“Slow but breezy”
Reviewed 19 September 2008

Just returned from a week stay in the Tropikist Beach Hotel
There was a party of 6 as we were in Tobago for a wedding.....on arrival we got a shock as the place looked like it was falling down and in real need of repair...but check in was easy and we were greeted by very friendly staff and they gave us refreshments......

Rooms are very average and very dark if you leave your curtain closed but fine for what we needed - they were cleaned every day and fresh towels supplied. But dont think our sheets were changed for the whole week...

We had 3 rooms all on ground level and this suited fine as they were onto pool where we spent most of the week......happy with pool area nice breeze every day - had visted another hotel which had no breeze and we were baked (you really need that breeze)

Not bothered by anyone by the pool - another poster said that they were warned against keith - we found him very nice and not one bit pushy and if we didnt want to do anything he never pushed us....we did go to Sunday School with him though and had a great night.....steel band fantastic.

STAFF - found bar staff fine especially Ali and Alice (alice makes the best mango daiquiris) just one thing i think each member of the bar staff make up there own prices.... Restaurant staff leaves a lot to be desired waited one day for an hour and a half for a basic ham and cheese sandwhich - there is tobago time and there really is tobago time.!!!!!.....we were just on a bed and breakfast deal - which suited us - breakfast was very bland except when the omeletts were made, birds are a pain in the ass never leave your food unattended!!!!!!

Only had lunch one day and never dinner - i would advise to go next door to the crown point hotel - food is fantastic and staff are quick and courteous they even ask how would you like your burger done!!!!!! 11 of us had dinner one night there and there was no waiting and the food was great - try the tuna steak lovely.......

Dont go to SYPS - we went in our party of 6 and when one of the girls asked for a table the man behind the counter sighed and threw his eyes up to heaven - he is lucky we didnt leave - food wasnt great anyway just ok.......

If you want a boat trip - try the island girl fantastic day out....lovely lunch and all the drink you can drink - Danny Danielle and Kevin really looked after us....

Overall the tropikist suited us for our needs but would recomend not and all inclusive package...

Our week was a bit of a pain as it was the week XL went bust so we had to book new flights home with Virgin but other than that we had a great time...

Just a little tip regarding the airport - BE PREPARED TO WAIT IN Q FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS....

We visited the Tropikist June/July 2008. The hotel wasn't exactly what we thought it was going to be but never the less we had a good time. We found the manager very helpful, and he seemed to be always trying to improve things (menu's). Ali at the bar was great, helpful, friendly and very funny. We had no problem with any of the staff they were always friendly. If you are ok with them they were ok with you. The room was adequate if a little small. When using the basin in the bathroom, my husband had his backside in the shower. We just got on with our holiday and had a very good 2 weeks. We believe you get what you pay for so in our opinion the hotel was, cheap, cheerful and more than an adequate base.

  • Liked — How hard the staff worked to try to keep us happy
  • Disliked — The room could do with a makeover

Hotel is very nicely positioned, next to sea with good views and very near to Store bay. Hotel was clean with good facilities and ample breakfast.
Swimming pools were good and cleaned everyday.
Would recommend
For eating out both lunchtime and evening try 'SYPS' which is immediately next door, Merle (the owner) does excellent meals at very good prices.

just returned from the tobago me and my partner stoppin at the tropikist hotel reception staff were extremely polite couldnt fault them bar tender ALI was very friendly and polite to us during the time we stayed there. but staff what were workin there didnt see that tourists were actually stayin at the hotel they never wanted to speak in fact some of them were very rude the way they spoke to us. we had on two occasions had no clean towels in the room. the cleaner came to clean the room we were havin a shower at the time and told her to come back in ten minutes she didnt come back till the next day obviously her job didnt mean that much to her. most of the staff workin there want to go on some sort of communication programme! if these problems were sorted it would be a nicer hotel to enjoy your stay there other than that we enjoyed our holiday. enough of me rantin! tobago is a lovely island and i would encourage everyone to visit there.

Well, where to start? I agree that sometimes you get what you pay for. In this case i'm not so sure. We are a down to earth north of England family with 2 boys 11 and 8.
We read all the advice before we went but like most of you, we always judge for ourselves and keep an open mind. The hotel is run down and needs major renovation. Lets start with the rooms. Dirty tiles in the dark depressing bathrooms, leaking, noisy air-con, no safes in the rooms, grey sheets and disgusting pillows. The daily maid service was very poor even when we mentioned it to the manager Mr. Samaroo...The pool has vegetation around it which drops into it and rots overtime. The pool cleaning like most of the maintanance, is only half done so its pretty grim. We found 2 decomposing lizard corpses which had obviously been there a while. Three of us developed ear infections which got better at the beaches and worse when we returned to the Tropikist pool. Our flights were almost compramised. We got bitten to within an inch of our lives by mozzies which seemed to be around the restaurant areas. We saw and heard a knife fight between a female staff member and her partner including a very colourful narative and thrown glasses. The service at the bar came with a tutt and roll of the eyes. The food lacked variety so much so (and I would seriously advise this), we would go room only. But not here. Lunch is from a very small menu which never changes so if like us you are going for 2 weeks you will soon get bored of it. We spoke to lots of people there and all seemed to have negative accounts of their stay. Not one of them said "yes its great here".
If you need excursions they can be reasonable. Dont use Keith, a guy with a dubious reputation and for whom the hotel has tried to remove from the premesis, unsuccessfuly. Use a taxi driver called Gift or his son Wendel. They are great guys and can be contacted via the reception. They dont like people being ripped off and saved us about £50 on one day out compared to this Keith guy. Tobago is like paradise and we've been to a few of the Caribbean Islands. We would love to go back again and again. there are some very expensive hotels but look carefuly and you will find some little gems. We will look at a gesthouse near to Pigeon Point which is one of the most beautiful beaches we've ever been to. Englishmans Bay on the Atlantic side of the island being the other. At the end of the day you pay your money and take your choice. If it were my choice and money- it would never again be spent at the the Tropikist Hotel.

On the exterior, Tropikist seems nice enough, but....................
the room we had was very cramped and uncomfortable and the hotel staff was very unfriendly, one young man in particular. On the whole, Tropikist is a well-laid-out place with lovely views. It is in a fantastic location. I especially loved the secluded jacuzzi. I was highly impressed with the meals (KUDOS to the chefs!!). Honestly speaking, this would be a good choice, except for the poor attitudes of the staff and the small rooms.

My husband and I have just returned from our two-week honeymoon, staying all-inclusive at the Tropikist. I can't fault the location, right on the beach, and the pool is great (if a little crowded sometimes). Our room was fine and cleaned to a high standard daily - in fact, we could have done without the over-enthusiastic maid wanting to clean our room just after 9 most mornings! Our toilet started leaking (twice) but was fixed promptly (twice) - it would have been nice if they'd fixed it properly first time. Great view of beach and pool from balcony. The TV was not working for two or three days but not so much an issue, we don't go on holiday to watch TV, also for a day or so water/electricity was sporadic - but I'm sure that this was not the hotel's fault.

It's close to all the major attractions in the area and most things are walking distance. We booked a few tours that were advertised thru the hotel - all well worth it, try and go on the Island Man's Boat tour and BBQ, Dexter's rum punch is lethal! Also we rented a car for a couple of days very cheaply to see Tobago for ourselves - it's so small you can circle the island in a day. There is plenty of info at the hotel on what to do, where to go etc.

Our major gripe with the hotel was the restaurant staff. While the food was fine, the hotel could have done with having a wider choice. My husband can't stand anything too spicy and one day there were only spicy options on the menu for dinner. Breakfast had plenty of choice but you're going to wait ten minutes for a slice of toast - never seen such slow toasters in my life! Best to go later for breakfast to avoid the scrum - one day there were no seats left when we went earlier and we had to end up sitting at the bar. Do NOT have breakfast there if you have a bird phobia - the breakfast restaurant opens onto the beach and all the birds come in and try and grab any leftovers - don't leave your plates unattended!

Lunch is of the burger/hot dog variety, one day my husband's burger was raw in the middle and after sending it back it took over half an hour to get a replacement - which brings me to the staff. God, they are SLOW. I know that it's Tobago time and the culture is to kick back somewhat but this lot took it to a whole new level! I don't mind people being slow, after all, holidays are all about slowing down a touch, but I DO mind being ignored over and over again by several waitresses that were more interested in chatting to each other than doing their job. I was made to feel uncomfortable for interrupting them to ask for something. I found it very rude of them to serve and take orders from other tables that had been seated way after us. It got to the point where we really didn't want to eat there anymore but we were all-inclusive so it made sense to eat there since we'd paid for it. I think that's why the waitresses think they can get away with their rudeness/slowness - the all-inclusive guests aren't going to go anywhere else. Fellow guests complained and it didn't make any difference whatsoever. Bar staff varied from being as slow and ignorant as the restaurant to being the most pleasant, helpful bartender in the world - and I'm talking about the same person - very inconsistent service!

All in all, would recommend, but not as an all-inclusive option, that way you can tell the restaurant staff where to stuff their attitude and go somewhere where they will be happy to serve you!
