“Best place to stay in Tobago”
Reviewed 9 July 2010

My husband and I stayed at the Hummingbird for our honeymoon, and everything about it was fantastic.
Paul, the owner, greeted us upon our arrival, helped with our bags, showed us to our room (a superior suite), gave us a tour, and then left us to settle in.
The room was very clean, well laid out, and very inviting. It had a mini fridge that was stocked with water, pop, and beer, all at reasonable prices, a satellite TV, remote control a/c, an overhead fan, very comfortable queen sized bed, plus a single bed for a third guest if needed. The room was cleaned daily, including new linens and towels.
We decided to take the meal plan, and Paul's cooking did not disappoint! Each meal was delicious and filling, we never left the table hungry. Dinners at the Hummingbird were always eagerly anticipated. Paul will take your dinner order in the morning, and will prepare it fresh.
Paul was a wealth of information, and very helpful. His easy-going nature and wonderful rapport with his guests make for a very memorable stay.
The pool is warm and clean, and we used it every day we were there. The deep end is 6 feet deep, so even the most wary of swimmers will do fine in it.
I can't forget about the pets - there is a puppy, a cat, and a parrot, and all are very friendly and love attention from the guests. They always brought a smile to my face.
The hotel is about a 15 minute walk to Store Bay, but it is a pleasant walk. There are places along the way that you can stop to have a drink or some ice cream.
If you want to tour the island, again, Paul is the one to seek out. His knowledge of the island is priceless, and he marked on the map he provided where the best places to go are located. We rented a car from him for a day, and following his advice, we drove around the entire island and took in some incredible sights.
We intend to return to Hummingbird again, and this time we will bring the family with us! What an amazing place Hummingbird is!!!

I visited the Hummingbird Hotel this May for a short stay. I arrived earlier than the usual check in and was lead to my room with no fuss. The rooms are nicely sized with very little furniture but what is in there is clean in comfortable. The location is great as well. The hotel is actually walking distance from the airport and crown point beach. I will be revisiting this hotel again in the near future!

We stayed for 22 nights at the Hummingbird in february 2010. We found the hotel through the Internet and we are so glad that we took the chance. This hotel was exactly what we needed. It was clean, it was friendly, it had everything we needed, it was working, and it was very reasonably priced.

It's all the small things that made me feel so welcome. Joey the cat who always came along each morning before breakfast to have his tummy rubbed, or the parrot Rainbow who loved humans and trotted along after us for some company, or Paul and Linda Mountjoy (the owners) who often sat down with us for a little chat, or moved away a discrete distance if they noticed that we needed some private time. The pool is always kept in order, which also goes for the rooms. When you stay as long as we did, there is always something that breaks down, but we just rung the bell and Paul took care of it fast and friendly. A bookshelf stands in the kitchen area with donated books from past travellers, we even found some swedish ones!

A simple breakfast is included in the price, but you can add all that is normal from a continental breakfast, at a normal cost. We wanted to explore the island's restaurants, so it was not really a problem that the hotel normally does not serve dinner. However, upon request in the morning, Paul Mountjoy can cook dinner from a selection of ten dishes or so (don't remember exactly how many). I highly recommend his lobster with rice!

The rooms are equipped with minibars that have the same prices as the supermarkets on the island, and are all air-conditioned. The matresses are firm, which I think is the most comfortable when living in hot weather. The television sets are simple but functional. The bathrooms are also simple but functional.

If needed Paul or Linda can do drop-offs in the morning to two of the popular beaches (Pigeon Point and Store Bay). I do not recommend Store Bay. If you want inspiration or advice of what to try out on the island, ask either of them, since they are a goldmine of good things to do. The brochures in the reception were also constantly good tips. It is a bit long to walk to Pigeon Point in the heat, and much of the island's other attraction is in driving distance, so we recommend renting a car or using a good guide such as Joefield.

Now regarding the service, both Linda and Paul live and work there, and are always busy with something. However, when we needed help, they always showed up as soon as they were ready with that they were currently occupied with. We never had to wait long. They always tried hard to make us feel comfortable. Don't expect them to suck up to you like you may expect from other hotels, because they won't, but you can always expect friendly service.

So if you are travelling on a budget, and prefer a personal friendly touch before abundant luxury from people who do not know your name, this is a perfect place.

Just arrived back home from a 7 night stay at the Hummingbird, we had a lovely stay and highly recommend it. Paul and Linda could not have been better hosts, they made us feel right at home, they are a wealth of information and make for great company in the evenings. Paul is an excellent cook, he made breakfast for us every morning and the 2 best dinners we had while on the island. Thier pets Roscoe the dog, Joey the cat and Rainbow the parrot were fun and sweet, although I must apologize to whomever stays in our room next since I got Joey in the habit of coming to our door to wake us up every morning around 6:30 :)
We plan to return soon.

We spent a wonderful 2 weeks at the Hummingbird Inn, which is run by British/Trinidadian couple Paul and Linda. The room was excellent - we took the suite with an attached kitchen as we wanted to partly self-cater. Everything was spotless and our hosts couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful. We might have been concerned at the proximity to the airport but this is really not relevant as there are so few flights. When we ate in the restaurant the food was delicious - actually the best we found anywhere in Crown Point. We had a rental car (from Sheppey's - highly recommended) so access to all local facilities was easy but Paul offers lifts to local amenities when necessary. This was our first trip to Tobago and we would have no hesitation in returning to the Hummingbird for any future visit.

Since I would spend three days in Tobago to explore the whole island by car, I decided to pick a cheap, clean and good place to sleep. The Hummingbird Hotel proved to be a great choice. The owner is very professional and cordial and his near-blind big dog is really something. The swimming pool is very nice and clean, good for relaxing at the end of the day. My only complaint is about the spartan room: the matress was very unconfortable to sleep on and only a micro TV was available (it has cable, though). There is no breakfast included on the basic rate, but considering the main objective of my trip, it was a bargain: about US 70 a day. Last, but not least: there are only four parking spaces in front of this samll hotel, therefore plan accordingly.
