Red Elephant Safari Lodge
Ranked #10 of 16 Speciality Lodging in Voi
Reviewed 4 November 2012

Red Elephant Lodge sits next door to Voi Wildlife Lodge, but has far fewer guests and is often empty. Unlike some of the reviewers here, I found that a bonus rather than a turn-off. What is not to like about having a waterhole all to yourself and enjoying the passing elephants, buffalo and waterbuck with no loud distractions from busloads of (mostly Italian) package tourists?

Red Elephant's waterhole is smaller and more natural than the big pond at Voi Wildlife Lodge, but the animals visit both places throughout the day so you don't miss anything. (Note: I stayed during the dry season. Be aware that the animals are thinner on the ground during the rains as they fan out into the bush.) What's more, at Red Elephant you can stand closer to the animals than at the other lodge. There is only an electrified fence and perhaps 50 feet separating you from the waterhole action. Photography is also better here as you can aim your lens between the wires for some authentic safari shots. At Voi Wildlife Lodge you are confined to a large deck and need a good zoom lens to get any worthwhile shots, and the cement-lined waterhole has a definite artificial look.

I camped in my own tent when I was at Red Elephant (800 shillings). The basic but clean rooms start at around 6,000 but I would guess the price is negotiable. There is a large, rather dimly lit lounge area with a bar and restaurant, which you may have all to yourselves, especially on a week night. With so few customers, the restaurant isn't really a la carte, but the very pleasant cook will prepare you a hearty Kenyan meat-and-potato kind of meal if you give a few hours' notice. The 400 shilling breakfast was very generous - not many places have full breakfasts for that price anymore.

It is odd to see two lodges that are side-by-side yet are so different. However, when I stuck my head into Voi Wildlife Lodge and saw how busy and noisy it was, I didn't regret my choice.

Room Tip: All guests have access to the waterhole viewing, but for a higher rate you can stay in one of four...

Stayed there one night and took a safari trip to Tsavo, But one of the most exciting things I enjoyed was our view was spectacular from our room. The red elephants they showed up, they played in the water hole they rolled around and more or less put on a show for us. There was at least 40+ Red Elephants that washed them selves and began to regain there natural color...gray. I say Wilder beast, Gazelles, a stork and a couple other wild life that I couldn't identify, but this was all viewed from my lodge patio sliding doors! The meals were delicious and filling. From the dining area we could also see the elephants and we walked out on the pier and took pictures! The safari itself was awesome, I saw a baby giraffe gallivanting with his Mama, ostriches, wild turkeys, parakeets in the wild, beautiful birds everywhere, monkeys, zebras and camels. returning back to the lodge we saw at least 14 more giraffes, that was the highlight of my evening! It was a great place to stay and wish I could have had at least 2 full days there!I would love to do this again and go to the spa. The appt book was filled so I wasn't able to get a massage, which was what I was looking forward to after the long ride to get there. Thanks for the hospitality and all the personnel that made are stay comfortable. The room was nice and clean and I just loved my bed and mosquito net was a nice accent to our room and protection from the insects that fly around at night. They had complimentary bottled water in the room, soft towels and a nice comfortable shower with a massage head on it! Thank you for such a wonderful stay in Voi at the Red Elephant Safari Lodge!

We stayed at the red elephant for a one night stopover enroute to malindi. The lodge is just before the voi gate and neighbours the more popular Voi wildlife lodge.
To our surprise we were the only guests in the entire lodge. It seemed like a place that does not have many visitors.
Becasue we were the only guests food was quite scarce and was a very limited choice. The rooms were quite big and bathroom was basic but clean.
For what we paid it was not bad value for money. It certainly looks like a lodge with some potential if they market it better.
Ideal for a one night stopover.

Stayed here for one night whilst on a Safari trip to Tsavo East. Basic but really comfortable, authentic lodges .
Our 'Bush house' overlooked a small watering hole-unfortunately we didn't see any elephants there on our stay, but I have seen from the photographs that they do make impromptu appearances, so you may catch them there if your lucky!
The splash style pool was a great place to catch some sun, and take a well needed dip.
Great staff - the bar staff and Lodge Manager were very helpful and friendly. The security man, Micheal was a particular help when a rather large lizard appeared in our room! He came to our rescue and removed the offending chap for us.
There was some interesting evening entertainment - a group of tribes people singing and dancing for us - the Taita tribe I think they were called. It was very interactive, and we got roped into a dance and sing song!
We booked a package trip from a local tour operator in Diani Beach where we stayed for the majority of our holiday, and for the price we paid, would conclude this a great budget lodge from where to base a trip to Tsavo East.
