“Decent place”
Reviewed 14 August 2013

the Oro Playa apartments are in a perfect position, only a minute or so walk from the sea and with a number of supermarkets nearby. We stayed in K14, apartment was clean and bright but not big enough for 4 almost adults. Sleeping on the sofabed was impossible (leather sofa with biscuit thin mattress so you could feel every spring straight through it) - this one thing took the shine off everything else the apartments had to offer so that was a real shame. (Balcony didn't have enough space for us and the patio and table and chairs either). No problems with air con, it was a godsend to get in to cool off from the hot days.

We didn't realise there was a snack bar until the last day but to be honest getting out and about was a lovely thing; we saw lots of the resort and found other places that we'd rent instead of paying a lot more money for a small room. So many places to eat right on the sea front, Pollensa has the class that Alcudia is missing.

I wouldn't stay there again, there are so many other opportunites in Puerto Pollensa and I'd go back there tomorrow but stay elsewhere where there are 4 beds for 4 people. The Oro Playa is a real family place, you felt safe there but I'd want more room for my money. For a couple it would be ideal but I'm not sure if you'd feel odd there without children of your own.

Just to add there's a lovely cafe/restaurant Pine's just at the start of the walk, very very reasonably priced, free wifi and showing football matches. Great welcome from the staff too.

Room Tip: Pluses and minuses wherever you are, we were in K which faced the road and they empty the recycling...

This time we stayed in a refurbished apartment, having paid extra when booking for this.
Some parts of the refurbishment were good (the firm but soft king size memory foam mattresses for a start!) but the refurb seemed a little badly though out as it was a bit lacking.
Good points: new mattress, new floors (wooden not ceramic tiled), new sofa bed, flat screen tv, new hob, microwave, toaster & kettle, walk in rain shower in refurbished bathroom, key cards
BAD POINTS: no bedside lights though switches for them exist!, old steel sink refitted and old fridge also refitted to new kitchen, shower very difficult to control, opaque glass door on bathroom which didn't leave much to the imagination when someone was at the other side of it doing their business, air conditioning not refurbished so we had to ask for a fan, no drawers for your undies or small bits as no room in bedroom for them once the king size bed is in there, only two double beds replacing a double and two singles so less flexible with older, different sex kids. None of these bad points were really bad but I cannot help but think that the refurbishment could have been thought out a little better.

Nevertheless we had a lovely holiday here. The staff are always very pleasant and nice and the maids are friendly and frequent. I did however, miss the daily aqua aerobics that "SuperKen" did in 2012. Manuel was perfectly good amiable entertainment guy though he wasn't great at sticking to the scheduled events nor was he such a big personality as SuperKen had been.

These apartments are in a great place. Within minutes you can be at the beach, the Pine Walk, the market, the supermarket, the cash machine, the restaurant, the bus stop...nowhere is too far to walk even for the laziest of us :-)

There were only two blocks refurbished but the receptionist said there would be more done over the winter until all were done. The good thing is there was no work or noise going on over the summer season. With a mountain facing top floor room the only "noise" we had was from the Puerto Azul's tacky evening entertainment programme.

I still do recommend this place despite the niggles with the refurb but let us hope the owners take on board the criticisms and do something about them!

Room Tip: Depends on what you want but the high floor mountain view rooms have lovely sunshine in the evenings...

We have just returned from two weeks at the Oro Playa and found the hotel tired and in need of a tidy up but the location is great, the bar staff Caroline ,Andreas and Tony are brilliant and Emanuel the entertainment guy is one in a million! If the hotel lost him the may well struggle. Fantastic guy that had different activities for the kids and adults to get involved in. I have a 16 year old daughter and 8 year old son and they were both entertained.
The location of this hotel is ideal and just across the road from the beach and many restaurants and shops.
We had problems with our air conditioning that didn't work for four of the days we were there that did make it slightly uncomfortable but the rooms were clean with fresh towels everyday.
My main reason for the 5star rating is for the staff and no other reason.

This was a late booking for my husband and I...travelled three days after booking, did my research into area and apartments. The reviews for Oro Playa were true to form..very clean, the staff were great and rooms need lots of TLC. The entertainment for the adults was rubbish, we watched from our balcony some nights and it was painful. The front of the Oro looks shabby and uninviting
although once you step inside it does get better. Heard one lady saying that this was her 10th year in a row to the Oro and liked it because she knew what she was getting for her money.....good for her.. I would go back to the area but not to these apartments.

Stayed in the Oro Playa for 1 week at the end of July. This is our 7th visit in the last 10 years but 1st time in the school holidays. Travelled with my mother and children (12 & 9)
As usual the service from all staff was excellent the cleanliness of the rooms, pool, bar were excellent, Manuel (entertainment) excellent and location excellent
We had no trouble with either water or air conditioning during our visit. We were aware of some problems with air con on our last day (the Saturday the previous reviewer mentioned) and at 9.00AM there were 6 men with lots of equipment fixing it!
Yes the rooms need updating and apparently all rooms will be done ready for next year's season.
My only complaint is the reservation of sun beds - all had gone by 7.30am (not a problem when we usually go in June). Yes there are lots broken but this is the misuse of the clients as all sunbeds were brand new last season (if people treated other people's property with respect this would not happen!).
As regards previous complaints about the management there was 1 day in our visit there was a member of senior manager very visible throughout the day taking towels to guest rooms and generally being around.
I will definitely be back. This is a very good value for money holiday and would recommend it!

Room Tip: Ground floor over looking the pool

We have been to oro playa 3 times and it has been amazing every time we have been. We went for 7 nights in july as a family 2 adults and 2 teenagers. There's something for everyone. The entertainer Emmanuel was fab he held activities for all different ages like :water polo, table tennis, rifle shooting, water aerobics, kids disco's, kids water basketball and different unique games that anyone could play, you could tell he cared as he remembered everyones names. The atmosphere is lively but relaxed you can sit by the pool or walk out the hotel and you're at the beach. The hotel is situated in a perfect place just behind the pine walk which is the main street along the beach with lots of different restaurants and shops. This year we got one of the newly done up rooms and it was lovely and the air conditioning worked perfectly fine. The bar staff were always really happy and friendly and spoke to us even when they werent working, however during the day i thought more staff were needed. Me and my sister made friends with the other teenagers and it's a safe area so we were let out along the beach etc at night. It was an amazing holiday and we'll defintely be back soon.

Room Tip: ask for the new rooms, they are better quality. The rooms round the back are quieter but not very go...

Juts returned from the Oro Playa, which was our 2nd time here in as many years. Pretty much the same as my previous review and the same comment still applies 'You can't polish a turd.'

These apartments really divide people and it's easy to see why and is 'pot luck' as to if you have a stay without a glitch or problems from day one and throughout. This time we returned with more family (12 in total) as the location is great and in general the apartments are just about adequate for a 2 week stay.

While the place has remained in the 1970's there are I think around 12 apartments that have had a major refurb, but you pay extra for these and again quite a few problems have been reported with a lack of hot water, air con problems and some electricity outages, though from the photo's they look very nice. They are planning to have them all refurbished by the summer season 2014 and the beds in our apartment and non refurbed rooms are so uncomfortable.

However the problem is the place has been run on a shoe string for so long and refurbing the apartments is only part of the problem. All the sunbeds need replacing, the stair wells and general areas need a deep clean to brighten things up and remove some ground in stains. There's a large crack in a big pane of glass next to reception, which was there last year and is still there, dangerous and unsightly. They need to remove the old worn sofas from the reception and lounge area and totally overhall the very out of date and naff 'entertainment program.'

During the week our extended family stayed here their air con failed and was out of order for the best part of 4 days/nights, though they did get given a couple of fans each and after some nagging got free drinks all day on their last day. We also heard of other guests having real nightmare's with their Air Con (Flooded rooms/wardrobes) and being as it was in the high 30's most days and rarely dropped below 28/29 degrees at night, you had to feel for them. My other real gripe is the shabby, closed down on-site supermarket that's been boarded up for at least 2 to 3 years and needs tearing down or better still having a total refurb and re-opening! It's such an eye sore!

The 2 pool tables, table tennis table and the pool keep the kids happy and there is free Wifi in and around the reception area and just about reaches outside to the bar. The bar is fine and the staff are welcoming and happy. Food (Snacks) are okay and the drinks are cold, if a little pricey. However this year in our second week trying to stay around the pool just got to much, not so much the kids enjoying themselves that's fine, but mixing this with loud music, broken and uncomfy beds and everyone fighting for space around the pool (The towel brigade go out from 6.00am to reserve prime spots!!) so we just used the apartment as somewhere to put our heads each night and spent the days at the beach, out and about and ate out every night.

The pool itself and the bar area are okay and the cleaners and staff work hard to make the most of what they have to work with, but it's a bit like painting the Golden Gate Bridge, as it's been neglected far to long, by the time they have addressed everything that needs doing, it'll be time to start again unless the owners (Mar Hotels) get their fingers out and do what should been done many years ago.

If you want location then the Oro Playa is hard to beat, but if you're looking for a quiet getaway in comfy surroundings then best avoid.
