“Great Service & Hospitality”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 February 2013

I've been to Niseko a few times for snowboard trips but Pension Fuu is one of the best places I've stayed in terms of service, hospitality and flexibility. Miwa-san collected me at the bus stop, ferried me to and fro from the ski slopes every day and night, happily swapped the Japanese breakfast for a European one and helped my mate make alternative travel arrangements.

The room was warm, tidy and far better than many of the hotels in Niseko right on the ski slopes.

Thank you Miwa-san!

Room Tip: Rooms on the South have a superb view of Mount Yotei

This place is severely underrated! It is clean, warm, comfortable, and you have the pleasure of Miya, the Japanese host, helping you out continuously. He is such a nice guy, and will chauffer you to and from the slopes as you require. His English is limited, but he gives it a red hot go! He and his elderly mother cook breakfast and dinner as you require, all of which were great. There is generally a rotating Japanese then Western breakfast on alternate mornings.

Fuu is in South Hirafu, which is slightly out of the main Hirafu area (an easy 10 minute walk away). This might be a bit inconvenient for families, but for anyone who doesn't mind a walk home (assuming you feel guilty asking Miya to pick you up all the time!), then it is substantially cheaper than a lot of the mega alpine resorts and new apartments which have cluttered the main village in recent years. Irrespectively, Hirafu is such a small place that a 10 minute walk down a flat road is nothing! Also, there is a stunning view of the mountain from the rear of the pension - a view you wouldn't get in the clutter of Hirafu proper.

Fuu has a vending machine, beer on tap, and a microwave and hot water machine so you can bring food and drinks back and eat comfortably. The pension is more of a quiet place than providing for an apres ski experience, but if you have skiied or boarded enough during the day, you only want to rest at night! There is a cool bar in a yurt about 10 metres from the front door if you get really thirsty!

Myself and 3 friends stayed for 10 nights while we were snowboarding in Niseko.

Room: The room was a quad room with two bunks. Smallish beds, but extraordinarily clean. Room had a TV with tonnes of channels, all in japanese :), a decent size table, couch and was fine for all 4 to relax. Budget accom, but the epitome of budget no frills accomodation.

Facilities: two bathrooms and a pair of toilets, one bathroom with a scary-huge Japanese bath/spa/pool thing that is probably run of the mill! A relatively small snowboard/drying room, that always had enough room for our stuff though. Laundry facilities (charged at 100 yen, nominal). Hot water and microwave available at all times, along with a laptop that you could borrow for internet. High speed wireless internet throughout the whole place.

Location: Located about 10 minutes walk from the main Hirafu Village area (about 9 to one of the lifts) where all the restaurants and clubs were, it was far enough away that we didn't get hammered by noise at 4am in the morning. The Pension is located right next to a Restaurant called the Gentem Cafe, which serves Mongolian food in a traditional Yurt, reasonably priced, awesome food, GREAT location and setting. Try the mandarin liquor!

Service: WOW.. that's the only word for it. we paid next to nothing for the rooms and breakfast, so we weren't expecting a whole lot, but from the time when we got picked up from the coach from Sapporo (which they arranged for us) to the time they dropped us off it was one of the best service experiences I have ever had. We got asked each night when we wanted breakfast, and it was ready, laid out on the tables bang on the dot. We then got driven by mini-bus up to the slopes whenever we were ready, and asked when they should pick us up when we were done. Ditto if we wanted to go out for dinner. Basically whenever we needed to go somewhere in town between 7:30am and 9:30 pm we had our own shuttle.... just made the trip a dream.

Coupled with that, we had 4 to a room, including 1 girl, and two days into the trip the owner came and spoke to her and said that they had a spare room and asked if she wanted to have it for the next week, because noone else had booked it. free of charge. I can't rave enough about how pleasant and friendly they were, it was like staying with family :)

The nightlife, snowboarding, food, etc. of Niseko has been written about enough. If you want a fantastic powder holiday in a poster perfect snow town, its your place.
