Lovely hotel, friendly and helpful staff. Great entertainment if you want a full on holiday. If you want a peaceful and relaxing holiday this is not for you. The reps work extremely hard and are excellent with the children and the adults.
You have to be up before 7.30 to get a brolly and sunbeds.
The resort is lovely but is a good 15-20 minute walk from accomodation, all be it a very attractive walk with bars along the way. The resort is very expensive (not as a result of exchange rate) Make sure you go to main supermarket not the spar as spar is at least 3 times more expensive.
Visit the old town of Alcudia and Pollensa!1

This was our third stay in Pollensa. Twice previously at the Puerto Azul, Thomson Superfamily, and this time 2 weeks at the Playa Mar (21 July - 4 August).

This is not a 4* Hotel by any stretch of the imagination. Rooms dated. Maid service - didn't do a good job once. We had to buy bathroom spray to clean our own bath!! Floor never mopped properly. The pool was dirty in places - scummy under the feet!
The areas around the pool not cleaned once during my 2 weeks. Every morning at 10.00am still litter from previous night all over. The sunbeds are left out over night, so no cleaning can take place. The sunbeds are packed tight, shoulder to shoulder, especially around the childrens section of the pool. If you want to reserve one, you need to be up by 6.00am. People got up and sat on beds from that time!!!!
We opted for Half board - food in hotel a bit school dinner like. Breakfasts good, evening buffet service meals less than average. Be prepared to cue for meals as the restaurant is relatively small. Prices is hotel bar average in price - 3 euros a pint, 4.90 for a Vodka and tonic, 2.20 for a Fruit Shoot!! The hotel run supermarket is very expensive. Eroski supermarket - is much better and well priced. 3 course meal at Maxim on the Square 65 Euros.
The Entertainment team has been changed in the last 3 days. We started our holiday with Dan the Man - lead entertainer - who was brilliant - the best I've ever seen - engaged all ages, able assisted by Lady Kerry, who is in her first year as an entertainer, but doing a great job. Sadly, Thomson and its partner First Choice and moved Dan to another hotel on the island to rescue its suffering entertainment, and have replaced him with Funtime Freddie. He has only been at the hotel for 3 days, but I have to say he is terrible. The kids reps do a great job. Although Chloe could do with smiling a bit more and looking and acting a tad more enthusiatic (and not a bulldog chewing a wasp!).

After talking with several other guests, many who have stayed here before, believe that the hotel has declined markedly from last year and most would agree with the statements made above. This holiday cost £4200 for 4 adults and 1 child - aged 5. Not value for money!!!

I will agree with most of the reviews on here. Yes it was a lovely resort, yes the Thomson reps were fab and yes we all had an amazing time. I thought I would share things with you that dont get a mention but I wish I'd known before I went.

If you book independantly as we did your room may not be ready for some time. We arrived at 12pm but were told we could not have our room until 7pm. Excuse was Thomson didnt know when we would arrive and therefore gave our room to late checkout people instead. The hotel did provide complimentary snack and drink from the snack bar which was very nice. Weather was red hot and this was not a good start to our holiday.

There is a laundry room in the basement which was 3 euro to wash, 3 euro to dry and there is an iron and board set up next to it.

Safe in the rooms was 17.50 euro per week. Internet 1 euro for 10 mins.

Breakfast was 8 euro adults and 5 euro for kids. (Beware - kids prices only went upto 12 years). The breakfast was of very high standard, back bacon (not streaky) and english sausage, omlettes, hard boiled, scrambled and fried eggs, beans mushrooms, tomatoes and even chips. Good selection of fruit, danish and even continental ham and cheeses. Enough for everyones tastes. Evening meal 15 euros (half price for kids) was not as nice, One choice of meat, lots of salads, various other dishes. We only had evening meal once as there were 5 of us and all were classed as adults. My kids couldnt find enough to fill them (unless they ate copious amounts of chips or pasta). We found it was not worth the money.

Hotel is very expensive. Bar drinks were ridiculous. 15 euros for 3 non-alcoholic cocktails. Jug of sangria 11 euros. Bottle of wine 9 euros. My friend nearly choked at 2.50 for a little fruit shoot and 1.50 for a small bag of monster munch. Found most of the staff at the Playa Mar to be quite rude. (Tip to the hotel - make your staff smile a little, its a holiday hotel for Gods sake.) Didnt look happy at all. Watch out for bouncy castle. 2.50 euros for 15 mins (Im glad I didnt have 3 little ones with me). If you want to play tennis its 6 euros plus 3 for a deposit for one hour play, This is the first hotel Ive been to where you actually had to pay extra for most facilities.

Walk into town was as most say 20 mins. Lovely pine walk but in the heat and with little legs in your party you will find it takes a lot longer and by the time you get there your whole party is dripping in sweat. Not good. We were in a party of 10 people all of different ages and found it easier to get taxis (6 euros). This was an added cost. The town itself has a vast amount of restarants. Most of these were really over priced. Our second night there 5 burger and chips and 2 soft drinks each 97 euros. Most meals were roughtly around 10 euro. Thats not counting drinks, starters or desserts. Not many quality souvenir shops. Either really expensive designer things or overpriced tat.

Nice enough beach, although very rocky and alot of seaweed. Beaches in Cala Millor, Sa Coma and Palma Nova much nicer. Pedlos 12 euro to hire for one hour. Frequent bus service to Alcudia. (Didnt use this so cant tell you the prices, maybe someone else can!)

It may seem that we did not enjoy our holiday which is not the case. The weather was fantastic, not one spot of rain and very high temps the whole time we were there. Thomson reps were fab, Kerry and Dan were top class. (Dan has left to "live the dream" at the Holiday Village in neighbouring town), he will be a big miss and competitions throughout the day meant there was something for everyone. The evening entertainment was 1st class, the tribute bands were all of a very high standard.

We have previously stayed at the Bonaire in Cala Bona which is another Thomson Superfamily and this was far superior in every way to the Play Mar, from the reception staff to the cleaners and feel that Protur Hotels beat Mar Hotels hands down. Thomson were fab but the hotel and staff let them down. We love Majorca and would return again, just not to the Playa Mar.

Hotel had all facilities, staff were great, childrens entertainment spot on. Our children aged 4 & 7 - went to childrens clubs & really enjoyed it (get there early to guarantee a space). We were half board & the food was really good. If you want to get to bed early make sure you get a room away from the pool area - as it was loud most nights. Beach just 5 mins walk - a bit pebbly in some parts(wear shoes in water - our youngest cut his foot on rocks in sea) Main part of resort was good 20min walk (5€by taxi)- nice church square with bars etc round it. Be aware of pricey mini-market at hotel(cheap supermkt Eroski-in centre or 10min walk along road to Spar). As with all hotels - drinks not cheap!

Really, really enjoyed ourselves at thePlaymar and would definately recommend it as a brilliant property for families, the entertainment was full on and the Thomson reps were great as were the hotel staff.
The one major sticking point was the sunbed situation, unless you are up before 8am, forget a sunbed or umbrella! The Germans do not have a patch on the Brits!!
We just gave up in the end and rather than stress about it went to the little beaches which were only a 2 minute walk away from the hotel.
Rooms were basic and cleaned regularly.
Food at snackbar was adequate.
All in all a good holiday that lived up to its 4* rating
