“Wow! Costa Rica in a Nutshell!!”
Reviewed 16 March 2014

Over the years I have traveled all over Costa Rica and overall my favorite place to stay is at the Lucky Bug. True Costa Rica relaxation and hospitality in a setting that oozes of Pura Vida. It really is wonderful with a great restaurant on property and a fun gift shop with handmade quality souvenirs that backs to a view of a small lake and jungle trail that leads into the cloud forest. The rooms are very upscale and tastefully decorated. What a great place to visit!!

Room Tip: I would call for reservations. There are only a few rooms and they are sought after.

Thanks so much for the nice review. It was nice seeing you and being able to have you at our B&B. Hope to see you again the next time you are in Costa Rica. Good luck this season in Colorado. Hope the Pura Vida Cafe has a great year.

My family of four (incl. 2 boys aged 12 & 15) stayed in the Sun Suite for 4 nights in March. This B&B is located on the north shore of Lake Arenal near the town of Nuevo Arenal. It's about 40 minutes to La Fortuna and the zip lining and hanging bridges attractions in the area. It's about 2-1/2 hours to Rio Celeste (horrible road on the last bit near the park) and about 2 hours to Cano Negro (mostly good roads). It took us over 4 hours to get to the area from San Jose.

The rooms are set back from the road sufficiently so that traffic noise is not a problem....it's very quiet except for the lovely sound of the birds (don't plan on sleeping late). The suite was very pleasant, and extremely clean. It had a double bed and two singles, one bathroom, and a kitchenette. There is 3G wi-Fi but no television. There is no Air Conditioning but we were pretty comfortable at night with the windows and door opened (screened). There were surprisingly few pesky bugs so we were quite comfortable both indoors and out during our stay in March. There is an on-property small lake with canoes for paddling around, and there are fish in the lake (bring your own pole).

Pros: The grounds of the B&B are absolutely beautiful and the Sun Suite is nicely decorated. The kitchenette was good for storing leftovers & making morning coffee. The main room was spacious & our family had sufficient room to spread out and relax. We had enough hot water for everyone to shower, and the bathroom was spotless (as was everything). We really enjoyed hanging out on the porch in the mornings and evenings and watching the birds, including toucans and many others. Breakfasts were terrific (especially the French Toast!) and the on site art gallery / shop had fantastic artisan offerings. Monika and Rob were great hosts and were helpful in suggesting and booking activities, including zip lining, hanging bridges, and a personal tour of Cano Negro (great wildlife viewing!). They also gave us good tips on restaurants in the area....our favorite was Delicia's in Nuevo Arenal, although you should also try Equus just for the experience.

Cons: The main con is that it is remote from pretty much everything except the small town of Nuevo Arenal, so you have to have a car. Distances in CR can be deceiving because of the winding two lane roads, (and even some single lane gravel "river bed"-type roads), so even a fairly short trip can require strong driving skills, good tires and shock absorbers, and good nerves. Also be prepared for hard beds (this was true for all of the places we stayed in CR)...this was my only minor complaint about the room itself, although the pretty good pillows helped to offset the hard beds somewhat.

Summary: I'd recommend this for people with cars that are looking for a clean and tranquil, well run B&B. It was a VERY nice place. If you want to be close to the action and are planning to do night time activities you should probably consider something in La Fortuna.

Room Tip: The Sun Suite fit our family of four pretty comfortably because two of us were willing to share the...

So glad you and your family had a good time. I remember watching the toucans, parrots, guans, and other birds from our restaurant with you while the rest of the family was in the room on the internet. We all got a kick out of that. We enjoyed meeting you and hope you will come back and see us again.
Yes, we always suggest that you have a car to go anyplace in CR. And a 4WD at that is always better. Hope the rest of your vacation was good and we are glad we could make your stay in Arenal good for you.

It's bit only a lucky bug but also a lucky find. We were looking for a b&b for 1 night when in the area and there isn't a lot around and what there was, was fully booked. It got dark and we stumbled upon the Lucky Bug. That made us the lucky bugs: when it was light in the morning the magic of the place and the splendid wild tropic gardens became visible. The birds flying in and out were beyon our dreams we had in the luxurious rooms, the breakfast was beyond expectation, the owners and their pets became instant friends and the art gallery is gorgeous (the tiles make excellent coasters) and we therefore stayed another night. Hope to go back there... one day. For now it's good to see how well they still do!

Stayed there for 4 days in Jan 2014 with a baby. This is just a great place to stay! Calm, in a tropical forest with a little lagoon. Nicely designed rooms with lots of space and view, some with own terrace. Owners are lovely, very helpful and prepare the best breakfast we had during a 5 weeks stay in Costa Rica!!! Love their French toast :-).
Great common area where breakfast is served but free to stay all day long if you wish, seems to be a local known place for bird watching.
Nice art gallery and place to shop some local art or souvenirs you find no where else in the surroundings.
The guest were all very friendly too

The basic needs that one expects in a B&B are far surpassed by the loving attention to detail that has been bestowed on Lucky Bug by owners Monika and Rob - especially the beautifully appointed rooms in which art is evident everywhere - hanging on the walls, hand-painted bathroom tiles, bedside lamps, headboard, hand-painted bathroom sink, light fixtures, custom-made soap, etc., etc. Linens in the rooms are very nice also. The meticulously-groomed grounds also have subtle works of art interspersed with the flora - large hand-cast "mushrooms" that glow in gorgeous colors at night guide the way from the restaurant to the B&B and create a fairyland with their whimsy. The restaurant area overlooks a private lake where guests can watch birds, kayak, fish or just enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Colorful mosaic tile table tops complement the relaxing setting. Besides providing good food and tour guidance, Monika and Rob spend a lot of time chatting with their guests and making them feel at home. In addition to the B&B, there is an excellent store/gallery for purchasing Costa Rican jewelry, art, ceramics, etc. Bird watching is excellent.

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms facing the lake have balconies and a nice view.

We did not stay at the Lucky Bug but rented a villa that was close by. The villa owner, Ian, recommended the Lucky Bug restaurant. We were in Costa Rica with friends and the 4 of us ate breakfast at the Lucky Bug twice and dinner once. Monika normally served just breakfast and lunch but invited us for a special German dinner which was wonderful! Monika was full of information about where to go and what to see in the area. We enjoyed her food, her gift shop and her company, a delighful lady!

My boyfriend and I spent two nights at the Lucky Bug and had a very nice time. The gardens are beautiful, and everything in the rooms has the artistic touch of the owners. They were very friendly hosts. The breakfast was delicious- especially the coffee. Fabulous. I'd recommend this place to friends.

Room Tip: All the rooms were beautiful (from what we could see); turtle room doesn't have a balcony. Other...
