“Fantastic Holiday”
Reviewed 4 December 2012 via mobile

Some of the negative comments on here are incredible. After 20 years of skiing holidays with all sorts of high quality ski chalet companies, this was one of the best. I went in late Feb with my wife and 2 kids, aged 7 and 9. Ski in / ski out was brilliant... off one of the best runs in the entire La Plagne area... We loved the last run of the day! In the morning you have a short traverse onto the bottom section of the same run onto a nice gentle wide slope to warm the legs before getting the main lift.

The chalet was really nice and very comfortable. The view from the hot tub was stunning with the sun setting on Mont Blanc. Our kids also had a gorgeous view of Mont Blanc. Our hosts (Ian and Sarah) were fantastic. Great food/wine and nothing was too much trouble to them in looking after us and the kids, even with a couple of incredibly pedantic guests that were there the same week as us. They arranged ski hire to be dropped off / collected for us and the kids on various days as the kids only skied 3 individual days. Thanks also to Ian and Sarah for teaching our kids to ski. They loved you both!

Our wee girl was in tears when we were leaving because she'd had such a great time. I'd love to return some day.

Stayed at Ancolies Lodge in March 2012 with 5 friends and had a lovely time. The food was great and our hosts Ian and Sarah made us very welcome. Great atmosphere with the other guests (a party of 12) which meant a really pleasant week of skiing and socialising. The chalet is great for groups and the big lounge was very inviting meaning that we all got to mingle and have a nice glass of wine together after dinner. The big pull though has to be the outdoor hot tub - nothing like kicking back with a beer with your fellow guests after a hard day on the slopes. All in all a fantastic holiday!

Ancolies Lodge is a pleasant enough chalet, on this occasion run by snowchateaux, but the advertisements overplay the reality... The 'ski-in, ski-out' claim is the first truth casualty. The 'ski-out' is an improvised track spanning around 150mtrs of 'off piste' snow, which may or may not be adequate for the transition to the red piste... the return is a similar transition only available after an approx 2km run on the 'mont blanc' blue - steep and narrow for a goodly amount of it's distance - followed by a 1-5km run down the steep red tree-lined 'les coches' run... Not so bad when the snow is good, but any ice is not such good news... The only other return comprises skiing into the car park below the chalet, on the extended mont blanc, and walking around 1 hundred metres and up dozens of steps... there is no alternative ski-out...

Our hosts were charming and helpful, notwithstanding some challenging circumstances, but even they could not make the '10 minute walk' from the nearest shops/restaurants closer than around 15-20 minutes return due to the fact that the '10 minutes' was down a very steep & slippery footpath and the issues were compounded by a very unreliable bus service... The dearth of reasonable quality eateries in Les Coches is also not their fault, but may be a consideration unless you are happy with pizza for dinner on the host's day off...

Overall, the skiing in La Plagne is mixed. There are many blues that ski like greens and reds that ski like blues... I guess that is down to the marketing dept who want as many people as possible, but the lift layout is poor with limited transitions between areas... Substantial queues form in the affected areas and, seemingly, the more lifts in any given area result in the most congestion... This is not, in my opinion, due to the range of choices but rather limited by the lift destinations, resulting in those areas being unavoidable if you wish to ski across the areas advertised...

I realise this review is essentially about the property, but the facilities and advantages claimed are also part of the equation, so I can only caution anyone to consider those in their plans...

Other issues raised during our stay concerned the cost of airport transfers (around €600 for a minibus, even for a couple) which were not co-ordinated by snowchateaux to assist in any potential reduction in cost. Some (including me) were misled by the 'fine dining' advertisements and 'upgrade options' - alternately at particular properties and certain times only... which led to the obvious disappointments, so reading the small print is a must... The chalet is a long way off the road & up some quite steep & difficult steps so if, like me, you have poor knees & use a ski mojo for skiing, it's not ideal for access...

Ancolies lodge was certainly not the worst chalet I have stayed in, but it was far from the best in a number of areas. The main factor against it is the location, too far from anything to be helpful... There is no point in being 500mtrs downhill from the Vanoise Express when you still have to spend 10 minutes walking uphill & steps or take another lift with 3km difficult skiing to get there...

On balance I think I may try Les Arcs in a future visit as the whole area has a better feel, albeit the 'Paradiski' dream is maximised at every available advertising opportunity & only spoiled by the reality... Transitions between areas can be time-consuming and difficult, certain lift areas can take AGES - & I mean 40 minutes or even 2 hours when really busy, to pass through... Even the red runs in Les Arcs, which are great fun, are crossed numerous times by transitional paths, which detract from the experience... Its like the whole area was designed by committee... More British than French, actually...

I recently stayed at Ancolies with a group of 19 friends at the end of the 2010/11 season. we got just about the last of the good snow, which was fantastic. after all day skiing it was great to come home and have a jacuzzi on the deck and a few beers. we had two sets of chalet hosts, and both were really friendly, helpful and easy-going. the catering option was great - food was delicious and it was so nice not having to come home and sort out what to cook for dinner. and having the staff clean up after the 19 of us was priceless. the house was great. really homely and comfotable, plenty of dining and couch seating for us all, and it never felt crowded. overall a really great holiday.

We arrived at Anocolies Lodge to find about 30 steep steps and no help with the luggage. lovely big lounge with TV and computer, 4 sofas and coffee table, all the worst for wear. Hot tub on the balcony broken cover. Plunge pool. Dining area two pine tables, couple of dodgy chairs.
The disappointment where the bedrooms. All very basic some have no wardrobes, small single beds, saggy mattress's. One room only 4ft 6inches and under can stand up in it, curtain over the bathroom entrance, and you can't stand up in there!.nother bedroom on the lounge floor- is really only a single, as you have to climb over the bed to get into the bathroom. Another on the top floor has no wardrobe and very small.
No cooked breakfast unless you pay extra. Wine only with dinner, don't like you having too much as it eats into their budget. Staff both injured snow boarding, so area manager had to come into cook, best cook yet. place needs a very deep clean, we found broken glass under bed, something that looked like dog dirt in another room. big dust balls under another bed. One towel per person a week! some towels for hot tub available..
It's not Luxury, the photo's are not true , furniture moved to create space when taken.
It's worth about #350 per week maximum, if you paid more you have been shafted!!!.

Saw this Chalet on the Riders Republic web site and it looked perfect for us and our friends on their first skiing experience. We had plenty of help and advice from Jo (the owner) before we went, she arranged our transfer from Chambrey Airport to Les Coches and back. Sorted the lift passes and ski hire so it was all ready when we arrived.

The Chalet was situated right next to the slopes, although a small walk (3 mins) each moring to the nearest run which was a Red, but another 3 minutes and you could walk over to a Blue to get down to the main meeting area each morning. Although, there was a mini bus that would take you down to the bottom each morning if required. The steps down from the chalet were a bit of a challenge. But we were able to ski back to the front door each night and once the beginners had mastered Red runs they could too.

Perfect location, as Les Coches is only a small resort there was easy access to La Plagne and Les Arcs. Lifts were well run and linked up well and in January NO Queues.

There was plenty of room for all 17 of us, 10 adults and 7 kids - large dinning area, lounge with comfortable seating, all the bedrooms were ensuite and a large boot room. The hot tub was great after a hard days skiing - although we could only use it between 5pm - 8pm when the Chalet hosts were there. A little disapointing as a couple of ladies who didn't ski would have liked to use it during the day.

We were really well looked after by our Chalet hosts Abi and Ash, the food was fantastic, the beer fridge was well stocked and the wine was never ending ;-)

With regards to ski hire, if you can, go for the option to get them to come to the chalet to fit you, it was brilliant, the guys couldn't do enough for us and must have come back nearly every day to change boots or skis, with no problem at all. Thanks Guys.

We don't tend to go back to the same place twice, but would deinately consider Ancolies again. Jo, if you ever move on to Italy let us know! Thank you Riders Republic for the great all round service.
