“A major disappointment”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2008

I struggle to understand many of the reviews for this place. I feel we must have stayed somewhere else!!

It is very quiet (and I say that in a positive way) with delightful views over the lake. But note you are over 20km from the volcano and cannot see it from the hotel, so no nice views of a glowing rim at night from the hotel.

My big issues with the place are:

1. The rooms are very old fashioned, dank and smell musty. I have doubts about the cleanliness, but the lighting was too poor to tell how dirty it was.

2. The staff were generally unhelpful and unwelcoming. There was virtually no information on the things to do in the locality. The restaurant staff were at best amateur, and seemed to be the owners' friends. We nearly did not get our dessert one evening becuase the girl who was serving us decided it was time for her to go home!

3. Food was expensive for what it was, and given the distance from town, you have very little option but to eat there. We went to a Swiss hotel up the road one evening, much cheaper, more friendly but we were the only ones in there. And the hippy shack next door to La Mansion does no more than snacks.

4. The swimming pool and jacuzzi were unheated, and therefore pretty well unusable.

This place might have been nice when it was first built, but that was probably 20 years ago. It now needs major renovation to get it anywhere near an acceptable standard.

PS There is a fair amount of comment about driving on the local roads. They have been substantially improved in 2007, and driving to La Fortuna or to Nueva Arenal is now very easy, even at night.

My wife and I went here on our Honeymoon, and it was the nicest of the 4 hotels that we stayed in Costa Rica (and that includes the $400/night 5 star hotel we stayed at). We were virtually all alone, and enjoyed the HUGE jacuzzi and infinity pool all to ourselves. Also, the room was great and very private. There was fresh flowers in our room and bathroom each day. The food was a bit expensive at the hotel, but it was very good! For a less expensive alternative, you can walk outside of the hotel, turn right, and walk about 300 feet to Cafe El Rey where you can get a feast of really good "plato typico" (typical Costa Rican) food for around $5.00. Also, the owner was very kind and helpful with arranging transportation. The views of Lake Arenal were unreal! You will not regret staying here.

Stayed at La Mansion in July 2007. Stunning location, great views. The room was excellent, not your typical hotel room. Ate in the restaurant most evenings, food was very good. Great choice of beers! Highlight of our stay was the trip to Selva Leona (only bookable through La Mansion). Horse riding, walking in the rain forest and BBQ. Local people, setting up their own business. Great experience. Thoroughly recommend la mansion and the trip to Selva Leona.

When: Nov 2007

We were staying at a hotel on the beach and on a whim went for a very long drive. We arrived in the Arenal Volcano area and stumbled across La Mansion Inn. We had a map with plenty of hotels to choose from and while driving in the dark and rain, could never seem to find one. We finally saw a sign in the darkness for La Mansion Inn and turned in.

To our surprise, we were welcomed by a huge smile and a warm personality. We felt sooo very welcomed although we had no reservation and arrived after 7pm. We were offered a drink on the house…we looked pretty beat so I think he knew we needed it. We were asked if we’d plan to join them for dinner and we gladly accepted the invitation.

Considering we disliked the food at the resort we actually were staying in for the week, we were excited to eat elsewhere. We were treated to the most delicious meal we’d had since arriving in CR. Service was exceptional!! Very attentive, full service.

The cottage was adorable!! Complete with private terrace and Jacuzzi in room. The mattress could be updated, it felt a bit sunken and springy. Besides the mattress, we have nothing but wonderful memories of our night. The view the next morning of the foggy lake was breathtaking. The grounds were green and lush, complete with horses grazing.

Breakfast was included and it was another incredible dining experience. Fresh, tasty, delicious food.

We unfortunately only stayed one night since we hadn’t brought clothing and was only planning on a day trip to the volcano from our beach resort. When we return to CR, we plan to spend our week at La Mansion.

La Mansion was our second stop on the Costa Rica and was a perfect stepping stone between a murky English spring, the cool of the Cloud Forest and the sweltering heat of Manuel Antonio. Fabulous setting, but as others have said a long, long way from everything so if, like us, you haven't hired a car it will cost you a fortune in cabs. The food is variable, but the soda next door offers inexpensive really tasty food with a great atmosphere. The staff at the Mansion were amazing - seems to be the norm in Costa Rica - the rooms really comfortable, the view of the lake stupendous and the distance from the main drag meant peace and quiet and a real feeling of being away from it all. Some of the hotels in Arenal are more like small housing estates! La Mansion is well worth a visit and we loved it.

We just returned from a 6 night stay at La Mansion. I traveled with my husband and two boys (11,13). We stayed in a deluxe cottage which included a king bed, two double beds in a separate room, three sinks, a toilet and two showers. There was also a couch, cable TV, A/C, and a refrigerator we used quite often. The fresh flowers in the room each day were also a lovely touch. We travel quite often and to upscale resorts and La Mansion is now our favorite location. The drive to and from La Fortuna was not a big deal, great road, beautiful views and monkeys!!! It was even easy to drive at night. The cottage was VERY private. Listening to the birds each morning is something I will not soon forget. We looked forward to breakfast each day with the fresh fruit, juices, french toast, eggs, bacon, etc. The staff, especially Chris was extremly helpful. They set our tours up ahead of time which included Mundo Adventura zip lines, a MUST do in the area and the PRIVATE rainforest tour with a local family. This was our best experience in Costa Rica...we were treated to a boat ride, and fantastic horses up to a rainforest, a fresh cooked REAL Costa Rican meal and horseback ride back down. I want to thank Chris for all of his work, plus he helped us out when our son got real sick with a cold. He called a Dr. in La Fortuna and within 1 hour we were at the Doctor's office getting my son checked out. The dinners were romantic and having a glass of wine at the bar was a nice experience. My kids loved the pool and the pool table. Pura Vida!

If you are a Tabacon or Paradisus Playa Conchal type (see tripadvisor reviews if you don't know what I mean), you will not like this resort. Quiet, secluded and serene, it is remote in both location and feel. The villas are large, clean and colorful and have a strong local flavor. Its about 30-40 minutes from La Fortuna, but that can be a positive if that's what you want. If you are a confident driver it is not a problem at all, even at night. Your reward is a pastoral lakeview setting instead of the hustle and bustle of the resorts nearer "the strip". The meals were excellent and the service was unobtrusive and yet very attentive and responsive. The beer selection was as good as it gets in Latin America or even in the States for that matter (at least 5 Belgians!). You will meet like-minded travellers there and make new friends since it is an intimate and laid-back place that fosters casual conversation amongst interesting people who seek out-of-the-way experiences. Others have already covered the details, so no need to reiterate here. I just wanted to provide more of an idea of the "feel" instead of the particulars, because I think that is La Mansion's most important attribute.

  • Liked — seclusion and scenery
  • Disliked — trip to and from Arenal/La Fortuna
