“Fantastic place! (^_^)/”
Reviewed 19 March 2014

My friend and I stayed at the Australia House for 4 nights during our trip to Hokkaido and it was really great. It's right in the middle of everything. Super close walking distance to the mountain and also to restaurants and bars as well, the bus stop is also right down the road so you don't have to carry luggage far off the bus. We had a really nice upper floor room with two single beds, the room had plenty of space and was very clean. The beds had big built in drawers under them to store all your gear and a big shelf at the head of the bed to put all your other stuff, and most importantly, they were extremely comfortable! The heat worked well in our room too, so we were nice and toasty but not too hot. We found the whole place to be well maintained and very clean, and there is even a laundry machine in the basement which is great to be able to wash all your gear.
Breakfast each morning was just downstairs and they had a bunch of cereals and toast and also offered to make us whatever eggs and bacon or potatoes we wanted, yum! Awesome to head out to the mountain fed and ready to go for the day.
The greatest part was the owners, they were super kind and accommodating during our whole stay. We had a very early train and the owner called 3 different taxi companies to find one to pick us up so early and made the reservation for us! They were also nice enough to let us make arrangements to leave our key and check out early. The only sad part was I forgot a sentimental keepsake in my room and emailed to see if they had found it. They responded right away that they had found it and were so kind enough to ship it back to me!
Overall, this is a great place to stay, I'd recommend it to my friends and we will definitely be back to stay again next year!

My boyfriend and I needed to book 3 nights somewhere in Niseko because our current hotel didn't have any room for us for these 3 days. We picked Australia House because it was very close to the slopes and seemed like a cozy place to stay.

Cozy it is, you can share a big living room with other people and use the big tv whenever you like. The rooms are quite simple but warm and quite clean.
We were staying in a room on the backside of the building (there seem to be 2 sides), sharing one shower, 4 sinks and toilet (female and male toilet separate of course) with our neighbours.

Now, I already spent some time in backpackers hostels in Asia before, and I was happy to spend a few nights in one of these places where usually the staff is quite friendly and very helpful.
BUT: the staff was almost absent of the place most of the time. We came to check in around 9 o'clock in order to go ski as usual but had to leave our luggage unattended in the living room while we went off.
What bothered us the most was that all the ski or snowboard gear was left insecure in the basement area. They do have special racks for your gear, but no lock and the door is open all the time. The dog supposed to guard the door to prevent any thief or unwanted guest is harmless, sleeping and obviously scared of new people.
Having bought new gear on this trip (which involves a lot of money!), we were quite worried about that.

Also, we felt a bit 'alone' in the way that there is no permanent staff available to help you out or just BE THERE. So we didn't feel very secure staying in this place, and were glad our door had a working lock on it.

One more weird thing that happened: we did a laundry and read a sign near the machine saying that we could hang our clothes in the attic if needed. So my boyfriend went upstairs to take a look, and found a Japanese guy that looked a bit confused and answered "ugh, I don't think so" when he asked him if we could hang clothes there… either the hotel has some unregistered guests occupying the attic, or friends… I am not sure but this is not reassuring either.

Australia House does serve breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 including cereals, coffee, milk, juice and a hot breakfast on demand that varies every few days (eggs, sausage, potatoes). The staff serving you is quite nice and friendly, and was pretty much the best staff interaction of our whole stay. Also the shower was working well and delivering hot water.

The other people were mainly backpackers, usually noisy at night with the TV and talking loud, like if they were in their own house. Some of them would just not be very clean and leave the sink full of their facial hair (I think of men of course. hehe).

I would not stay there again, and probably would try the pensions around that might be more supervised and cosier.

Hope this helps!

Cheers

Great location on the main road of town with access to shops and restaurants. The staff were great, very friendly and helpful. Accommodation clean and tidy. Breakfast was basic but did the job before heading onto the mountain.

Location is superb. Breakfast served daily more than adequate. Facilities were clean and all working. It's a B&B so don't think you'll get 5* hotel rooms, which is why i said average, but the beds were very comfortable, and enough room to put all your clothes and kit, and there is also the option to put them in the room down stairs. Heater was superb and the window sill flat enough to keep your beer on to chill it. I had some friends staying in another place so didn't really lounge there but it looks enticing, with TV, internet all available.
The restaurant there in the evening is also great and very reasonably priced, and plenty of take away options over the road as well, made it easy to get a lot of variety.
Everyone I saw and met there was very friendly.
All in all I would recommend this place for a nice very convenient no frills stay. If you've been out on the slopes all day, a comfy bed and good breakfast is all you need really.
Ticked all the boxes for me.

A very good option ... as a clean and functional "base camp" for your skiing in Niseko.

The location is absolutely perfect with close access to several of Grand Hirafu's best restaurants, the Ace family lift (that opens 8:15), Niseko physio (in the basement), the shopping mart across the street, great coffee (Odin's place), Rhythm and Niseko 343 for rentals etc ... and it's still silent (the back building), even if just 100m from the main street crossing.

I arranged a trip for 10 male and experienced powder lovers from Sweden in Feb 2014 and we had the whole 2nd floor (5 rooms with twin beds) in the back building for ourselves. The overall group's verdict; "better then expected", "perfect for skiers", "big value for the bucks".

Great; location, beds, space, temperature control, silence, drying room,
Good; ski storage, breakfast already at 7:30, WiFi access, service mind set (when needed)
Average; size of entry (where you take your boots on), cleanliness, sofa corner (that we actually never used), only 1 shower on the 2nd floor (but we used additional shower in basement plus went to onsen), narrow stairs from 2nd floor to basement (ski storage),
Could be improved; variety and pace of breakfast, limited luggage storage (after checking out)

My contacts with Scott (manager) prior to arriving was based upon fast responses, flexible solutions and securing customer satisfaction. Good job done !

Don't expect immaculate luxury ... it's a "skiers lodge". Clean, functional and great Value for Money ! Could definitely recommend it for skiers focusing on the snow ... and Yes, I'm likely to come back.

Room Tip: We used all 5 twin rooms on the 2nd floor in the back building ... which was great. My comments are...

Dear LarsLeiram,
thank you very much for the detailled review and your many ideas on how to improve the quality of future guests' stays! First of all, we are happy that both you and your group enjoyed their time in Niseko and at Australia House and we will work hard to keep up and even improve this standard in the future. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer larger storage rooms or more spacious staircases to guests due to limited space available in the building. However, we always try to arrange flexible solutions for temporary luggage storage throughout the day of departure or arrival in both the Wabi Sabi restaurant rooms or the drying room downstairs.
We noted your points of criticism and welcomed one more cleaner in the past week which will increase the standard of cleanliness in our facilities. Moreover, we are sorry that the pace of the breakfast did not meet your expectations and we will consult with our cooks and breakfast staff in order to improve efficiency and offer a better start in the days on Niseko's slopes.
Once again, thank you for your valuable input and we would love to show our newest improvements to you during future stays!

You can't do much better for this price. The rooms are nice and comfortable as is the common room. You're right across the street from the convenience store for cheap meals and booze but there are myriad restaurants/bars within a 5 minute walk as well. It's a 5 minute walk to the lift too. You can't do much better for a great Niseko experience.
The hosts are very accommodating as well. I have brought large groups here 2 years in a row and everyone has had a very positive experience and said they would stay at Oz house again if they were to return.

Dear fnezchad,
thank you for your feedback and we are very happy that you and all members of your group enjoyed their stay at Australia House! We will keep up this standard in the future and even improve it, for example by increasing the number of cleaning staff which will ensure that the communal bathrooms as well as the bedrooms stay cleaner and more comfortable. We would be excited to host you and your travel groups again in the future and offer an even better quality of stay.
Thank you for the review!

We stayed four nights here in January and the location is fantastic - very close to the main intersection in Niseko Hirafu. Only a five minute flat walk to the Family chair lift so very convenient for getting on the slopes quickly and central for all the restaurants and bars.

Room was a good size, unfortunately the mattresses on the single beds were pretty uncomfortable which isnt great when we were sore after skiing. Room could do with some more places to hang up towels etc. Shared bathrooms were perfectly adequate.

Drying room was effective for storing boots etc and great to have access to washing machine and drier. Great to have wifi and also communal computer was available too.

Included breakfast was simple and exactly what you need before a day on the slopes - cereal, toast and eggs/bacon.

It was a bit random in terms of being able to tell who was working there on any particular day and I felt that it could be a little more organised for arrivals and departures etc.

Location and price made up for other quirks and therefore gets 4 stars from us but unless the beds improved I doubt we would stay here again.

Dear AusPhoenix,
your feedback and your ideas on how to improve comfort and the quality of your stay at Australia House are greatly appreciated. We are sorry to hear that the comfort of our beds was not satisfying to you and we will make sure to try to improve the mattresses for future guests. We hope that you were able to enjoy the other opportunities to relax after a long and tiring day on the slopes such as the spacious bath tubs on the bottom floor or the lounge area.
We have welcomed many new staff members since your stay with us and we understand that there may have been situations in which it was confusing to identify the staff member responsible for arrivals and departures. For future seasons, we will try to highlight each staff member's responsibilities more clearly so that it will be easier for guests to address the right person when they are needed. We would love to welcome you at Australia House again in the future when we have carried out these changes.
Once again thank you for your feedback!
