“Don't expect a hot shower”
Reviewed 21 October 2010

The hotel is pleasant enough but does not live up to the 3-star rating. It's a 1-star at best. The shower was tepid and did not improve after complaining.

This little place is two places. There's the hotel (not used) and the Pension, where we did stay. The rooms here are just like the Spain we used to know. Everything's OK, but a bit cramped and basic. The lady that runs the place along with multiple family members is a lovely character, very friendly, and quite willing to bargain gently.

We were there when it was fairly empty in town (village) and the only ones eating, aside from a party of (presumably) dedicated Catholic Japanese, who did their eating a bit quickish-like, and went off to bed somewhere nearby. The roast suckling pig was very tasty (sorry, Veggies, but it was). Shame that we overlooked the goat - still, next time perhaps. This is a very good overnight stay, if you like things simple, quite and country, and very Spanish.

The village (which lies well off the beaten track, surrounded by astounding countryside, with its own little but lovely gorge nearby) is packed with Rough Guide quality sights, but what seems to go without mention is that if you step out towards the back of town just 50 metres, you can kind find old stucco houses and barns still being used, and many falling slowly to pieces. Wondrous vernacular architecture that stands up strongly against all that ecclesiastical and monumental stuff that guide books seem insistent upon stuffing down our throats.

We wanted somewhere interesting to stop off on our drive down to the south of Spain and we found this hotel in Alastair Sawday's guide on special places to stay in Spain. It is about a half hour from the A1/E05 south of Burgos and well worth the detour. The small town is beautiful, with cream sandstone buildings, and the hotel delightfu, clean and ideally placed. The rooms are generous, traditional Spanish and at the same time modern. The restaurant in the hotel is good - I had the suckling pig which is a traditional dish, and it was gorgeous. Breakfast is cheap and basic. Very recommended!

One goes to the village to listen to the monks chanting their prayers 7 times a day in the monastery. The hotel is somewhere to stay while you are there. Because the monks are known throughout Spain, the village has 3 or 4 other hotels and each of these has a restaurant. Probably Vespers is the service to go to in order to get the full appreciation of the chanting in Latin.

The hotel is good value for money at 62€. OK the breakfast is the basic coffee, fresh squeezed orange juice and toastada that Spaniards have in the morning, but you are in Spain.

The rooms are fairly basic 3 star, of a reasonable size for the price, and come with a bathroom and spa type bath. The rooms were done fairly recently, so are modern, clean and reasonably well kept. Nothing fancy, but perfectly acceptable at the price.

For dinner you want to try one of their grills. We had the roast kid goat, which is a local specialty/delicacy.

All in all they offer good value for money, and there is nothing one could really fault at the price.

We stayed at the Hotel Santo Domingo de Silos for one night at the beginning of May 2008. We paid 62 euros + 7% VAT for one of the new rooms with 'banera de hidromasaje' (whirlpool bath, not really a proper jacuzzi). The room was spacious, clean and had little personalised details like an old jar and basin for washing face and hands (for decoration only!).

The air conditioned worked when we tried it, which was quite a novelty. That same week we had stayed at other hotels whose management definitely thought they knew better than us about room comfort and had the aircon turned off because it was 'spring and still not too hot'. Let me decide that, please. After all, it is me who is paying. Anyway, here the aircon and heating were on and we were pleased with it.

We also had dinner at the restaurant of the hotel which was all right, breakfast a bit short with only toast, jam, coffee and orange juice. Apart from this, we were very satisfied with the hotel and the friendly welcome from the manager and his lovely, down-to-earth mother, who provided us with accurate information about the Monastery's religious services timetable. We attended "Vespers" service at the Monastery at 7.00pm, which was all in Latin and very atmospheric. We enjoyed the monk's singing very much. Mass at 9.00am in the morning was all right, although there was less singing and all of it in Spanish.

  • Liked — spacious rooms, free parking by the hotel, hotel location in center of town
  • Disliked — breakfast could have been more varied but for 3 euros, it was kind of all right

Family of four stayed at this hotel in a cold winter day. We had the jacuzzi triple bed room which was spacious and had a lot of character. Baby lamb in the hotel restaurant is delicious and their selection of wine is good. Location cannot be improved as it is opposite the monastery. We just had to leave five minutes before each service to hear the monks. Be sure to go to as many services as possible for the music is outstanding. Also worthwhile is a visit to the cloister.

Has a quirky appeal and is well-located bang opposite the monastery wall. Choose one of the more expensive rooms with jacuzzi bath for most character - the new rooms in the extension are cheaper but rather bland and small. Beakfast is basic, but its the best place in the village for dinner.

Don't expect anyone to speak English in the hotel and hardly in the village - this is where the Spanish go. Just get on down to the church for the amazing Gregorian chanting every evening, and take the cloister tour in the day.

Lovely walks in the surrounding hills and local villages to visit. Well worth also making the longer trip south (about an hour) to walk up the gorges and see the giant vultures soaring overhead. Burgos is also well worth visiting.
