“Highly recommend the Riverside Lodge”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2013

Our two day stay at the Riverside Lodge and with Martin, the manager, was exceptional. The entire hacienda experience was very special and relaxing and complements the atmosphere of Batopilas. Don't worry about the extra cost which really isn't that much over regular motel rooms in Batopilas. The experience will remain with you forever.

I would also like to say Ivan and Yolanda at Tres Amigos in Creel were very helpful with our trip. Their information about the area and places to see and do were spot on. We rode our motorcycle down to Batopilas and their information was very valuable.

We were warned of security issue by everyone who has never been down there but I can say there was not one time or instance where we felt uncomfortable during our two week ride to the Copper Canyon area.

We are very proud of a recent recognition to our beloved Batopilas as a Magic Town. The road to the bottom of the Batopilas CAnyon got compeleted, and without a doubht it is still one of the most spectacular in the American Continent. The descent takes only one hour, and the fun is till there; along with the gorgeous views one can only admire the magnificent natural scenarios and Mother's Nature grandeour. Greetings and Warmest Regards.

As many others have said, this is an incredibly special place, I doubt more than a few of these exist anywhere. The property is remarkable, I've spent several hours just wandering through it and enjoying all the little areas. As a landscape designer, I so appreciate the thought, and fun, and folly, and touches that have gone into this property. Just when you think it ends, there is another corner, or stairway, or sitting area, or special place. The rooms are ALL wonderful, all very unique. And I know, because we are the only guests here just now, and we looked in every single one. All the staff is so very wonderful, I've been touched by their care and attentiveness. If you love special places, something like you may never see again, this is the place. Oh, and it's clean, the bathrooms are very nice - ours is huge, the size of a regular room - the beds are very comfortable, and we could easily stay here a week to further enjoy this.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms have the bath inside the bedroom.,. separated by wonderful 7' paneled walls...

This is one of the most beautiful small boutique hotels I've ever stayed at or seen. The ceilings in the salon are painted as are the walls throughout the hotel. The manager is attentive, the breakfast good and after a long day of hiking we were greeted with cold naranjito juice freshly sqeezed from fruit on their trees.

It's a long and beautiful drive on a rough road to Batopilas. What a marvel to find the colourful Riverside Lodge and the most charming of all Managers. Martín Alcaraz Gastelum was always on hand to give us a wonderful stay. Caring to see that we made nice and safe excursions.

Riverside Lodge is located in a deep canyon that takes a bit of effort to get to, but it is totally worth the effort. Batopilas is 5-6 hours on a long winding road from Creel, deep into the canyon and silver mining history. The hotel is really a grand casa set back in time with all the history and nooks and crannies to explore. It may be hard to reserve, but request this hotel through Tres Amigos is the best bet, rather than pay a 15 percent service charge though a site in the US, Martin, the host, was totally amazing, sending us on walks or rides, but then mysteriously being near the end of our route to see if we were fine. Settle into a claw foot tub full of bubbles and listen to the past in a room of antiques and fine linens. Total atmosphere!

Room Tip: Alberto upstairs with windows to the street and tub is great!

This place is unlike no other hotel I have ever stayed in. It is a magical place, that captivates visitors. I would go back in a heartbeat.

We stayed at the Riverside Lodge on our recent trip down into the Copper Canyon. The hotel is managed by the most lovely man, Martin, whose thoughtful touches and friendly presence go above and beyond. Humberto is also helpful and kind, assisting with any requests. The hotel is a maze of rooms, full of quiet nooks to sit and enjoy a good book or take gorgeous photos. The hotel itself is an experience, with history, photographs and stories around every corner. The house has been lovingly restored, and guests are well taken care of with bathrobes, a library to peruse, and a simple breakfast of fruit and bread.

This is truly a magical hotel in a charming canyon city. The drive alone to Batopilas is worth it. I recommend you stay in Batopilas for at least 2 nights to fully appreciate the step back into time you are taking. I have been to many hotels in Mexico over the years, and if you are looking for a unique experience, make a point of staying here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with claw-footed bathtub!

Brilliant colors, gurgling fountains, hidden patios, loads of antiques and charming hosts describes Riverside Lodge.

From the moment the tour guide pulled up in front of this hotel, the caretaker made you feel at home. During my stay, I was the only guest at the hotel, a two hundred year-old mansion that occupies most of a city block.

All the rooms are brightly colored, filled with antiques and open onto a maze of interior patios -- most with fountains. There was not heat or air conditioning, but it wasn't needed. The thick walls muffled the sounds of the few cars, burros, dogs and children that passed underneath the bedroom windows. And those walls maintained the perfect room temperature during my visit.

Speaking of the room, it was huge. As the only guest in the hotel, I was given the "presidential suite." The room had two massive antique double beds, and a bathroom that was almost as large as the bedroom. Had a huge antique clawfoot soaking tub! Nice after a week of showers only hotel rooms.

The owner of the hotel invited me to go through the rooms at my leisure, and I did. Nothing was locked. The kitchen was open and fully stocked with cookware, had I the desire to cook, but as this was a vacation, I opted for the steaming coffee and sweet biscuits that were awaiting me when I awoke in the morning.

Aside from some noise from the street, the hotel was perfectly, peacefully quiet. It was like a step back in time. The hotel had books to read and a vintage radio (which was equipped with a modern stereo unit) that played beautiful classical music, allowing you to sit and reflect in a quet alcove. Like most of the hotels in the Copper Canyon, there are no TVs, phones or Internet. And being so deep in the canyon, my cell phone didn't work. None of these "conveniences" were missed. In fact, it was so nice to rest, and get away from all of the electronic leashes that so many of us have grown used to.

Utter peace and tranquility. Can you imagine a place where people are so friendly, even the local dogs lay on the ground, not moving, except to wag their tail in greeting as a stranger walks past.

This hotel does not serve food other than the coffee/biscuits, as described. However, there are a couple of restaurants nearby that serve hearty local cuisine. As a dog person, I found it delightful that the resident dogs "know" all the residents and are welcoming to the few tourists that make their way to Batopilas. The restaurant where I ate lunch during my stay had one feisty four-legged welcoming committee, that had learned how to "nose" the door open and squeeze in making a beeline for the nearest table where he would ever so quietly eat whatever food the restaurant guests would sneak him under the table. Then, before the restaurant owner could escort him out, this smart little pup would leave as queitly as he had entered.

So heart-warming.

Fell in love with Batopilas. If you can survive the hair-raising drive down into the canyon, you will be richly rewarded with Martin's warm hospitalitiy at Riverside Lodge.

When I return to Batopilas, will make it a point to stay at the RIverside Lodge.

For $80 a night, staying at the Riverside Lodge is a bargain.
