We stayed in La Pequeña Helvetia for 2 nights and it was quite nice. Definitely the place was built exactly like a typical Swiss chalet that you would find in Swiss Alps valleys... So the decoration and limited mountainous comfort goes along... But fine when you know what to expect! ;-) however special award for the toilet seat, it was the most comfortable i have ever land my bottom on! lol
For such a price the place is decent. The food was ok, although not as fine as in some other more high-end places... We didn't try the Swiss specialities, because as Swiss travelers we didn't feel it would make justice to our trained taste... ;-)
The panoramic restaurant on top of the property with the little train is probably the key highlight here. Check out the lovely chapel/church they built (to pay God's respect for the miracle that healed their daughter) that has impressive paintings/frescoes on the ceilings...
The staff is very friendly and the owners, especially the lady, is really sweet.
Being waken up by a roaring cow is definitely a unique experience... :-)

My wife and I stayed one night a Sat to a Sunday. We were so impressed with the place, the food, the owners, the experience of farming, dairy, and the trip in the train is a must. I recommend this place to anyone who comes to Northern Costa Rica.

Room Tip: Room with a balcony a few more extra dollars maybe $10.00 and the view is excellent the climate is p...

This is between Nuevo Arenal and La Fortuna. If for no other reason go for the scenic view. This is a restaurant owned by a Swiss expat. The food is all local, they make their own cheese and sausages on site. The restaurant was quite good, service was excellent. There is a chapel on the property which is well worth a walk up the hill. The grounds can be viewed from a train that was brought over from Switzerland. This is a very beautiful property.

When we arrived to the hotel, we were invited by Mrs Selena, who is really nice person. The hotel itself is quite cozy with really good service. Breakfast was tasty with europien type of bread. Closed to the hotel there is pool which we unfortunatelly did not use because rainy weather and a lack of time. The owners and staff were kind and helpful. The most charming is that you have a chance to watch the toucans during your breakfast :)

This hotel has a lot of character! The train ride up to the observatory is a must do, fun little tour with a rotating restaurant at the top! Hotel itself was ok, no A/C but we managed ok, guess it is a bit cooler then the coast. Could really use a good cleaning, and new furniture. but with a view like this its hard to stay in your room at all! We sat outside and went to the hot springs so hardly were in the room. luckily. Great price though.

Don't expect Los Heroes to be your typical hotel. Most of the rooms have 2 twin beds and simple furnishings, so your first reaction may not be great. The charm of this hotel lies in its expansive grounds, complete with a large barn full of cows that you can visit and help milk if you like, a charming chapel up on the hillside that rings out each hour, a small train that you can ride, and a wonderful hosts that will provide you with lots of information of things to do in the area. My husband and I got up at sunrise to go looking for howler monkeys and had to unlock the front door of the dark lobby to get outside. Breakfast started at 7 am and we were up at 5 so no one was around. After a great hike up the hillside and then down to the lake,we headed back to the hotel. Did I mention that in our 2 weeks of traveling around all of Costa Rica the best meals we had were at the restaurant at Los Heroes. Even if you don't stay here overnight, you should stop for lunch or dinner. Just look for the German style chalet on the hillside!

Room Tip: Ask for a corner room with a balcony.
