Pamporovo, but it's a small place, so getting around is not a problem. I had a 4th floor room, with an amazing view down the valley. It was clean, warm, and decorated in the common dark wood/red/cream combo of many posh european chain hotels. The furnishings were quite new, and the bathroom spotless and all working - no shortage of hot water or towels, and cleaned daily.

Breakfast was a good variety of cold meat and cheese, OK selection of bread, some dodgy-looking scrambled eggs and bacon and some little cakes/pre-packed croissants. It was all buffet, so you can get a hearty feed before heading out to the snow. The staff were efficient at clearing up and bring more food out, if a little sullen. Dinner was also a buffet, usually two meat mains, a pasta dish, lots of veggies and salad, and a soup. Bar prices were reasonable (the whole of the touristic side of Bulgaria seems to be taking the p___ a bit concerning prices, they just make them up...). The food wasn't ultra-hot, but it certainly wasn't luke-warm as reported in other reviews. If i'd had a hectic day on the slopes, then I imagine I would rave a bit more about the food - it's amazing how an appetite affects your perception. Anyhow, onto more general comments;

The hotel has a pool, gym and internet room. The gym was newly equipped and very good. I didn't try the pool, but it was too small to swim properly in. Pleasant for a soak and lounge about though, and looked clean and well kept. The internet room had two or three machines inside, and seemed also to be the hotel office - I asked to use it twice, but it seemed too much of an inconvenience to the people inside.

The receptionist was friendly, and gave me all the information I asked for, but did no-one there went out of their way to help or provide a service. You had to ask for most things. I'll comment more on Bulgaria and my theories about tourism there elsewhere on this site, but my main advice is that this is the Balkans. People tend to be surly, sometimes seem like throwbacks to communist times, and are still learning the art of customer service. If you go looking for the standards of excellence now commonplace in Western European hospitality industry, then you will be disappointed. If you go expecting the querks, personalities and stories of Fawlty Towers, and approach Bulgaria in that spirit, then you will enjoy it.

The Orlovetz is warm, has reasonable food and quite a lot of it, clean, efficient, and close to the ski action. If you're with a bunch of people, a partner, or family on holiday, you can make your own fun and it would be a good setting for that. If you are seeking a hotel with character to inspire you or entertain you, then the Orlovetz does not have the spirit for that, so you should look at somewhere smaller.

I walked into the roof-top piano bar one night. Only the me and the (Chinese) pianist were there. She spoke only Chinese and Bulgarian. I spoke English and French. Through a shared vocabulary of about 10 words, we established that I did not play the piano, but had dabbled on church organs. She said she would play something spiritual. I sat down with a cup of mint tea to the tune of 'Barry Norman's Film 2003', watching clumsy-big snowflakes fall on Pamporovo's empty streets. Magic..

Just returned from a week's stay at the Orlovetz and we weren't disappointed with the accommodation at all. The rooms are quite spacious and kept very clean by the maids. The shower in the bathroom is really powerful - just what you need to wake you up before the day ahead on the slopes!

The food in the restaurant was a little boring with virtually the same dishes served for breakfast and dinner every day - also it was never very hot.

This hotel is very quiet compared to the Perelik across the road. This was just fine for us and the Piano Bar on the top floor was really lovely for a quiet drink (weird lighting though!) but if you prefer some lively nightlife then perhaps the Perelik would be more suitable.

All of the staff were very helpful especially on Reception and in the Restaurant. My only complaint would be about the very surley barman in the lobby bar, who, for some reason found it really hard to crack a smile unless you spoke fluent Bulgarian.

I would definately return to the Orlovetz but I have to say that the Bulgarians have not been backwards in increasing their prices this year. We were paying almost double what we paid last year for food and drink both in and away from the hotel.

Just come back From the Orlovetz which was booked through Balkan Holidays.
The hotel looks very good from the outside and is perched on the edge of the mountain at the end of the town, all the rooms face the beautiful mountain.

Good points
very clean and smart.
First stop on the ski bus and second drop off
lovely views from balcony
plenty of staff milling around, with good service at dinner.
Plenty of meat to choose from.
Good breakfast selection.

Bad points
not good for veggies, my girlfiend only had rice and potatoes all week (there are salads too)
The food is traditional lukewarm bulgarian and one day (thursday) was rubbish, the meat is pleniful and warm.
the bedsheets do not fit (very annoying) and i think they only have twin rooms.
The TV only has 2 english channels.
you are not allowed to take drinks into the restaurant.
The Piano bar is interesing (but only once) but is ridiculously hot
The spa is quite small (has loads of treatment rooms though) and the sauna is too cold and the steam room is noisy and burs your feet when it spits out boiling water onto the floor through a pipe.
The staff do not have a very good standard of english.

So all in all, it is the best hotel in Pamporovo but is not great, the Kempinski in Bansko (better resort too) is a much beteer bet but will cost you an extra £150 for a week.
