“We loved Casa Gavilan!”
Reviewed 13 June 2013 for a stay in May 2013

My husband and I stayed at Casa Gavilan from May 26 to June 5, 2013 and had a great time. The house is very well stocked, very private and sits on a gorgeous lake view lot with private pool, tropical plants, flowers, birds, & monkeys. Ian & Lynn, the owners and Ed and Leslie, the local managers, were wonderful and made sure we had everything we needed. We vacationed with friends and both couples had king size bdrms with private baths. Ian's directions from the Liberia airport were perfect. We had no problem finding the house, even though it was our first trip to Costa Rica. Just be sure to allow plenty of time getting back to the airport for departure as there is road construction going on.

“Fantastic Casa Gavilan”
Reviewed 28 October 2012 for a stay in October 2012

It was a wonderful experience, earthquake and all. Thanks to Ian and Lynn for having such a wonderful home and sharing it with us. Casa Gavilan is exactly as advertised. A beautiful house on a beautiful property overlooking Lago de Arenal. The house was clean and is fully furnished with furnishing that are as nice in appearance as they are in comfort. The decorations make the house actually feel like a home. The movie collection is more than impressive and TV is satellite fed and we watched American and British stations sub-titled in Spanish. The kitchen is well equipped. We wanted for nothing. Everything you need to cook, if you’re so inclined, is there, right down to the cheese grater. The pool is kept spotless by the pool man who comes every morning (M-F) and the grounds are immaculate. Ed Woods, the property manager, was there to meet us with some basics like coffee, and eggs for the next day’s breakfast. He is a very patient and provided invaluable information about shopping and answered all our questions.
Do checkout the folks at Gingerbread. Great cuisine. It’s not cheap but the food is superb and if you leave from there hungry, you’re a monster.
We hope you have as wonderful an experience as we did and as one of the local restaurant’s road ads states, “eat, relax and Just be.”

Pura Vida,

Gary and Laura

“A Jungle Paradise”
Reviewed 3 November 2011 for a stay in September 2011

For a long time I've wanted to visit Costa Rica. After searching through a multitude of VRBO accommodations I came across Casa Gavilan de Arenal and felt good about the place. There was enough room for a party of four with everyone having their own bathroom. There was an eat-in kitchen, a pool, and the jungle all around while situated in a gated community. We couldn't wait to get there.

My fiance and I love photography, especially wildlife. This location does not disappoint as we took many more keeper photos here than anywhere else we visited in Costa Rica. The place is teeming with wildlife. You just have to be quiet and roam and look. Our close encounter with a howler monkey family was the highlight of the trip, never to be forgotten.

The caretakers of the house, Ed and Leslie, are congenial and helpful far beyond expectation. There are plenty of supplies, so there's no need to pick up spices or paper towels or TP at the store. There's plenty of food available nearby in Nuevo Arenal. The people are friendly and helpful even though few speak any English. You can also pick up food supplies, snacks, drinks etc. in Liberia or Tilaran.

We landed at Liberia airport, about 90 minutes drive from Casa Gavilan. If you arrive in the evening I strongly suggest you stay your first night at the Hilton near the airport. The first part of the trip is straight road, but the drivers are reckless and if you drive on a weekend night you will encounter drivers who are extremely reckless. The last half of the drive is through hilly, twisty roads and the locals consider the yellow line as optional. Expect to see vehicles straddling it while speeding around a curve. If your flight is in the early morning, as ours was, I also suggest staying at the Hilton the night before your departure as well. If you book ahead of time the hotel is a little cheaper and it is very reasonable in cost, anyway. The food there is good and the hosts are very cordial.

There are many activities near Casa Gavilan...horseback riding, hot springs, zip lining, hiking trails, tours, etc. You may have a difficult time tearing yourself away from the property, though. If you enjoy photography you will find plenty to photograph.

Ian and Lynn, the owners, purchased Casa Gavilan as a retirement home and they have furnished it accordingly. It is beautifully and cleverly decorated. The patio is a great place to enjoy meals or snacks, even if it's raining.

If you don't feel like cooking in the morning head on over to The Lucky Bug for breakfast. You will enjoy beautiful scenery, friendly service, and the most wonderful food...5 stars all the way. There is also a pizza place on the corner in Nueva Arenal that makes wonderful pizza. People have recommended Gingerbread but our party of four cannot. The entire experience there was unpleasant...our worst in Costa Rica...and I'll post a separate review of that.

As for Casa Gavilan I cannot say enough good things. The owners, the caretakers, the house itself are all top notch and I cannot recommend it highly enough. I should bite my tongue and keep it a secret but some things are just too good to not be shared.
