“Good get-away, but not worth the money”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 April 2014

Overall the trip was good - not great. Having read all the generally negative reviews we still decided to give Coco Reef a try - being locals and all… and this is what we thought:

The Pros:
• Very nice beach; calm, clear, great for kids and swimmers - this was the best feature the hotel had to offer
• Food was generally good, though limited at lunch and there was a lack of that Caribbean flair at both restaurants
• The majority of staff were friendly and helpful

The Cons:
• Way too expensive overall
• Entire hotel, especially the rooms, in dire need of updating.
• The mattress was obviously very old and sagging in the middle.
• The room was not cleaned and swept properly with the daily maid service; we even found a dead cockroach in the room. There aren’t any floor mats in the rooms, which would have been very helpful seeing that it’s a beach hotel after all and residual sand gets tracked all over the place.
• Lighting in the rooms was way too dim. I guess the hotel may have been aiming for a certain ambiance in the rooms, but it just wasn’t functional at all. Getting dressed for dinner was a bit of a chore.
• The staff seemed to treat the tourists/foreign guests better than the locals (keeping in mind that we didn’t receive bad service per se but we still noticed the difference in attitude from some). Bear in mind the staff were still friendly to us.

Other stuff to keep in mind:

A note to the men: you do need to wear collared shirts at Tamara’s for dinner.

There are lots of restaurants close to the hotel so no need to purchase food from the hotel all the time.

Also be aware that there are noisy seagulls perched along the rocks lining the lagoon, but the noise sort of fades into the background after a while.

Try any of the soufflés for dessert!

Close to airport but you do not hear any noise
A nice welcome with a cool drink, a fast smooth check in,we were shown to room 139 very spacious with 2 large double beds and terrace over looking the sea.a very quiet end of the hotel which was nice.
The room was clean but the bathroom needs an update with poor shower over the bath and a shower curtain which had seen better days .
I did ask for a shower cap and extra towels as there were three of us and pillows which all came promptly, as did ice for the ice bucket and extra glasses .
Let's not dwell on that as you don't spend much time in the room.comfy beds though!
The beach and lagoon is perfect, shallow and so clear you could see all the colourful fish easily, great snorkelling with borrowed equipment from the dive centre at the end of the beach.my husband used the dive centre and they were great.
There is plenty of shade and it wasn't busy so sun beds were easily available, no cushions however a little annoying as I do like them.the towels you get from reception were tired and thin another minor irritation.
The staff were all nice and do a good job but not overly engaging.
Nice touch of drinks brought to you on the beach at eleven and fruit.
The beach bar lunch area was nice, we just had sandwiches at lunch so not sure about the buffet.
The main restaurant where breakfast was served was nice overlooking the beach,a good breakfast buffet.
We had dinner a few times which was good but went just down the road most evenings as a good range of eating places just outside the hotel.
We had a great day out with Stephen from the hotel, who drove us all round the island for a great price.we recommend him he's fantastic.
The food and beverage manager was lovely and eager for feedback.the general manager also came to chat after I had mentioned a few issues and we had a good conversation and listened to our feedback, however I feel he had heard it all before.
We had a great holiday there and we would return.

I went to Tobago with my husband for a totally chill-out relaxing couple of weeks - we couldn't have picked better. Fantastic staff, brilliant position, beautiful outlook, fabulous food - cannot fault this place. Lots of Trinidadians on short breaks - lots of Brits, some Germans, a couple of Americans. Perfect mix. And the ages vary from kids on hols to old farts like us. We were there for my 60th and the staff couldn't have been fabber. Cannot wait to go back but will have to save up lots first........

Room Tip: The garden view room which we had was a lot quieter than the pool or beach side ones. And bigger!!!

According to locals (and British living on the island), this is the best hotel on the Caribbean coast. Number 2 on the island overall but the Magdelana which is No 1 is on the rough Atlantic coast. We drove around the island and there are lush beaches and fantastic scenery. We swam every day in the protected lagoon and it was pure heaven.

Cocoa Reef is a lovely hotel but there are definitely areas which need refurbishment (bathrooms, foyer etc). However it is clean and they are continually repainting and tidying rooms and communal areas.

We like to eat outside and found the formal dining area a little claustrophobic as the heat accumulated under the "dome" despite open sides and tables are quite close. This was the only option on 2/3 nights each week as the casual beach dining area was closed. Incidentally it is the same menu in both restaurants

The staff were polite but perhaps not so outgoing as other Caribbean islands we have visited. They are not natural "service" personnel in the same way as say Spanish and French waiters and due to the laid back environment can be seen to be a little slow. You do get used to this as you wind down! Plus it could be worth ordering more than one drink at a time :) The staff became more friendly as we got to know them. Angela whilst behind the bar (or in the restaurant) was lovely and now knows where to find trip advisor reviews.

The manager was approachable and if you mentioned any areas of concern, immediately put things right if within his power.

The grounds are lovely and whilst the airport is very close we were not disturbed by any aircraft noise at all. The view from our sea view room was beautiful. I would recommend the upgrade.

Tobago is a laid back island, not so developed as some islands and this needs to be taken into consideration. It is a 4* hotel - there are no 5* but we felt overall good value and we had a fantastic holiday.

Get out and see the island - its beautiful. A speedboat ride along the coast is brilliant and I thoroughly enjoyed my first snorkel over the coral reef.

Room Tip: Executive sea view rooms are worthwhile.

Stayed in a 2 bedroom villa. Accommodation fair, a bit shabby. Kitchen was adequate but cooking utensils were poor. Some requests for towels and some kitchen basics required two visits to reception. We were on a breakfast and dinner plan - food was very good, surprisingly so! Staff mostly good and friendly. Fair value for money but it's not the Ritz.

I stayed with my two friends in 2014 and was not only shocked but disappointed in the quality of service at this hotel. They have ridiculous rules and don't understand hospitality. In addition, my tv did not work and my shower leaked. I paid $250 US which is a 4 star price but the hotel is only worth a 2 star price.

The breakfast was nice and the view is nice but that's it!

The main reason I will never stay here again is because my friend got sick and they were not helpful in anyway and we had to take a 20 min cab ride to the hospital even though they claimed that the have a 24 hr on call doctor

The Coco Reef seemed to be an excellent choice for a few day relaxation. Although only 5 minutes from the airport, but hardly any airport noise (seems there's only about 1 flight overhead each day, if that). Rooms were cleaned daily, and it is well worth taking the all inclusive option, as the a la carte restaurant was excellent, and the lunch menu at the beach bar also rather good. During dinner we had a big problem though, when a staff member forgot to mention that a large amount of pineapple was added to the Banana sorbet we had for desert. Ad a sever pineapple allergy and a speedy trip with the local ambulance to the hospital was necessary. These things happen and would not be an issue if the staff member would have offered apologies. But unfortunately he didn’t, even worse, the staff members suggested that we drank an cocktail with some pineapple juice, which was absolutely not the case.
In spite of this incident and the bad attitude of the staff members, we had a few nice days.
