Coffee Shack has loads of activities for their guests to do and is definately the best backpackers in Coffee Bay. Every night there is a sunset tour to out of reach places to watch the sun set over Coffee Bay while having sundowners. They definately make the best cup of coffee, not just in Coffee Bay but in general. Accomodation is neat and clean and you will find almost everything you need from laundry service. Only complaint I have is that I feel more effort can be made to assist guests in securing activities that is not on the agenda during your stay. We were only giving the name and number of guides to take us on trips they did not offer while we were there and either the guides did not answer their phones or did not get back to you. Coffee Bay is difficult to get to and most of us only have one opportunity to do the things we went there to do.

Hello Stella
Thanks you very much for the great review and it is great to hear that you had a great stay at Coffee Shack.
Sorry about problems you may have experience when organising local guides, we will look into the matter. Although we must state that for a variety of reasons, this situation is more complex than it seems on the surface, as with many things in remote rural areas like the Wild Coast.
Safe travels and we hope to see you again soon.

Very impressive at first, but after a while you realise that the exact same words that you heard on arrival are recited by rote to every new group of guests, they play the same bar games to get you drunk every evening, push you to book the same tours every day etc etc etc.

In other words, it's a sausage factory, and you're the sausage. I guessed that if the staff stopped smiling and being your long-lost friend for even a second, they'd be in serious trouble with the management, hence the fixed, manic grins. It's not natural.

A word about drugs in Coffee Bay: I have never seen such flagrant criminality anywhere in the world. You will be mobbed (literally) by hordes of drug dealers trying to sell you marijuana, magic mushrooms, and who knows what else. This happens in broad daylight, in the middle of the street. They will even shout at you over the hostel's fence. The management at Coffee Shack say all sorts of things to make it seem ok, and say that it's not their responsibility, but I don't buy it. This only happens here (nowhere else in SA, or the world), and the reason that it happens is that it's tolerated. It is APPALLINGLY IRRESPONSIBLE. If I was a parent of one of their guests (who are mainly teenagers), I'd be horrified. Coffee Shack needs to clean up it's act double quick time, in my opinion.

Not my cup of tea, thank you very much. I'd say Coffee shack's good for a few days if you're 18, want to get very drunk and stoned, or are in desperate pathological need of friends. Otherwise, give it a miss - there are far more relaxed, beautiful, GENUINE places on the coast, and without the sleaze.

Room Tip: Don't stay across the river - it's dangerous to cross at night.

Hello
Thank you very much for taking the time to review Coffee Shack, we always appreciate guest feedback both positive and negative, so that we can work on improving our service to guests. Having said that; it really disappoints us to hear that you did not have a fantastic stay at Coffee Shack, as we (staff & management of all levels) work really hard to ensure that we give good, professional service to all of our guests. Yes, our check in tour is virtually identical for each new guest, because we care about every guest and we want everyone informed, comfortable and feeling at home, this basic information does not change regularly. With all the languages involved, and being a fun, friendly environment, we find that a smile is literally worth a 1000 words, and a friendly smile goes a long way to making a new arrival feel comfortable and at home, in an instant.

The guys "hustling" outside can be annoying at times, but if you humour them they are as friendly as anyone else. Coffee Shack does not in any way condone their activities, and we work closely with our local traditional authorities to find solutions. But as in most things in life, the issues are a lot more complex than is immediately apparent, to the casual observer.

Thanks for your feedback, safe travels
Cheers David & the Coffee Shack crew

I spent 3 days and 4 nights here and it's probably the most memorable part of my trip in South Africa. Everyone, from the owners to the staff, was wonderful. After the first day, most of the staff knew my name, even though I can't pronounce theirs. Food was great and the prices very reasonable. I had the same omelette for breakfast all 4 mornings I was there. Free oysters and mussels whenever they can find them on the beach. This place is Fair Trade Certified and they mean it. Their staff are paid reasonable wages and they support the local community and other villages in the region. They have daily activities that are fun and very reasonably-priced. You can't get cheaper surf lessons anywhere - R50 for 2 hours! If I am traveling through the Wild Coast of South Africa again, this is one place I will come back to. Thank you Dave, Belinda, Maya, Josh and all the Coffee Shack staff, for making my time at Coffee Shack so wonderful.

Room Tip: Ask for the King's Hut or other huts across the river

I can't say enough good things about Coffee Shack. When I arrived, it was such a cool, laid back atmosphere that I immediately felt at home. Everyone who worked there is extremely personable and really go out of their way to know everyone they meet. Even though there were lots of other travelers going in and out, I was always surprised that the staff always called everyone by name. Such a cool place. My only regret was that we couldn't stay longer.

This was the one hostel where the party was on. Really cool vibe. Free drinks on a arrival. You don't need to worry about food as they make breakfast, lunch and supper everyday. And you decide what u want and it goes on ur tab. They also organised a tour everyday but if you only staying a short time and want to do specific tour they can organise that specially. Really well run. Thanks guys:) for the unique backpacking experience

Hello
Thank you, for the great review! It is actually surprisingly complex and hard work making the Coffee Shack, run smoothly, due to the remote location and logistics associated with this. So your compliments are much appreciated by everyone working at Coffee Shack.

Safe travels and we hope to see you again soon.
