“Convenient location, backpacker style accommodation”
Reviewed 4 February 2014 via mobile

We stayed four nights here in January and the location is fantastic - very close to the main intersection in Niseko Hirafu. Only a five minute flat walk to the Family chair lift so very convenient for getting on the slopes quickly and central for all the restaurants and bars.

Room was a good size, unfortunately the mattresses on the single beds were pretty uncomfortable which isnt great when we were sore after skiing. Room could do with some more places to hang up towels etc. Shared bathrooms were perfectly adequate.

Drying room was effective for storing boots etc and great to have access to washing machine and drier. Great to have wifi and also communal computer was available too.

Included breakfast was simple and exactly what you need before a day on the slopes - cereal, toast and eggs/bacon.

It was a bit random in terms of being able to tell who was working there on any particular day and I felt that it could be a little more organised for arrivals and departures etc.

Location and price made up for other quirks and therefore gets 4 stars from us but unless the beds improved I doubt we would stay here again.

Dear AusPhoenix,
your feedback and your ideas on how to improve comfort and the quality of your stay at Australia House are greatly appreciated. We are sorry to hear that the comfort of our beds was not satisfying to you and we will make sure to try to improve the mattresses for future guests. We hope that you were able to enjoy the other opportunities to relax after a long and tiring day on the slopes such as the spacious bath tubs on the bottom floor or the lounge area.
We have welcomed many new staff members since your stay with us and we understand that there may have been situations in which it was confusing to identify the staff member responsible for arrivals and departures. For future seasons, we will try to highlight each staff member's responsibilities more clearly so that it will be easier for guests to address the right person when they are needed. We would love to welcome you at Australia House again in the future when we have carried out these changes.
Once again thank you for your feedback!

It's basically an advanced hostel. Its great for price+location. The room (private double bed) was super comfortable (love those little cocoon beds). Breakfast was simple but great every morning.

Owner (Sunnai?) called two taxi companies at the last minute to help us get a ride to the aiport for a 7am ride. She was awesome.

Wish they had a better storage area on the bottom floor for large luggage.

One thing to note is that there are several narrow staircases to go to your room - pulling snowboard bags up those is less than ideal. Best to unpack your board, set it up, and leave it on the bottom floor before trekking it up.

Dear sfjuggernaut,
we would like to thank you for your feedback on Australia House.
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer large storage areas for guests due to limited space available on the first floor. However, we always do our best to find flexible solutions for guests in case luggage is delivered by mail or needs to be stored temporarily for different reasons. We hope this did not reduce the quality of your stay with us and we would love to welcome you again in the future.
Thank you!

Great location, everything you need is within short walking distance, very nice and helpful staff. The place has a great feel, very chilled. Suits couples, singles and families. Cant fault it.

Going back there next year!!

Myself and a friend stayed at Australia House for 6 nights. The location was excellent, only a short walk to the lift and in the centre of all the restaurants and bars. The room was large compared to other places we had stayed in Japan. Breakfast was really good! The only negative was the toilets and shower which needed to be cleaned more often but other than that we had a great stay!

Dear Tashlou,
thank you very much for your review! We are happy that you enjoyed your stay at Australia House. In order to improve cleanliness in all communal bathrooms and areas as well as in the guest rooms we have changed all cleaners since your stay with us. Moreover, we increased the number so that by now, there are three staff members ensuring a high standard of cleanliness and comfort in both the bedrooms and showers. Once again, thank you for your feedback and we hope to see you again in the future!

I went to Hirafu with my friend this Christmas. We booked about two months before, but the other hotels were either out of rooms or too expensive. Australia House has clean and warm room and ok breakfast. That's true that you have to share bathroom and toilets with other people, but frankly you can't complain too much about it given the price. For me, I just need a decent place for good rest after full day skiing and if I want, I can go out to nearby restaurants to enjoy fantastic Japanese food.

Two suggestion for Scott: (1) the dog there is really cute but maybe you can give him/her some freedom to walk around?... (2) would you consider having some room for single traveller in case I'll go alone next time?

Thank you
Yijun

Hi Yijun,
Thanks very much for your review.
Noticed that you said that Breakfast was just OK, we have cooked and continental breakfast, today a customer suggested that we do order made fresh for the cooked part, we will post what the menu will be for that day and cook fresh for customers from now on. That way the breakfast we will improve from OK to great.

In regards to you 2 questions
(1) the dog there is really cute but maybe you can give him/her some freedom to walk around?...
>> Sunny is her name a Siberian Husky she is 15 yrs old now. She is taken for a walk at least one time a day by us. She does not like to go far anymore, so if customers would like to walk her they can but no more than 300-400 meters due to her age.
>> We have made a custom made insulated house that she used every day last yr but this years prefers to stay in entrance. This we improved and put a heater mat in it so it will about 12c or more in there, cannot be too hot as she despite her age still prefers the cold and will sweat so causing her to get a cold.
>> Thanks for showing concern for her welfare.

(2) would you consider having some room for single traveller in case I'll go alone next time?
>> We regularly make improvements to the building but sorry we cannot make rooms for single travellers due limited space. So you will need to continue to pay more for a room here if on your own as you need to pay for 2 people even if use one bed. Its a short season and we we do not have enough rooms as it is.
Best Regards
Scott

The location is absolutely amazing - walk to the slopes in approximately 2 minutes, Seicomart is right across the road, Big Foot Lodge is just around the corner. Breakfast is included with your stay and they have free wifi too.

We stayed in a twin room. Good heater. On our last night our sheets had come off the bed revealing several large stains over both mattresses in the room. Absolutely disgusting - so thankful we noticed this on our last night.

You share 2 toilets on your level with the other people staying there. Toilets are very clean but the 4 basins were mouldy and unkept. You share a washroom with everyone else staying in the hotel (males and females have their own). There are 2 showers and a bathtub in each so be prepared to shower alongside someone you don't know, and it's quite small so you might have a run in or two with the other person if you know what I mean. So I'd recommend showering with a friend.

Good kitchen facilities however the staff are always in their and are not that friendly - would be nice if they actually spoke to you and made you feel welcome in there. Nice cosy lounge area.

Would not stay here again. But if you're after a great location and don't care about the rest this place is for you.

We are rennovating and adding down comforters/doonas to all our rooms in order to provide our customers with more comfort and a better stay. Clean, simple backpackers with great bedding. Owners Sunny and Scott are friendly, helpful and polite in every way. Simple western breakfast, good wireless. Fabulous location that can't be beat. Definately no frills. Could possibly have some very small amends to make your stay more comfortable, like heated toilet seats & bidet - but as said before, can't beat location & you're never there anyways as you'll be powder skiing! Accom has many stairs so would not suit disabled.
