Stopped here as a party of four on new years eve. Cold and wet outside but they had the fires roaring. We had our dogs with us which was never a problem, they slept in the car at night although we had a dog friendly room as they are used to that.
Had a few drinks late afternoon around the fire with the dogs watching a stream of local farmers coming in for a quick drink and catch up.The evening music and fireworks around the church made for a good new year. Good beer on draught and the food was lovely with a nice breakfast served by a very tired chef and helper always with a smile.
Our room was smallish but fine, good value for new years eve especially.
All in all our stay was enjoyable, friendly staff and locals.Perfect bloody mary's,good beer, good food and warm.
Will be trying again in the summer months

I stopped for two nights on two consecutive weeks in the Crown and Mitre at the beginning of December for work, and I must say what a lovely place it is! I was travelling alone and the staff all made me feel very welcome. The meals were amazing and my room was very clean, cosy and warm, and there was plenty of hot water to fill the big bath tub each night. The only problem I found was I wasn’t able to get any signal for my mobile, but that’s due to the location. Overall a lovely place to stop.

We stayed in the self catering apartment at the top of the pub, attracted by the pictures and the location - above a pub seemed ideal!

First the good. There's a lot of space in the apartment, and it was spotlessly clean. The main living area is large and light, and the furnishings modern and in good condition. The bed in the main bedroom was super-comfortable (probably the best feature of the entire place!). The window in the main bedroom, although small, framed the kind of view that you'd hope to have in this area. The staff were all friendly, as were the other guests.

The less than good. Firstly, the level of equipment in the kitchen. Who ever heard of a self-catering apartment without a single saucepan? Not to mention no washing up liquid, no oven gloves, no dishcloth and no tea towel! Trips downstairs to the bar in the pub rectified most of it (oven gloves proved impossible) but it didn't feel good. No sign of the "welcome hamper" promised on the website either (didn't bother to ask about that one). If there were in fact 6 people staying there, the bedroom space would be fine but seating in the living room and the size of the dining table were aimed at just 4. And that's without listing the missing crockery, and strange selection of cutlery which would not have set the table for 6! Lots of light in the living area, but all via rooflights meant no views (of anything, let alone the Lakes countryside), and when it rained they were not watertight!

Then the more on water. On the first night, we actually ended up with no water at all at one point. Down to the bar again. "Wait 10 minutes and see what happens" was the response. Sure enough, the water did come back on again. After a couple of days we decided that as we were at the top of the building, we only got water (or sometimes hot water) if others were not drawing their baths at the same time. Oh well.

And then the wierd. It felt as though we were guests in someone else's house, while they had just popped out. Makeup still in the drawers, piles of toys in the bottom of the wardrobes, kitchen cupboards still full of cupasoup and miscellaneous items that didn't look at all as though they were there for the use of self-catering guest. All a bit odd. It seemed as though whoever lives there gets to move out when they get a better offer, rather than a place set up for self-catering guests year round.

We had been intending to eat there sometimes, but by the time we'd struggled to cater for ourselves, visiting the bar only with the latest demand, and run the gauntlet of the strange boiled cabbage smell in the hallway in the morning we decided not to. So no comment on the food - maybe we missed the culinary experience of a lifetime, maybe not. We'll never know!

So all in all, not the best, in our view, unless space is your only priority.

We returned to the Crown & Mitre after 25 years and the pub had been thoughtfully refurbished to a lovely comfortable standard, with excellent food and drinks. We had
a very friendly welcome when we arrived and our 2 night stay was very enjoyable.
We will return again alot sooner.

Room Tip: Enjoy the wonderful local walks. Better than tearing around the Lake District in a car.

We were pleasantly surprised by the Crown & Mitre - we stayed one night here on our way up to the North of Scotland. It is really convenient as it's close to Shap on the M6. We received a cheerful welcome, our room was spacious and clean and our en-suite shower was powerful and very welcome after a 7 hour drive. The bar area is big and strangely modern, like something out of a city boutique hotel, but none the worse for that. Dinner was excellent and we slept like logs in the comfy bed. The church bells ringing throughout the night were a talking point but we were so tired we didn't hear them until early morning. The breakfast having to be ordered the night before threw us a bit too but we didn't bother then found we could have whatever we wanted when we went down in the morning. Perhaps they should amend the welcome pack in the rooms. There are some great short walks from the village which were useful as we had a dog, the room rate was £80 plus £5 for the dog. This is a little gem and we will definitely stay here again.

After driving over 4 hours,We arrived to a very friendly welcome and though the bar was busy we were dealt with in a quick and efficient manner. Our room was warm and nicely decorated with quality furnishings. We then made our way back to the bar and enjoyed some excellent food (very healthy portions) all served with a smile. This is a hidden gem,one of which we shall return to as soon we can.

We arrived tired and a bit muddy after a long section of the Coast to Coast walk. The welcome was superb, and they asked about our walk, which way we had come, and so on. They even moved us to a (huge!) room with a beautiful rolltop bath after I said my wife would prefer a room with a bath. The staff were all very friendly. Food in the evening was outstanding...my steak pie was the best I have ever had (and the largest). The instructions in the room say that cooked breakfast must be ordered the night before, but actually that turned out not to be the case, and breakfast was both hearty and delicious. This is a very superior inn, without the superior prices. Lovely location just over the bridge and opposite the church. Highly recommended.
