We had a lovely stay at the Hummingbird.
I'd read all the reviews on Trip Advisor before we went and found Paul and Linda as friendly and helpful as anticipated. I called the hotel and booked direct with Linda. They prefer deposits to be paid directly into a UK bank account, which I was a bit concerned about. They were very helpful and did send acknowledgement of receipt of payment by e-mail and everything was fine!
Our room was comfortable and cleaned daily. We had a family room which had a double bed and a converted sofabed.
We were a little concerned about the wires poking out of the top of the shower-head but I think they are normal and the shower worked fine- always plenty of hot water.
We took nearly all our drinks from the mini bar- there's litres of water- which is handy as it's so hot! Every drink you take is replaced daily by Alan (a very helpful retired ex-pat who works at the hotel, along with his wife who I think offers a child minding service) and is as cheap as the local supermarkets.
Our fairly new remote control air conditioning didn't work well when we arrived and kept grinding to a halt but as soon as I mentioned it they set about finding out why/fixing it and calling out the people who installed it. It was perfect after that.
We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis for which we got a free continental breakfast daily (a few cereals, toast and coffee or OJ) but we enjoyed Pauls full English so much we all had one most mornings. We don't think Linda is a morning person- she stays up looking after the bar until late most evenings and then gets up early to serve breakfast!
We set aside one evening to try Pauls infamous cooking. He cooked us local fish and veg and it was one of the best dishes we had on the island. Even his hamburgers are out of this world!
The Hummingbird is a perfect base for exploring the island and a very friendly, family run hotel and we would definately stay again.
The only down side is that it's quite a walk to the livelier parts of Crown Point if you want to go for a drink or meal in the evening (no good if your wearing high heels) or down to the lovely Storebay beach in the morning. It's only about a mile but it feels further in the searing heat. And if you attempt to walk to Pigeon Point from the hotel wear comfortable trainers. It's further than you think! That said, taxis are cheap but I would highly recommend hiring a car!
