“Another Excellent Holiday”
Reviewed 4 February 2012

My husband and I returned to Coco Reef for the 4th year running arriving Mid January to an extremely warm welcome and cocktail from the Janelle, before being shown to our suite. Some reviewers say the rooms are dated - a bit 1980's, yes some are a little faded, but they are clean and thats what matters to us. Our room overlooked the pool with the beach beyond, and to be honest, we didn't spend too much time in there. To the reviewer who says that he did not have a good nights sleep - we can only say that he must be a really light sleeper - we heard nothing of the "2am pool party" only the cockerel around 5am each morning.

Like another reviewer says "There are so many plus points to this hotel that it is difficult to know where to start". Eric Feniet the General Manager is very visible and can be seen in the hotel day and night. He chats with guests, nothing is too much trouble and he genuinely seems to remember each guest. We stayed "all inclusive" and the food was really good, buffet style breakfast, with eggs cooked to order each morning, Bachanals Beach Bar at lunchtimes with fish, ribs, lamb, chicken, burgers all cooked fresh on the bbq along with salads, vegetables, rice and potatoes. Tamara's a la carte Restaurant in the evening is more formal and the food was always superb, staff are very polite and attentive, it is always piping hot and we have never had a bad meal.

We can both honestly say that all the staff are friendly, approachable and helpful, from the garden and maintenance staff to the managers. We would to thank all the staff for making our holiday special and would particularly like to thank Melissa for looking after us at lunchtimes.

We sometimes read the reviews of disappointed holiday makers and wonder if they were in the same hotel, we can only say that if they had a problem with staff, it must be them with the problem - not the staff. Tobagans are lovely warm friendly people and if you treat them with respect and friendship they respond accordingly.

We will be returning again next January for our 5th visit - can't wait :)

Like many contributors and readers I have travelled extensively and stayed in hotels ranging from £5 a night to over £200 and what I expect is an experience at least commensurate with the cost. Coco Reef fell far short of this expectation in every way except the location. I did not have a good nights sleep in 3 and whilst the hotel cannot be held responsible for noisy and inconsiderate guests (especially those who held a pool party at 2am), they can be held responsible for there being no one on reception (I went and checked and was subsequently told the on-duty person was in the locked office and didn't hear me knocking!) and for poor sound proofing and noisy staff in the mornings. The rooms are tired with broken a/c, patio doors and curtains. Whilst some staff where cheerful and professional I'm afraid some were pretty surly - whilst i don't expect or want obsequious, surely a smile and courtesy are not too much too expect (especially at this price). All in all very disappointing.

After a break of two years we revisited Coco Reef in November/ December 2011. Reception made us feel as if they genuinely remembered us and we were amazed to find that our room had a plaque on the door with our name on it. Apparently they do this on your second visit. Guaranteed to bring a smile to your face and what a brilliant piece of PR! And you can take it with you when you leave.

Some reviewers say the rooms are dated - 1980's. I'm not sure what that means, but they looked fine to me. The view from our balcony was breathtaking and the room was very comfortable. There were minor niggles, a toilet malfunction and a failed light bulb, but these were attended to within a matter of minutes.

The staff were, without exception, friendly and efficient and on at least one occasion showed remarkable self control when faced with a totally uncalled for level of rudeness from one particularly obnoxious guest.

The food was generally good. The breakfast buffet had something to suit all tastes, including eggs cooked to order. The buffet lunch menu, served in the beach restaurant was fine if you wanted something off the grill, but otherwise could be a little dull.

Dinner in the Tamarind restaurant was a slightly formal event. Booking was required and there was a dress code. More casual dining was possible most nights in the beach restaurant. The menus were the same in each case. The basic elements of the menu didn't change much - chicken, beef and fish, but they were served up in a variety of styles and always delicious. The house red wine was very drinkable. The white was ok if you like Chardonnay. Either way your glass would be refilled promptly.

The big attraction for us was the beach area and lagoon in front of the hotel. Although man-made it is a delightful area. It is particularly good for children, lacking the sudden depth change and undertow found on many Caribbean beaches.

One of the great features is the snorkelling, which has to be some of the best shallow-water snorkelling to be found anywhere.Or you can just stand in the water and the fish will come and swim around you. Afterwards it was good to relax on the beach, where there were always enough loungers, or beside the pool, where it was a bit quieter, while the delightful Angela brought the drinks around.

There was entertainment most evenings. Usually a lady singing to a recorded backing or a couple of guys playing steel pans.

Since our first visit here we have been to several other Caribbean Islands and hotels, and we intend to revisit at least one of these which has now taken over as my personal favourite, but if we return to Tobago we would certainly stay at Coco Reef again.

Like many people who have placed a review about this hotel we have stayed in some of the best hotels in the world.
Last summer we stayed in a brand new 5 star Cretan boutique hotel which was chic with beautiful decor but lacked atmosphere, service and most of all good food.
We agree that the decor at the Coco Reef is dated but hotel refurbishments cost millions and do not guarantee a good holiday experience (which we have found to our cost on many occasions).
There are so many plus points to this hotel that it is difficult to know where to start. The driving force is Eric Feniet the highly visible, very hands on General Manager - unlike most people in his position who spend most of their time out of sight. He communicates with most guests and seems to be in the hotel or grounds day and night. Furthermore Mr Feniet is very approachable and WANTS you to enjoy your holiday.
The food is among the best we have ever eaten in any hotel. The reason for the wait is because everything is COOKED TO ORDER and is not buffet style like in most hotels. Buffets are fine if you wish to try a little of everything but the quality of food is never as good as a dish freshly prepared for you. We spoke to many people while we were at the resort and everybody was very complimentary about the standard of food served and in 14 days we never had a bad meal, upset stomach etc, etc which is extremely important.
We also met and were served by some wonderful people at the resort but again it is always worth making an effort to talk to the staff and like all human beings they will respond accordingly. We would like to thank everybody but special thanks go to the two Natasha's (on the front desk), Lennox, Jeremy (barbecue who made us laugh every day), charming Preston, all the young ladies in the restaurant and the wonderful lady in the green floppy hat who served our drinks on the beach - you were all great and made our stay enjoyable.
The atmosphere is great - the Caribbean is hot and everything is relaxed. People cannot run about like they do in the UK because of the heat and the necessity to multi-task as they are normally serving more than one person at a time and we (the guests) have to "chill-out" and not expect everything at breakneck speed.
The rooms are cleaned daily and although we did not visit every other room - our suite was lovely. It is well worth spending a little more money for the additional space.
The hotel grounds are beautiful and the beach area is very safe and clean with plenty of deck chairs for everybody. There is also a small pool area for people who are not bothered about the beach and a toilet near the beach restaurant which is as impeccably clean as the one in the hotel lobby.
Lunch is normally a barbecue at the beach restaurant and again meat is freshly cooked and then you can help yourself to any extras.
Finally this hotel is only 5 minutes away from the airport - a real bonus after a long flight.
All in all a fantastic holiday and we will go back.

Room Tip: Worth paying for a suite.

Having visited Tobago a number of times, we always enjoying back. Its your typical caribbean island that is relaxed, easy going and beautiful. We usually stay at a villa but on this trip we decided that we would stay at Coco Reef.

We were a family of four and travelled with 6 others. The hotel is great for adults and kids. It has its own private beach that is beautiful and full of fish. There are lots equiment to use on the water and there is a beach restaurants that serves a wonderful lunch. The grounds are well kept with flowers and palms. The swimming pool is also not bad.

The rooms are not great and need udpating. The decor is a bit 1980s but they are clean and well kept. However, our A/C broke down nearly every day but they managed to get it fixed.

Room Tip: The suites are pretty good but try to be on the ocean side of the hotel. The views are stunning.

This hotel boasts that it is the best resort in the Caribbean and, as you enter the gardens and drive up to the front lodge, you may believe that it is. Trust me, it is not! The location is spectacular, close to the Bucco Reef and Nylon Pool, and the common areas are most attractive with an "open air" style, and gorgeous views over the private beach, beautifully landscaped with a fabulous canopy of coconut trees draped over the soft white sands. From then on, it's disappointing. The rooms are OK, but certainly not up to the 5 star rating the hotel claims. For the most part, the service was frankly dreadful, with too many of the staff either untrained or plain disinterested, and many were plain unfreindly. The food was also far below the expected quality, with the exception of the buffet breakfast, and the informal lunch menu in the beach bar, which was not bad. The facilities were adequate, with a sunfish, snorkelling equipment and padlles boats, and the dive school on the premesis was first class. With a bit more effort, this could be a fantastic resort, but at the moment, it is overpriced for what it offers, and far below the standard of other resorts I have stayed at elsewhere.

Room Tip: Upgrade sea view

This is a high end hotel, so in Tobago, you are going to pay for it - it was not cheap. However, there is a nice swimming area on the beach and the staff were friendly. Most of all I liked the atmosphere, esp at night. The room was clean and adequate. The restaurant had a good variety of decent food. I have recommended the place to others.
