I do laugh sometimes when I read reviews of hotels I've visited: there seems to be a large number of miserable b*st*rds on this site for whom nothing is ever good enough but, I suppose, if you go in with that curmudgeonly attitude then you're likely to find fault with everything. For the record, I'd just like to say that this is just about the most perfect combination of price and quality of any hotel I've stayed in in recent years. Not quite perfect (I'll come to that in a moment), but pretty damn' good..

I stayed here some years ago when it was first converted into a hotel, but I was unprepared for the improvements which have taken place since. So here goes: lovely building (an old flour mill), spotlessly clean, plants and flowers all over the reception area, excellent restaurant (lechazo the speciality - order in advance) and very pleasant (and cheap) cafeteria (steak egg, chips, salad for about €7). The room was not large but, again, spotless with blond wood flooring and wardrobes, comfortable bed, good-sized work desk (free and very fast wifi) and large bathroom with modern shower and trendy green-glass wash basin. There's a minibar with water, soft drinks and beer and a flat-screen television with seven channels (although none in English).

Best of all, however, are the staff: every single member I met from restaurant to cafeteria, (and bar, I bet, staffed by attractive young gels, by any chance? Ed), room service, reception and cleaning were smart, polite and willing to go the extra mile to provide full-scale service to the guests from (in may case) finding me a quiet corner to meet business associates and taste their wines, and providing free pain-killers when my dodgy joints were playing up.

Which brings me to the only negative aspect of the hotel. There are seven rather steep steps up to the main door, with a wheelchair lift and a rather inaccessible handrail tight against the wall, the latter obscured by the marquee covering the outside terrace of the bar. Worse still, a similar flight of seven steep steps goes down into the cafeteria, and there is no handrail at all. In the summer many of the guests are tourists visiting the local wineries (of which there are many) and generally of 'a certain age'. I watched as some of the guests clutched each other for support when negotiating the steps, and wondered why such an improvement - at minimal cost - could not easily and quickly be made.

Apart from that - and at €60 a night for a single room - I can't imagine staying anywhere better. Indeed, if they fix that handrail problem I may move in permanently.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back don't have much of a view but are quieter

Average 3 star hotel, probably one of the best places in town. Located at a very busy road with traffic all day and night. Rooms rather small. Restaurant is good.
Penafiel has its castle, nothing more. Wineries don't offer many possibilities to visit.

We are on our way down to the South of Spain and needed somewhere to stay. A little off the beaten track but Penafiel is worth a detour for the castle and the wine and this is a good hotel to stay at. The staff are very attentive and the food at the restaurant very good.

The Hotel Ribera Del Duero seems to lack the charm of its surrounding area. It’s old and big, and I got the sense that it had seen its heyday and/or primarily caters to business travelers. The rooms are newly decorated, small and comfortable with decent sized bathrooms. It’s a quick walk from downtown Ribera del Duero.
