Not much to say that hasn't already been said.definitely a must, but it is better to visit when it is not windy(quite rare..).if you visit by boat don't miss the combined excursion to both ballos beach and gramvousa island

2 ways to get there. By boat or by car.
Boat from Kissamos, but we chose to drive.
You drive past Kissamos harbour through some narrow streets until you come to the National Park. Pay your 1 euro per person and then drive 8km along a dirt/cinder/stone track that will shake your bones. Keep your car windows shut to keep out the dust and the bees. There are dozens of bee hives in this area and people selling local honey. At the end of the track/road park the car, stroke the goats and walk 15-20 minutes down the hillside to the beach. It's a trek, so don't say you haven't been warned. You can always ride the mule or horse. Most people walk down, but not everyone walks back.
The beauty of going by car is that you get to spend all day there rather than just 2 or 3 hours on the boat. However with the boat you can visit to Island Fort on Gramvousa.
Anyway, the place is simply beautiful, popular, so can get busy, but lots of room for everyone. 2 little bars/restaurants close by, however we didn't use them so can't tell you what they were like. We took ice cold beer in a cold box. Remember, you have to carry it a long way !! and back !!!

Extra-ordinary place. Elafonisi beach looks average after you visit Balos. Its hard access and position in the north-western-most angle of Crete rejects tourist hordes so far. However there are 3 boats a day which will add some 500 people, but dotn worry, its a huge area, so you dont feel totally crowded.

I highly recommend arrival by car: 1. you can spend a whole day here including sunset 2. you can have a magnificent vista while descending in the morning-early afternoon hours with sun behind you - perfect timing for shooting best holidays photos. 3. When the sun goes up you should hike Cape Tigani and take photos from the other side (try to do this before 14h or so when big ferry from Gramvousa fortress enters the lagoon and spoils the image). Bring your own supplies. No taverna, just ordinary snacks. Drivin is tough, after Kissamos its 10km of difficult road, but it pays out in the end. A MUST VISIT for everybody based in Chania or Rethimno. Rather come here put a little effort, and skip Elafonisi which is so commercial.

The beach is beautiful, crystal water... And if you are not lazy go up to the castle where you can have an amazing bird's view.
We took a boat from Kissamos then the boat stops in the island where the castle is and then after and hour I guess it takes you to the Balos beach where you can spend the rest of the afternoon. It was the best place we went in Crete!

It was a bit windy on the day of our visit, regardless we had a lovely day and the views were stunning! Enjoyed just walking around in the warm shallow areas!
